Served on tap into a footed ale glass at the Bier Stein. 2010 vintage aged in Pinot Noir barrels

A- Poured a dark brown (almost purple color) with a small dark off-white frothy head that left a little bit of spotty lace

S- Big aroma of red wine, raspberry, toffee, chocolate, and some yeasty notes. Lots of sweetness, light roasty notes, and some nice tartness in the aroma

T- Dominant red wine and raspberry flavors, pronounced toffee notes, cherry, some light roasted notes, some alcohol taste. Finishes with a nice medium level tartness

M- Effervescent, high carbonation, very dry, smooth, nice warming sensation, and very drinkable

O- Great beer with huge pinot noir and fruit character, balanced with a nice roastiness. Extremely drinkable, nice level of tartness, and a very well-crafted beer.

2006 vintage. A bottle left over from the 2007 GABF judging and given to me as a reward for my volunteer efforts. I pulled this out of my cellar as a nice nightcap on this cold 2011 winter evening. So glad my semester is over and I can relax for a couple weeks.

Pours a half finger of tan head over a brilliant ruby brown liquid. Gorgeous. Smells rich malt with esters and strong piney hops. Oranges, leather, bourbon vanilla, cherry cough syrup (in a pleasant form, not icky), figs, clean alcohol, animal cookie, chocolate-chip cookie dough, and warm clean laundry lint.

Tastes wonderful. Holiday beer meets blackberry, american hops, and gorgeous oaking. Fairly light in the mouth and drying in the finish. Malt flavor is cookie dough, biscuit, nutty, and mild chocolate. A malty sweet start loses to hop flavor, alcohol sting, and a mild acidic bite. Berry esters momentarily stave off many types of edge (alcohol, oak, etc). NORTHERN BREWER HOPS!!! Hop flavors are blackberry and pine with minimal resiny character. The hops mix with vanillins, a gentle ginger, and nutmeg. Alcohol is a clean sting with an intensity that balances with the intensity of the flavors. The sting also helps to lighten the beer off the tongue. Despite how light the liquid is in the mouth, there is a dextrinous silky thickness that is really nice.

The oak is raw woody and blended into the other flavors extremely well. It would come across as abrupt and abrasive except that it plays so well with the other kids. Wonderful bourbon and vanilla character.

My guess is that I consumed this beer near the peak of its aging. My impression is that the alcohol is a bit more tamed than in other reviews and some evidence of positive oxidation aging characters are present. A bit more time might reveal some additional soured-caramel (other describe it as sherry-like) oxidation that increases the complexity of this beer. Tough to say, as I waxed the cap on my bottle at some point in the past (maybe 3 years ago). Stunning beer. Has a flavor for everyone and the flavors blend well together.

On tap at Deschutes Public House PDX 12.1.11.

About a quarter finger of light brown head over medium dark brown body, no visible carbonation. Pretty interesting nose, chocolate, some toffee, umami (!), good resiny hop aromas. Taste mirrors nose, a pretty complex offering, some stone fruit, plums, decent bitterness considering this was brewed over a year ago. Mouthfeel medium good effervescence though the ABV is quite prominent inhibiting drinkability. Need to let this warm up fully to appreciate, especially the interesting aromas. A contemplative beer to be taken seriously at this ABV. Hoping the bottles I've stashed mellow out hop wise over the next decade or so :-).
