Had the tap version of this (super jubel) a few times at great ak b and bw fest. Time to test out the bottled version that just arrived on anchorage shelves.
Pours a hugely dark ruby red color, but totally clear. Nice off white head rests well for the style and leaves pretty decent lacing.
Nose is HUGE deep dark fruits. Booze soaked carameled fruit and large vanilla and oak notes. A touch of fig and black cherry (wine?) and slight hairspray like booze.
Pretty durn nice. Big for sure with monster dark fruit flavors. Giant Vanilla and caramel presence. More dark fruits. Fig. Slight hop presence, but clearly not the focus here. The finish is more bitter than i expected and could use some mellowing out to suit the beer better. Aftertaste is fairly boozy, suprisingly dry, and reeks of dark fruit and vanilla, some oak as well.
Mouthfeel is pretty much exactly what you want for this style. Med-high viscosity. Carbonation is flawless for the style. Nice and sticky, great marks here.
Drinkability is what you would expect for a relatively fresh 10% beer. Not amazing right now, one bomber is surely enough, but you should expect that. Over time i think this could really smooth out well.
Overall, a very nice beer. Some english barleywine like characteristics, but definitely not falling into that category. Giant dark fruit and sugary flavors that blend very well. Not sure, but i expect there was some barrel aging done on this one. This is definitely one to lay down, its great even now, but in time this could be something special. Excellent cellar potential here. Great beer.

Bottled Jan 2010, opened Nov 2013.
A - Coca cola black brown with cranberry highlights. Mixed, light khaki head. Low retention. Light lace.
S - Huge, sweet brown syrup nose with licorice, plum jam, cherry wood, tootsie roll, and a touch of smoke.
T - Molasses, brown sugar, milk chocolate, tootsie rolls, buckwheat honey, chestnuts, raisins, burnt caramel.
M - Medium-full body, appropriately light carbonation, syrupy finish.
O - Incredibly sweet, but otherwise complex. Drinks like a fortified port.
