2009 bottle, poured in a big wine glass at 57 F/ 14 C.

Attractive red-amber color, small bubbly yellow-beige head that reduces to basically nothing, fine splattery patches of lace.

Aroma of sweet, fruity, solventy esters and/or fusel alcohol, not overboard; some caramel malt, with some toastiness; butter; wood; and the suggestion of tart stone fruits, caught up with fairly mild citrus, pine, and floral hops.

Flavors of sweet red apple, peach, solvent, caramel, fairly sweet. Then after several seconds, toast and wood come in and it gets drier and moderately bitter, with the fruitiness hanging in there and turning into something like peach pit, and the sweetness hanging in there too for a long, bittersweet, fruity, boozy, woody peach pitty finish. Some elements seem disjointed, but it's quite tasty despite that.

Fine bubbles and a good dose of residual sugar make for an enjoyable texture, perhaps lighter than I expect when a label says 'barleywine,' but by no means light. Good drinkability, since I don't mind solventy alcoholic woodjuice when it doesn't cross the line, and this doesn't quite.

I don't know what I was expecting, but this isn't it. Anyway, I'm a sucker for any kind of peach and apricot flavors, the peachiness in this meshes very well with the oak, I'm enjoying it, and I look forward to trying it aged.

Poured from a wax topped bottle. 2014 version.

A- Dark brown with a cocoa colored head. Poured into a tulip glass with a nice 3 finger head

S-Please bring us some figgy pudding and bring it right here. Huge fig smell, and a hint of caramel

T-Huge caramel upfront, followed by a crush of figs, and then closes with a merlot taste. You can taste the wine barrel in the close.

M-Sticky like a caramel party in my mouth, nice and thick.

O- Not my thing, but this is how this beer should taste. I feel like I just ate a fig newton followed by a Snickers bar. Fantastic.

This was a very good Barley wine. I purchased two bottles of this, one to try now and one to age after the best after date of 2/25/15. It will be hard to keep this bottle to find out how well it ages. It is a very smooth sipping beer with just a touch of the wine barrel notes in the after taste.
