Pours a ruddy brown, clear, with a good amount of billowy white head that dissipates almost instantly. A good sign of the high ABV. I can swirl up a millimeter or so of head, but it settles to a small ring quickly. Definite cherry and some oak aroma, as advertised, with a strong sour vinegar, which I'm guessing is what's hiding the high ABV. Digging a little deeper, we get leather, strawberries, some raspberry, and a little milk chocolate. Oak dominates the palate with some dark chocolate and slight vanilla. Sourness comes through, but its pretty slight. I also get all the fruit mentioned earlier in the nose. There is also a bitterness that mixes with the sourness that suggests turned fruit. Kinda weird in the finish, but as it warms this strangeness fades away. The feel is somewhat thin and prickly with carbonation, despite the appearance, finish is dry.

This is definitely a nice treat, and at 11% it should be treated as such. It's not as sour as the aroma would suggest, which makes me want to age the second bottle for a couple years.

Appearance: Poured a medium brown color, almost looked liked bourbon. Very little head that dissipated very quickly.

Aroma: A full aroma that contained hints of bourbon, dark fruits, and red wine.

Taste: Sour but not overwhelmingly so. Very strong but balanced flavors of cherries, acid, and wine. Flavors are layered and each taste offers a different amount of each flavor.

Mouthfeel: A medium-bodied beer that tastes lighter due to the light carbonation.

Overall: Very good sour beer. Not lip-puckering sour but very drinkable. The aroma gives off a bourbon hint but the beer was not aged in bourbon barrels and each taste is a little surprise with the different flavors in the beer.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Vintage 2012. Best after 20 August 2013.

A: No head. Hazy auburn.

S: Flatly tart in a very Oud Bruin sort of way. Top notes of lemon zest. Deeper red-fruitier scents as well.

T: Mmm. Interesting. This is basically a barleywine with a hint of lambic tartness. As it warms up, I realise I'm completely wrong and the truth is the opposite. This is an honest Oud Bruin, true to the style,

M: Tart then sweet...sweet then tart...tart then sweet...This beer is a pendulum.

O: This is an incredible beer. Highly recommended. Want to have again.
