Super excited to have gotten to this before it slipped away.
Pours an abyss-like black with a slim, mocha colored head.
The smell is closing in on heavenly, though I don't much care for the orange.
Yeah, the orange tinge is not cutting it for me. What the hell Deschutes?! You ruined a brilliant porter by making a cheap, xmas-like dark chocolate orange. The coffee flavor is brilliant, as is maybe just a tinge of vanilla. The roasted chocolate malt is glorious as well, but I just don't like this beer.
Thick and malty, gotta love how it feels. However, on the overall grade of this beer, I'm torn: Considering the 11%ABV, it's EXTRAORDINARILY drinkable. The orange flavor however, is unnecessary, and honestly not that good.
I'll say I'm a little disappointed, though it's better than Black Butte orig.
Here's to hoping XXII is citrus-free.

A: Pours black with a one finger creamy tan head. Sheets of lace with each sip.
S: Big and roasty with tons of dark chocolate, powdery cocoa and some faint barrel. Barrel notes emerge more as it warms.
T: Tons of velvety dark chocolate, dark berry notes and dark roasted malt. Some syrupy espresso as well. Finishes with a bare touch of char. Smooth as hell. Really well done.
