I have recently started seeing this beer show up in a number of the Spec's around town, so I thought that I would give it a shot. Here we go:
Appearance: After a careful pour it had about 3/8" of tan foam on top that was quite creamy looking and faded slowly. There was already foam sticking to the glass. The beer itself is black, but not as much as a Stout.
Aroma: I initially got lots of fresh citrusy American hops along with some toasty notes and some chocolate. The hops are the biggest player in the aroma of the cold beer, so I assume that they will just get more pronounced. Though hoppy, overall the aroma is quite nice.
Taste: The flavor follows the aroma pretty well in that the hops are the bigger player, but there is enough malt to keep things from being one-dimensional. The hops are pretty much in charge of this beer from the beginning to the finish, but there is some sweetness here and there. The finish has some chocolate from the malt, but is more dominated by the hops. the carbonation is ample and is helping to dry out the finish a bit to make the beer seem a little thinner than it is. The body is medium, but appears lighter on the palate as mentioned earlier.
Opinion: Overall this is a pretty good beer, and a pretty good representation of the style. This is a new style, but one that seems to be taking off quickly. I am happy with it, and wouldn't mind drinking this beer again sometime. Give it a shot if you get the chance...especially if you are a hop-head. You won't be disappointed.

A: Black with a creamy lightish brown head.
S: Lots of floral and citric hops in the nose, and maybe just a touch of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate.
T: Tons of pine and floral hops, yet not overly bitter, some citrus, some coffee and roasted malt. Hop heavy.
M: Smooth and full bodied, a bit creamy.
O: A great example of the style, and one of my favorites from Deschutes.
Serving type: on-tap
