A: Dark brown, just short of black with a huge rocky cap and great retention. Impressive.
S: Citrus and pine. Smells like Cascades. Underneath that, some roasted malt, but the Cascades aren’t giving much ground.
T: Strong roasted malt base is much more assertive and hops much less pronounced here. Bitter coffee is the primary flavor, along with pine, grapefruit and hints of chocolate. Finish is long and very bitter.
M: Medium bodied and slightly oily with moderate carbonation and a bit drying effect.
Not bad, but a little too bitter and rough around the edges for my preferences. Admittedly, I’m not a fan of this style, but liked the Alaskan version much better.

Serving Type - 22oz bottle
Appearance - Dark Brown With black trace, 1 inch foamy head with some nice lacing.
Smell - Smoked malts, grapefruit hops, some coffee, minor chocolate, some brown sugar, molasses, some spices.
Taste - Starts off with a grapefruity hop bite, mixed with some coffee and smoked malts. A bit tart, plenty of dark fruits also like plum and raisin. Some molasses and brown sugar provide some minor sweetness. Some smokey notes and final kick of dark fruits round this out.
Mouthfeel - Hops start out and coat the tongue. Palate picks up smoky malts, sugars and more fruits. Aftertaste is bitter, coffee and malts.
Overall - Very good. Nice amount of hops, malts and coffee. Balanced well, nothing is overpowered but this beer comes up a little thin and weak. Still, very good, and recommended for the black ipa fans.
