22 oz. bomber poured into a Dogfish Head signature glass (May 30, 2010). The label is stamped "Best By 06/24/2010."

I picked this up on a trip to Denver, it's my first sampling of the famed Deschutes Brewery.

Eyes: Pours a darkish orange with significant haze. The ridiculously thick, fluffy tan head fills the glass and forces a measured pour to avoid overflow. The lacing is ridiculous.

Nose: A solid pop of hops as expected from a solid DIPA, but not as potent as I expected. A good mix of citrus and grassy notes.

Tongue: This is easily the bitterest beer I've ever had that carries the most flavor with it. I've had less bitter offerings that are much harsher on the tongue, but Hop Henge delivers with a rich flavor profile to tame the high IBU count. Aggressive mango, grapefruit, and citrus flavors combine with a healthy malt character. Delicious!

Mouth: Lots of malt and the ample carbonation provide a good mouthfeel.

Libation: What an impressive beer! Aggressively flavorful, bitter, and the best balanced DIPA I can remember. A great offering from Deschutes.

from the freshness dated bomber "best by 07/14"
Into a Sam Smiths perfect pint glass results in a slightly hazy golden body capped by a 1" head that has longevity and leaves delicate lacing and rings of foam as the level drops, nice!
Aroma is not subdued or powerful, kind of in the middle, I get weed, fresh cut grass, grapefruit rind, pine sap, very appealing.
Taste starts with some tropical fruit but quickly morphs into typical hop bitterness, there is a fine cracker bread sweetness that attempts a show, but it ends with bitter hops and a hint of blood orange.
Carbonation is subdued, slightly creamy
Overall this is another stellar brew by a brewery that does it right. Bravo!

A - Pours a hazy amber with a two-finger foamy white head. Light sticky lacing.

S - Light amount of tropical fruits - mango & pineapple.

T - Starts out with tropical fruits and a nice caramel malt sweetness. The finish has an earthy lingering hop bitterness. There is also a light pepper bite in the finish.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth drinking with a crisp bite.

O - Tasty DIPA. Glad I was able to try this. Recommended.

A bright, flaring sort of medium orange shows consistently the same flair and shade through its entire body. The pale yellow-gray head it develops is extremely frothy, a full finger's height with some density to it. The big-bubbled but creamy and tight remainder sticks around the rest of the way and drops down some nice, thick and sticky patches pretty plentiously.
The smell, while not conveying all of the beauty the flavor offers, does deliver most of it. The hops bouquet is a beauty with some pine and citrus forefront, a light touch of dankness and earth, flora and a hint of perfume. A ghost of mint on the finish mingles with the rest, while some tropical fruits, a hint of a honey note and caramel add balance from the malts.
Masterful balance is shown on the tongue; the sweetness the malts provide from caramel, toffee, honey and fruits is just enough to really keep the bitterness strong but not overpowering or astringent. The hops provide a wonderful variety in excellent melody, nothing clashing. All the herb, dank (almost mossy?) earth, pine and citrus pith and zest make for new discoveries on the tongue almost sip by sip. There's a hint of cheddar and maybe uncured, fresh tobacco leaf in the middle, while it finishes with the pine and herb while malts continue to balance.
The feel is nearly perfect for an IPA of any kind. Alcohol, which for its strength was virtually undetectable in the aroma and flavor, takes nothing away from the feel and makes for dangerous drinkability. One honestly could drink more than a bomber thinking nothing of it before getting hit with it. It's frothy and unbelievably creamy on the palate. A little dryness kicks in to give the balance many don't consider when thinking about mouthfeel, and a bright sort of crispness stays with it while letting the creaminess rule.
