From a 650 ml waxed bottle (best after August 20, 2013) into a wine glass. 2012 vintage.

A-The brew is murky brownish-cherry in color. There is a short-lived soda-pop-like head of khaki foam. The visible, active carbonation keeps a patchy cap hanging around for a while. Pretty standard look for the style with a better than average reddish hue.

S-There is a lot going on here. Up front, there is sour cherry and green apple tartness paired with a big dose of funky oak that gives suggestions of vanilla. The oak also provides a nice bit of drying tannic-like smells. I also smell prune from the malts, but the prune isn't terribly sweet, and this beer is fairly dry and lacking in sugar sweetness for the style. The alcohol is spicy and warming.

T-The taste follows the smell mostly. I don't get much sour, only a light tartness with sour cherry being most noticeable. The prune and raisin component are stronger than expected, but the malty dark fruits pair well with the oaky vanilla and mild, earthy funk. The alcohol is spicy and warming, but well-integrated.

M-The feel on this year-old bottle is very soft for the style with smooth, ultra-fine carbonation. Heft is medium to full.

O-A nice effort. This brew is quite drinkable for 11.4% ABV. I originally was hoping for more tart flavors, but after about two sips, I started to really enjoy the less sweet (for the style) malt-forward character. It is complex and balanced and the taste really grew on me. I'm not sure what food this would pair with, but it drank well on its own after dinner. This is a great (and powerful) take on the style.

Appearance: Poured a medium brown color, almost looked liked bourbon. Very little head that dissipated very quickly.

Aroma: A full aroma that contained hints of bourbon, dark fruits, and red wine.

Taste: Sour but not overwhelmingly so. Very strong but balanced flavors of cherries, acid, and wine. Flavors are layered and each taste offers a different amount of each flavor.

Mouthfeel: A medium-bodied beer that tastes lighter due to the light carbonation.

Overall: Very good sour beer. Not lip-puckering sour but very drinkable. The aroma gives off a bourbon hint but the beer was not aged in bourbon barrels and each taste is a little surprise with the different flavors in the beer.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Vintage 2012. Best after 20 August 2013.

A: No head. Hazy auburn.

S: Flatly tart in a very Oud Bruin sort of way. Top notes of lemon zest. Deeper red-fruitier scents as well.

T: Mmm. Interesting. This is basically a barleywine with a hint of lambic tartness. As it warms up, I realise I'm completely wrong and the truth is the opposite. This is an honest Oud Bruin, true to the style,

M: Tart then sweet...sweet then tart...tart then sweet...This beer is a pendulum.

O: This is an incredible beer. Highly recommended. Want to have again.

2012 vintage. Tasted 30 May 2014.

Pours a murky medium brown. Just a little head, gone fast, not much lacing - but that's typical of a sour.

Smell is tart, with vinegar, dark fruit, and red wine. A delightful combination, quite sour, but the aroma is full and potent.

Taste is a complex blend of acidic sour, red wine vinegar, and cherries. So many shades of sour, teasing me with different delights each time I taste it. Again, it's full-flavored, and quite multidimensional. I love the depth and variety it brings.

Feel is top-notch. It's medium-bodied, heavier than many similar beers, but with prickly carbonation that lightens it and makes the flavors dance. That combo of heavy and light is fantastic.

The more I drink this, the more I like it. The level of complexity in the flavor is impressive, and the feel is a perfect complement. An excellent, robust sour.
