650ml bottle – 10.60 ABV – Best before 04-06-2013 bottle date
Poured into a Boulevard tulip at 45 Degrees.
Appearance: A golden color body with a 2 finger off white head on top. Lots of foam sticking to the sides of the glass and plenty of alcohol legs. The head sticks around awhile and an effervescence of carbonation somewhat steams up from the bottom.
Aroma: Getting a strong presence of tropical fruit, lots of hop bitterness, assorted stone fruits, wheat, sweet malts, bready yeast and a touch of alcohol. So far a pretty great aroma!
Taste: The pungent sweet tropical fruits like pineapple, grapefruit, orange, lemon and peach are directly upfront. The hops also lead the way and are right up front with the fruits. Lots of complex, floral and resinous hop characteristics from the wide variety of hops present here. Sweet bready and toasty malts, caramel and brown sugar notes hold this together from the back end. There is also some wheat beer and Belgian tripel ale qualities that make this a lot more interesting. The alcohol is somewhat present here but expected due to the high ABV. I really like how this is fairly complex and very well-balanced between all the flavors.
Mouth feel: Thick, full bodied and an overall great sipper. The carbonation level is moderate here and really sticks around to the end.
Overall: Great DIPA! Pungent tropical fruits, dominating and complex hop bitterness, sweet bready malts and the wheat/Belgian tripel notes make this a really interesting and enjoyable take of an Imperial IPA. This one is a stand out to me and I’m definitely going out to get another bottle!
