Thank goodness I scored a bottle of this beauty. I can't seem to go wrong with a Deschutes offering.
Pours into snifter jet black with no color change around the edges. Foam is off white and long lasting. With the good retention, lacing was big and sticky.
Aroma was also quite nice and balanced. Nice hints of pine and lemon zest, but take a nice back seat to this beer considerable roasted character. Chocolate and a touch of mocha are a joy to behold.
Flavor opens up with mostly lemon zest and hops at the front and slowly give way to the incredible malt bill. As the power of hops begin to fade, sweet flavors of roasted malt, chocolate and light coffee really take center stage all the way to the finish. Aftertaste is balanced with modest bitterness and roastiness really make it a enjoy to sip and savor.
Mouthfeel is right on the money. Carbonation lifts a lot of the flavors up, with a texture that is and good medium. Good for a session.
Drinkability is good, naturally. I would love to see this become a regular brew, heck even in a six pack would be good too
