Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue X:

Sour beer is the future--or at least that is what the brewers and beer geeks have been telling us over the past year or so. Deschutes has thrown their hat in the ring.

Pours out a semi-thin, latte-like froth and dissipates to a thin lacing with some good retention. Clear, tarnished-brass red color, certainly lighter in color compared to other Oud Bruins. Massive and extremely expressive aroma of peppercorn, evergreen sap, anise, lemon peel, tart cherries, vanilla beans and fresh peaches. Very smooth with a fluffy creaminess on the palate. A healthy smack of tartness on the palate ends up being very rounded rather than being a flash in the pan as it feigns tart cherry and lemon zest flavors from start almost to finish. Spice flavors are light but still a little chaotic with minty, peppery and medicinal notes from the yeast and alcohol. Speaking of alcohol, the 9 percent is very deceiving, with only a warmth in the chest as the tartness seems to numb the palate and throat for the first several sips. Small, dry kernel of maltiness in the drying, faded spicy finish.

An epic beer for the sour beer lover, between the level of sourness and light yeast funk, this beer has found a perfect balance. Way too drinkable for its size: Sip and savor with care. A bottle full of beer geek joy.

poured 22oz bottle into teku. Drink after 8/2013

A - It pours a dirty ruby with an off white 2.5 finger head that fizzes. Fades quickly into a collar and leaves behind a few traces of lace.

S - Faint cherries, dark tart fruit, and red wine. Some oak and brown sugar round it out.

T - Red wine and oak seem to be the most prevalent with some medicinal cherry flavor. Not very sour and only somewhat tart. Dark fruits and brown sugar fill in on the finish. There is a booziness to this beer.

M - Carbonated and light bodied, very dry.

O - This was good, but I didn't like as much as most. A bit too much red wine and the cherry flavor was medicinal for me. Good, but not exceptional.

22 oz bottle from 2012 bottling. Says best after 8/2013. Aged since 11/2012. Poured into Belgian ale glass directly from aging refrigerator so served around 52 degrees.

A) Reddish to cordovan, moderate carbonation bubbles. 2/3 finger head when poured, not very much retention, thin ring left.

S) Sour cherries, mustiness from yeast, maybe some citus or lemongrass

T) Very smooth and very complex. Cherries and citrus, not too much funk at all, not very sour at beginning. Finish is sweeter. Really well done.

M) Medium to full bodied, not as much carbonation as indicated by looking at it, really no evidence of the 11.4% alcohol content. This is really well-done.

Russian River Supplication has been surpassed. This is masterful. Will have to grab more than one bottle the next time they release.

2010 vintage. Batch 2. Best after 11/01/11. Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Deschutes snifter glass. Acquired in a trade from nedvalton, thank you sir!

A- Pours a hazy, muddy brownish- maroon body with a two finger white head that reduces slowly to a white ring of foam.

S- Smells of funky brett, tart lactic acid, sharp sour lemons, grass, caramel/toffee, dark cherries, white wine, grapes. So complex, aromatic, and inviting. I can't wait to sip this.

T- Wow.. this is amazing. The first thing you notice is the tart cherries/citrus notes. I wouldn't call this acidic.. I'd call it on the higher end of tart. The tartness combines with some funkyness coupled with a slight astringent hoppiness. The finish is sweet with some very nice vanilla, caramel, toffee, burnt toast, charred bready notes. Very complex.

M- Medium body, good drinkability, medium carbonation.

I've really been looking forward to trying this beer and it didn't disappoint! Super complex and balanced. Very well done, Deschutes. 4 years has done wonders.
