I'm no longer surprised when Deschutes strikes a high note on a big beer. These past few years have seen them excel from brewers of reliable standbies to brewers of high clout classics. Jubel 2010 extends their winning streak with this pinot barrel aged strong ale.
2010 is a highly complex strong ale with notes of chocolate, date, licorice, brown sugar, and strong hop contours. Alcohol makes no intrusion and the beer still manages to balance out as agreeably sweet. It is ruby black and arrives with a smattering of suds. Satisfying, sustained, and sensual in every dimension.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 2010. Best after 29 January 2011.
A: Dark, impenetrable ruby. No head.
S: Sweet, boozy fruits. Spicy and dark. Loads of brown sugars. A little oxidized.
T: A bit flat, honestly. Old and mehhh. Strongly and pleasantly bitter (coffee? hops? alcohol?). It never really improves, but it is pleasant. Bright fruit and sharp alcohol.
M: Kind of flat and boring.
O: Disappointing after so many years, but not un-bad. Old ale-y.

Beautiful ruby red/amber/copper color.
Smell is funky, musty, grape, boozy, sweet, spicy and earthy
Mouthfeel is very very thin, surprisingly thin
Taste is sweet, funky, winey, metallic, slight spice or every so slight burn from alcohol.
Overall: keeping this review pretty simple and to the point: it's just okay. Not great, not horrible. If this is supposed to be aged for 10 years, I don't see it happening. In my opinion, it's on the downward slope, but maybe it's on the upswing in a few years. Overall, slightly disappointed, but certainly drinkable.
