Released February 2010. This is, according to the brewer at the Portland Pub, the same recipe as 'Super Jubel', but was aged in pinot noir barrels for 13-months before the release.

A nice little Yuletide treat for xmas. After prying off the black wax covering the cap, the beer looks almost completely black unless held up to the light, in which case it is closer to a dark rose. Half a finger of tan head rises to the top, making it look very sudsy. The nose has traces of port, brown sugar, whiskey and caramel. More of the same from the taste, plus some woody character, molasses and a medicinal aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thick and fairly chewy. The malt takes center stage here, with the hops barely showing their influence.No beating around the bush here with the alcohol, it is here in a big way, but adds to the flavor. Even with a year of age, the 10% is still pretty in your face. The barrel aging definitely influences this beer in an interesting way. Recommended.

Appearance - This poured a rich, deep burgundy brown in color with surprisingly large head for a 10%'er. The head was a light brown in color and tightly arranged.

Smell - There are some big wine and port notes in this ASO questioning the classification, but the rich alcohol aroma puts that worry to rest. There's a very complex malt base to this nose accentuated with a strong oaky character but not that fake wood smell that you get with pretenders of the style. There is a light sugar touch as well but definitely not the super-sweet profile I remember from 2000.

Taste - The wood comes on strong at the taste and again I feel the need to stress that this is an authentic, raw wood and not that cheap imitation flavor that you find so often in the big beer genre. The alcohol comes across almost like a mild whiskey and the sugar is plain table and very very mild.

Mouthfeel - This is medium-bodied with little carbonation, a poignant alcohol sting, and a slight bitter finish.

Drinkability - I don't know that this will hold up to aging like the 2000 did so I'd say to definitely drink it now. It's not as complex as the previous iteration but a wonderful beer nevertheless.

A - Pours a clear deep garnet with one finger of tan head. Fades to a thin cap and leaves some pretty good lacing.

S - Lots of dark fruits and toffee, with some caramel, roasted malt. A bit of brown sugar and anise. Very appealing aroma.

T - Similar to smell there is a big presence of dark, dried fruits, mostly raisin and fig, and toffee. Caramelized brown sugar, anise, some spice, and faint wine notes. Finish has some oaky tannins. The flavors seem well blended. I never had this fresh, so I don't know how it compares, but it is smooth and easy drinking for a strong ale at this point.

M - Medium/full mouthfeel is a bit sticky initially, but finishes dry and oaky.

O - Very nice. There is definite sweetness, but it never gets overpowering. The wine barrel aging adds a nice aspect to this. Alcohol presence is quite faint.

22 oz wax covered bottle, best after 1/29/11. Pours a dark amber brown with a smallish creamy off white head that goes to a thin film that leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is sugary malts and lots of dark fruit and cherries with some alcohol and vinous oak.

The flavor is sweet sugary molasses, with some caramel malts and a lot of dark fruits and cherry. It has a bitter alcohol finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with low carbonation.

Overall, a bit unbalanced on the sweet side followed by a little harsh bitterness. It would be interesting to try aged some to see if the sweetness and bitterness mellow and become something even better.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter. Best after January 29, 2011.

Appearance: Very dark maroon-mahogany with thin light tan head and minor lacing rings.

Smell: Major molasses - sweet and almost salty, a little soy sauce like. Toffee, caramel and cherry round out the fantastic malt aroma. Touch of English hops.

Taste: Malt onslaught of molasses, toffee, soy sauce and some nice fruity notes (plum, cherry, figs). There is a nice English hop flavor (but not bitterness) toward the finish that becomes more noticeable as I make my way through the bottle.

Feel: Very thick and full body. Quite smooth and warming. Not much carbonation, which is good for this beer.

Overall: So happy I finally got a hold of one of these bottles, as it is fantastic. I can definitely tell that this is based off of Jubelale, but it is even better (and I love Jubelale). Guess I have to wait until 2020 for them to make another batch.

A deep mahogany that barely lets any light through. A thin tan cap and little lace down the glass.

A very fruity aroma that mostly consists of dark fruits like cherries and figs along with some citrus elements. There's some other sweetness and syrupy aromas as well.

A very sweet taste that follows the nose very closely. Along with the dark fruits and syrupy flavors, there's some bready characteristics along with a very warming sensation from the alcohol and an alcohol flavor like a port or a brandy. Very nice and changing as it warms.

A creamy, syrupy, thick, dessert-like mouthfeel. It's a sipper, but the alcohol is not overpowering.

I think this beer is better than its individual parts would let on. It's a dessert sipper, and a nearly perfect one at that.

650mL wax-capped bottle with best after date of 1/29/2011. Pours dark ruby/brown with a tan head that stuck around for a bit. Smells very nice, with sweet malt, brown sugar, hops, and wood. Tastes like a big version of Jubelale! Caramel sweetness, maple syrup, dark fruits, hop bitterness, and woody flavors. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Finish is a bit boozy. Very rich and sweet. Nothing mind-blowing but this is a good, very unique Strong Ale.

Quite the story behind this brew supposedly this one came around after a drunk patron tried to steal a keg of their Jubelale, evidently the caper couldn't get away with the goods and left the keg outside to freeze. The next day the brewers came in and found the keg and sampled, basically an eisbock version of their standard seasonal and loved it with some fortification. So they brewed a bigger version and it's released every year as Super Jubel and it's only been released in bottles back in 2000 and now in 2010.

Appears a molasses mahogany like hue with deep ruby highlights when held toward the light, the head is a deep tan hue with fine evenly dispersed specks on each side check things out okay. Herbal hops and citrus zest blend in with a touch of holiday spices.

Aroma is exuberant with malt sweetness layers of syrup drizzled over dark overly ripened alcohol soaked dark fruits like plums and raisins. A definite air of charred oak with herbal/mint hop expressions in the finish. Booze is hidden pretty well but the wood used at times give a pine mint expression that must be coming from the hops.

The flavor collides with dark fruit a touch of maple syrup, a mild citrus and herbal hop bitterness, holy malt monster batman! This one also has those backing hops to provide some bitterness for balance, a touch of booze maple syrup tree bark and herbs. Very festive big brew aged on Pinot wine barrels.

Mouthfeel is big bodied a bit cloying better to share this bad boy with some friends, alot of girth with some soothing alcohol tones about it. Carbonation is smooth and mellow, quite a treat definitely a unique experience for me.

Drinkability overall, this one is to be savored with friends around the holidays I hop to have more friends around next time a bottle of this comes my way. From the smallest beer to these bruisers that Deschutes has been releasing, everything from them is so damn drinkable it may be their best attribute overall. I again can't wait to show up at the brew house or one of their brewpub locales and do some sampling with my buddy Geof, who sent me this bottle.

22 ounce poured into Delirium snifter.

Appearance is a deep brown with a reddish tint when held up to the light. Very light head that fades to a thin lacing around the edges of the glass.

Smells like brown sugar, prunes, and caramel malts. A little oakiness shines through.

Tastes like sweet dark fruits and malts.

Mouthfeel is medium and lightly carbonated.

Overall is a good beer and pretty easy to drink but not really worth sitting on for a year.

a-Pours a deep red brown in color. With a very slight amount of head.
s-Very sweet malt smell and a little weak wine smell.
t-Sweet malt takes the lead in taste with a slight sweet wine taste towards the end of the gulp. There is also a slight coffee taste that pokes through intermediately.
m/d-A little thicker than average mouth feel with a sweet coating of the mouth. A little bit of a slow drinker but pretty enjoyable.

Pours a very dark red brown with very little head. The aroma is all very sweet maltiness. The taste is straightforward and speaks of a tremendous amount of malt. There is a slight grainy taste that I think detracts from the beer a bit. Loses major points on mouthfeel because it is frankly not a very easy drinker.

Enjoyed this on tap in a brandy snifter glass at the Deschutes brew pub in Portland, Oregon

A - Pours a dark mahogany color with a red tint. Produces a very thin off white head coating which quickly dissipates to a thin lacing. Very thin looking profile to the beer.

S - Very complex aroma with roasted caramel nutty malt and a fruity presence of raisins, dates, fruitcake, cherries, sour apples. I also picked up the presence of the Pinot Noir barrel aging process in this complex aroma.

T - A complex dark fruit taste which is very smooth and carries an earthy woody profile of flavors from the Pinot Noir barrel aging. Mid-stream in the taste profile is a caramel toffee roasted malt presence which smooths out the initial sweet taste of the dark fruits. The finish is quite smooth and dry to the palette.

M - Very smooth profile with minimal carbonation for such a complex beer. There is a creaminess and smoothness to this beer which is very unique especially given the 10% abv which does not really show it self in the taste. This is quite dangerous.

D: This is an excellent interpretation of the Strong Ale category. This beer was off the charts in terms of the experience. I drank this with very little knowledge of the history and associated hype of the release as I happened to be in Portland, OR traveling and stopped in to the Deschutes brew pub. The person next to me at the bar was sipping this beer and it looked delicious. Highly recommended but be weary of the high alcohol content.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a small golden/tan head on top. Not much retention and spotty lacing.

S: Some vanilla and caramel, a little bit of brown sugar and molasses with hints of dark fruit.

T: Upfront some nice caramel and brown sugar and a little toffee. The back has more of a chocolate and dark fruit flavor, quite nice.

M: Full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Very faint heat from the alcohol, hits when the liquid is in my stomach.

O: A really nice beer. Glad I have another bottle to sit on and see what happens to it.

Pulled from my cellar just a little before the best after date of 1/29/11 because I have more, and I'm curious, I'll update this review with subsequent tastings
After removing the obnoxious waxed cap and pouring into an oversized wine glass vigorously down the middle I'm rewarded with a very deep clear ruby red brew that sports a short lived one inch head that leaves lots of sticky lacing down the sides of the glass.
Aroma of cooked brown sugar with fig newtons, a slight cotton candy.
Taste is superb, what you would expect by the smell to be cloyingly sweet has a nice bitter upfront bite where is the alcohol? No burn at all.
Very chewy, some RIS don't get to this level WOW.
Hope I can resist wiping out the rest too soon. Bravo!
Second bottle report, this is getting crazy good in the cellar, the bitterness has slightly faded and the brown sugar note has become jamaican rum without the burn, revising the overall to a five.

Best before 1/27/2011.

Served cool into a pint glass. Just enjoyed a Jubelale so it seemed like a natural progression.

Jubel has a nice dark redish brown color with good clarity and thick head. The head settles pretty quickly but leaves some nice lace behind.

The aroma is toasty, roasty and sweet. It's much like the Jubelale but bigger and stronger. I guess that's the point.

Flavor is intense and strong. Much like a barleywine style but without so much hoppiness. It's strong in the caramel, dark fruits, and figs but the hops are more subtle and earthy than I expected. Mostly sweet but there is some nice roasted malts and hops to balance it out. Cherries become the dominant flavor as time goes by. The pinot noir starts to come through more as it warms. Very nice.

Mouthfeel is medium-full in body and nice low carbonation. The balance is towards the sweet side but it's far from cloying.

Overall really enjoyable. I don't know how the age will help. To me it seems just great how it is. There isn't a huge hop presense so it's not like that will fade a great deal. The alcohol might become more subdude but it's not all that noticable as it is.

Looking back, I wonder how this would be with some bretanomyces. It seems like a lot of brewers are riding that bandwagon. Put some Jubel on brett and watch the ratings soar!
