Super get black, impenetrable even when held to light. Coffee coloured head rises above it and sits there nicely, slowly puffing down. Looks the goods!
Smell is super potent. As soon as I popped the cap I got a big whiff of citrussy floral hops. Upon further smelling there are certainly C hop notes in spades, along with a fairly present malt scent. However, the malt present is decidedly un-roasty. Reminds me perhaps of a dark german beer in its malt presence perhaps? Atleast on the nose. Smells great, either way.
Citrussy hops smack the palate first, followed by a wash of very soft dark malt flavours and some sweetness. Bitterness is powerful and lingering, giving a nice cleanliness to the finish. It's good, but it doesnt wow me. Perhaps a little old? The hop flavours dont really jump out in a juicy way. As it warms some more dark malt flavours become present, a little bit of roastiness perhaps, though its hard to tell apart roasty bitterness from the significant hop presence.
Feels nice in the mouth, a good rich creaminess at first cleaned up by firm bitterness.
Great start to my latest haul. I am not super-fond of this style I'm coming to realise so I imagine it will only get better from here with the beers to come.
Edit as it opens up a little more its a total pine forest on the nose! Wooo!

A: Black with a creamy lightish brown head.
S: Lots of floral and citric hops in the nose, and maybe just a touch of roasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate.
T: Tons of pine and floral hops, yet not overly bitter, some citrus, some coffee and roasted malt. Hop heavy.
M: Smooth and full bodied, a bit creamy.
O: A great example of the style, and one of my favorites from Deschutes.
Serving type: on-tap
