Reviewed 4/10/10

Poured into a tulip with a dark brown, non-transparent body. 1 finger, tan head that fades to 1/4 finger.

Smell was of toffee and caramel. Some burnt aromas as well along with a slight breadiness and some mild sweet maltiness.

Taste was amazing. Some hints of vanilla, bourbon and oak. Toffee and caramel are mirrored in the flavor from the aroma. Some mild raisin flavors along with a mild sweetness and hints of honey. Good maltiness as well. Not to much bitterness but enough to help balance the flavor.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation followed by a mildy sticky finish.

Good drinkability although there were some signs of ABV.

I can't wait to see how some age effects this beer. Very good already but I see it being very very smooth in a year or two.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 2010. Best after 29 January 2011.

A: Dark, impenetrable ruby. No head.

S: Sweet, boozy fruits. Spicy and dark. Loads of brown sugars. A little oxidized.

T: A bit flat, honestly. Old and mehhh. Strongly and pleasantly bitter (coffee? hops? alcohol?). It never really improves, but it is pleasant. Bright fruit and sharp alcohol.

M: Kind of flat and boring.

O: Disappointing after so many years, but not un-bad. Old ale-y.

Beautiful ruby red/amber/copper color.

Smell is funky, musty, grape, boozy, sweet, spicy and earthy

Mouthfeel is very very thin, surprisingly thin

Taste is sweet, funky, winey, metallic, slight spice or every so slight burn from alcohol.

Overall: keeping this review pretty simple and to the point: it's just okay. Not great, not horrible. If this is supposed to be aged for 10 years, I don't see it happening. In my opinion, it's on the downward slope, but maybe it's on the upswing in a few years. Overall, slightly disappointed, but certainly drinkable.
