This carries some good chocolate tones with this and what seems like clear barrel aging. The detractor is the boozy tones; and they're quite evident here. I was wondering what year's release this was, but it's gotta be the 2011 since it's so hot. Clearly shows how age can mellow beers into being excellent brews.

2011 vintage so almost 6 months old.

A: A pitch black pour with a nice dense medium brown head. Fades very slowly, leaving an almost solid wall of lacing behind.

S: Hearty roasted malt with some dark chocolate and coffee beans. A bit oaky with some anise and molasses. Creamy.

T: Up front there is oaky vanilla, toffee and molasses along with a boat load of roasted malt. Bitter char with some creamy chocolate and coffee mixed with quite a bit of anise, especially as it warms up. Tons of lingering bitter coffee, chocolate, anise and a little smoke in the aftertaste. Flavors are sharp and just a touch boozy.

M: Heavy. Fairly thick but not syrupy.

O: Deceptively big imperial stout. I've had weaker beers that feel like they're twice as strong. Flavors are complex, varied and well balanced. Flavors stand out and are quite sharp as previously noted. Overall a great stout, up there with some of the best. With some more age and some mellowing it could become incredible. The label DOES state, best AFTER 8/12.

Vintage 2008.

Appearance is dark and viscous. Let out a decent "psht" upon opening.

Smell is mostly wood with some vanilla and a distant hint of cold coffee.

Taste...I now know what balance everyone raves about. A tinge of alcohol followed by heavy chocolate and coffee that just laaays across the palate. Finish is sweet but also drys a bit with faint hops.

Mouthfeel, well, its excellent. The flavors come on slow but relentless, and stick around for quite some time.

Overall a benchmark IRS.

2010 vintage 22oz bottle poured into a wide mouth wine glass at a bar. The bottle specifically says best after 11/15/11.

The beer is black as night with very little brown head that immediately disappeared without any traces. I smell lots of fruits along with the roasted malts. It is sweet and fruity with roasted malts and licorice. The beer is think and viscous with almost no carbonation. The alcohol is very well hidden. This is a great beer and all of the complex flavors have meshed with time producing a fantastic beer. I love that they put a best after date on the bottle. I would like to try a fresh bottle just to see how it changes over time but I can’t imagine that it is better fresh than it is now.

From notes:

Poured into a KTG Snifter.

Appeared a dark brown, nearly black color with a small, brown head.

Smelled of roasted coffee and chocolate.

Taste is very rich - dark chocolate, a bit of woodiness.

Mouthfeel is thick and sweet.

Overall a delicious RIS.

Poured from 22oz bomber to airplane and rainbow themed tippy cup:

Deep and dark, ominous black body. Dense brown froth that swells to the rim. Great lacing, even in the plastic children's cup.

The nose is one of the best - cocoa, nutmeg, smoke, oak, faint licorice, molasses, vanilla, a lot going on here.

The taste is just as satisfying - big oak, warming booze, smoke, the finish is still a little hot.

I'd like to take a more in-depth look at The Abyss in the future but, as always, delicious.
