A - Pours a dark rusty brown with ruby highlights. Two-finger off-tan head is thick and tight, and fades moderately fast. Thick collar and a wide pancake of a cap left over. Pretty.
S - Dark fruits, caramel, and wood. Fig and cherry, along with caramel and toffee sweetness predominate. Oak notes abound as well. Some leathery earth. Hops are of the piny, grassy variety, and play a supporting role. Some slight port and whiskey aromas in there, but its a subtle addition as well. Overall, it's not as pungent as I expected; you really have to work to get the subtleties in the aroma.
T - Dark fruits, caramel, toffee, and earth all play together pretty equally to start. Interesting, considering that the nose was much more fruit-dominant. The oak plays a much larger role on the palate as well, giving a distinct woody overtone, with nutty, vanilla notes. This would be a great beer to show someone what oak in a beer tastes like. More earthy flavors and hop presence as the beer warms. Just enough bitterness in the back to prevent it from becoming overly sweet. Port flavors make themselves known occasionally. A bit hot on the finish. There's a lot going on in this glass; this is one of those beers that brings something new with each sip.
M - Full, slick and rich. Tight, fine carbonation. The finish is incredibly long.
D - Very high, for a fresh barleywine. Deep and complex, but not too overwhelming to simply enjoy.
As has become expected in Deschutes' Reserve Series, this is a big, complex, delicious monster of a beer. With a "best after" date of 2010, I can only imagine the wonderful things that will happen to this beer with some time in my cellar. Highly recommended!
