On-tap at Beachwood BBQ, on to the beer:

It's amazing what the world of yeast can do. Take the brewery's organic pale ale, use a few strains of wild yeast, and you have a sour beer. The beer is tart, full of vinegar like acidity, and finishes with some apples and assorted mixed fruits in the finish. Pleasant all around.

A-Deep ruby red one finger off white head with some carbonation and some lacing.

S-Lots of wine, grapes and oak. Some funk.

T-Lots of wine, oak, some grapes, mild funk not much else though.

M-Medium in body, and a very dry finish.

O-Very wine like. It got a lot of charactersistics rom the barrels. But at the end of the day nothing else as far as flavors really come through.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown. Reddish body. Thin collar.

Smell - Acetic. Green apples. Kinda vegetal. Caramel.

Taste - Sharp sourness. Very acetic. Caramel. Sour apples.

Mouthfeel - It's not super sour, but it's an intense flavor.

Overall -Too acetic for my tastes.

Deschutes' Green Monster. 7.3%. Aged 3 years in wine barrels.

Okay, I gotta say: The wax top makes for a good presentation, but it's a bitch to get off!

Appearance: Very small amount of head. Light, fine-bubbled lacing. Deep red-amber color.

Smell: Hmm. Very different than I was expecting. The first smell I get is a sort of pickle/olive brine, like what I would smell from my mom's potato salad. That's a first! Not getting any other scents, yet.

Taste/Moutfeel: Okay, I'm getting more of the olive brine on the palate, with some apple seed. Moderate acidity. Maybe some sour grape.

I gotta say, based on the reference I got from my coworker, this falls very short. Not my ideal for a sour at all. It is interesting, and unique, but not my thing. It's a shame, I was told this has a big green apple flavor, but I'm not getting any.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, into a Petrus chalice.

Pours out a slightly hazed amber/orange with a half inch of off white head. No lace.

Sour apple, bandaid, caramel and dark fruit battle up front. Oak smoothes it out a little.

The taste follows the smell. Not bad, but a little all over the place. Goes down smooth with a little pucker.

I'm aging one for sure. But I'm not sure this will end well. It isn't a bad sour, but there are a few, slightly off putting elements to it that will either disappear with age, or heavily assert themselves. I love Deschutes, so my fingers are crossed, and I will re review.

Thanks to Rado for sharing this one at AndrewK's tasting.

Best after 9/1/14.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is quite jarring with sour, nail polish remover, acidic, vinegar, and slight green apple aromas. Taste is much the same with malt, vinegar, and acidic flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average sour taste-wise but the aromas are pretty poor and not pleasant to smell.

A - pours a deep deep amber, with half a finger of light tan head, OK retention good lacing.

S - super sour, mild heat, some horseradish and dark fruits/cherries and a bit of skunkyness

T - lots of sour funk, more funk, cherry. Tiny bit of heat.

M - medium bodied at most, great carbonation. Fantastic

Mass props to the couple next to Raul (that is breaking up) for giving him a taste of their Green Monster. Thang is freaky; thang is freaky like Adel right out of the shower. Good levels of, well, everything. Not the best sour, but Raul can still feel it like Raul could.

Best after Sept 9, 2014 on the label. The prices at the 3 stores in Casper that carry/carried it had a wide range from +$15 to +$17.

The Green Monster is red, a ruby red, and not green at all as you find in "coloured" brews around that, supposedly, Irish holiday. The foam is white and small but long lasting with some nice lacing.

Can you say...tart cherries and vinegar? That's what I get when I take multiple whiffs. My first bottle I tried, I could swear I got sour apples but not this time.

Sour cherries and vinegar in the taste as well with a hint of a spice of some sort..maybe cinnamon? Maybe I'm imagining that but I thought I'd mention it. It does have a good level of sourness and isn't huge with the abv.

Good mouthfeel, drinkability is good. Though not up to the level of other enjoyable sour brews I've had the chance to try, I find it definitely worthy of checking out. I wonder what it will taste like *after* the best after date? I guess I'll save a bottle and find out.

Bottle opened on 9.24.13

A - Pours a cloudy medium to dark brown with a tan fluffy head that fades slowly.

S - Tart fruit, apple, leather, and earthy.

T - Smooth pinot grapes and oak with a tart fruity - green apple finish.

D - Decent carbonation and a medium body. Silky smooth amazing mouth feel.

O - Tart green apple with lots of pinot and barrel. I enjoyed this one and am excited to see how it ages.

I've let this warm up for a half hour after the first eye-watering sip. Whatever interesting flavors may emerge out of this stew in the long run, I say it's infected. Smells intensely of acetic acid. Clear amberish brown with not much head and little in the way of carbonation.

This is the most intensely sweet and sour beer I've ever tasted. I don't taste much of any backbone of flavor. It's just sugar and vinegar. I can't see what's going to happen in a couple more year to improve it. The bacteria will eventually eat up the rest of the sugar and leave that raspy bitterness not born of hops. It will be even more vinegary with the sugar by products. It's already getting nastily bitter at the finish.

I"ll be interested to see if I'm wrong in a couple of years. A distinct woody flavor finally emerges, which is the one saving flavor. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Bottlecraft in San Diego.

Big pop comes with cap is freed from the bottle. Brew is dark amber in color with lots of reds and purple. Clarity is looking pretty strong too. Fluffy foamy creamy tan head. Lacing is chunky and inconsistent.

Big raisin, vanilla, green apple, cider vinegar aroma.

Whoa. Tons of deep vinegar flavors. Carbonation sits kinda flat for what the cap sounded like. Sweetness is smooth and bitter. Dry, earthy, crisp, green apple, horsey, sour. Kinda harsh, barrel notes need to fade a bit for the drinkability to pick up. Only slight harshness.

This is a perfect example of a brew that will greatly benefit from a few years in the cellar. I can't wait to see where thing brew goes in a year or two. For still being so green, it's a great beer, that can only improve with more time. Not sure how I feel about the whole "it was an infected beer, turned experimental" and then sold for $2 more than Abyss... Recommended - with a grain of salt.

A: Pours a deep and murky brown color with a 1/2 finger sandy head. Leaves some light tracks of lace down the glass with each sip.

S: Definitely Flanders Brown-like. A rich sour cherry aroma with some pinot noir, raisin, leather and some light oak. Smells pretty great.

T: Very wine-like with a good lingering sourness. Pinot noit, sour black cherry, underripe red apple, leather and a creamy vanilla flavor. Light tannins and leather on the finish. Tons of rich, ripe fruit flavors while also giving a good kick of sourness. A really solid beer.

22 ounce bottle decanted into an oversized snifter. 7.3% ABV.
Appearance: Deep chestnut with a slight chill haze. Zero head (3.75/5).
Aroma: Sour cherries, grape Kool-Aid dust, very sharp red wine, and a faint whiff of oak (4.5/5).
Taste: Rich red wine, sweet malt, intense sour, toasted oak, tobacco, and leather. Definitely opens up as it approaches room temperture (4.5/5).
Mouthfeel: Medium body, light carbonation. Velvety smooth and with a sour pucker in the finish (4.5/5).
Overall: With the limited release this beer saw, I assumed that I would probably never see a bottle of it. Imagine my surprise when I ran across a bomber today. There is no subtlty in here. The flavors are big, bold, and concentrated. It’s fun to drink and should be interesting to see what it turns into after a few years in the cellar. Glad I grabbed a second bottle (4.25/5).

Poured out of a brown 22 oz bomber with a thick layer of hunter green wax enclosing the cap and upper neck of the bottle. I actually had to get quite medieval with it to access the cap. Obnoxiously, the label says "BEST AFTER: 9/1/14". Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack Series tulip glass.

Appearance - Seems to look opaque and dark chestnut brown upon first glance. However, after holding it up to the light, there is a deep garnet to burgundy quality to it. Head sudsy and about a finger thick, the color of toasted marshmallow. Retention is pretty low, with it dissipating to a rim of bunched up foam on the edges of the glass, along with a sparse mottling of film along the top of the liquid.

Smell - Notes of sour cherries, apple cider vinegar, sherry as well as some notes of wet leaves, tree bark and fresh leather in the background. There also might be a bit of medicinal quality to it, but it's hard to tell. An underlying oaky base with a sour twang is a constant accompanying the other characteristics. There is a molasses element that becomes more noticeable as the beverage warms. So far off to a promising start--the smell is a bit weird, but it's also got an addictive complexity to it that makes me want to keep smelling it.

Taste - Sour and malty, and not seemingly very balanced. It's got a lot of the same elements I've found and liked in other wild ales, but this one is just offputting. There's also a sweetness that somehow separates itself from the sourness, making it seem like it's fighting itself. It tastes a bit artificial and metallic in a way. Just not digging it. The aftertaste is a blend of sweetness and lemon juice sourness. UPDATE: as the beer warms, the taste becomes much more well-blended and less conflicted. Highly recommend letting this one get closer to 50 °F

Mouthfeel - A bit viscous and cloying, with a medium body. The carbonation is high and provides for a effervescence that is unfortunately very necessary to offset the syrupy feel and rather unappealing taste.

Overall, a beer that I'm glad I only bought one of. I can appreciate the spirit behind this beer--take something that didn't go quite according to plan and turn it into something completely different and better. The whole "best after" approach is especially annoying when you open the beer fresh and it's not terribly good. Oh well, perhaps I'll run across some after September of next year and see how it's "supposed" to taste.

a real oddity here, apparently some kind of mess up that spends 39 months in pinot noir barrels. this is no joke. holy wine. it looks and tastes a lot like a flanders oud bruin, brown red in color, mostly flat looking with a thin wispy tan head and a lot of acid. this is tannic as anything on the nose, could almost be a glass of wine. fruit is prominent, and lactic funk dominates. the taste is super woody, almost like decaying wine barrel, its so infused its defined the character of the beer. lots of acid, dry fruit, and pinot. not as much hops as I hoped for, but a really dramatic flavor experience just the same. the feel is tongue squeezingly acidic, burning, heart burn inducing. decent carbonation for its age, and a thinner medium body. overall this is an exercise in excess, all this time in wine barrels has turned this almost into a wine itself. I like it, but I don't need to drink it again for a long time. it was tiring.

Poured from bomber into Teku glass. The beer looks like a Flemish brown with a small tan head that lingers quite nicely. Looks fantastic.

The aroma on this is killer! Big cherry, new leather, strawberry jam, Cabernet, vanilla, and a floral note that I'm not sure where its coming from.

On the taste you get those cherries with dark grapes and apple cider vinegar as the main components. Pear, toffee, burnt sugar all adorn the background with an obvious presence of vanilla and oak from the barrels. There is an apparent sweetness to this but is actually pretty much cancelled out by the sourness. If the brett in here can go to work some more it should dry it out with age.

Mouthfeel is a light medium and the carbonation is pretty much spot on. You'd expect a heavier mouthfeel with the look and taste of this one.

Overall this is a surprise. Based on the fact Deschutes isn't really a sour producing brewery except for the Dissident, I didn't expect this to be so good. If you don't mind some residual sugars in your sours you will thoroughly enjoy this. I think age will benefit this and that is a surprise in of itself given this is already a 39 month old beer! The wine barrel usage is what made this a success in my opinion. My rating seems higher than it should be on paper but I think that is just due to the fact it looked perfect and smelled like candy! Suffered a bit more on the taste and mouthfeel but it was still fantastic in those departments. See what time does to this!

A: Poured a lighter crimson like cooloer with a dirty white cap, fizzy, head is good at first but then sordove fizzes away leaving minimal lacing bubbles and curtains

S: A nice blend of red and dark cherries back with some white wine notes. Some funkiness and wood.

T: Cherries dipped in vinegar. Initial lactic tartness with a unripe red cherry note. A little bit of white grapes in the background, some Earthiness, old wood and a nice stinging, dry, effervescent like finish with more fruits

M: Medium-full bosy, stinging from mainly the acid and tartness.

O: Very good, young despite the barrel life. If this beer can chill out in the bottle a bit this will be a gem in several years. Despite some of its "young" like properties it was definitely a good wild/sour....for me anyways

A: Pours maroon, with a light white head, fair head retention.

S: Cherries, heavy acid, noticable bug character.

T: Sour cherries, the malt is evident with a hint of caramel, but the bugs and acid take over. A real "raw" tasting beer.

M: This thing is extremely acidic, it feels okay and mellow and at the very back end, major acid like pH 2 or less seems to come back. I thought it was kind of fun, but makes the beer annoy at times, not for everyone.

D: An intriguing wild ale, I don't think I've had a sour from Deschutes before, it was nice to see them come out with one, glad to try it.
