Chainbreaker – White IPA (5.6%) - Deschutes Brewing Co. (Oregon)
☆☆☆ ½

App: Pours a cloudy warm yellow with a thin head (approaching soapy) that dissipates quickly. Almost no retention, but some okay lacing up the sides of the glass. Some greenish hues to the extremities of the glass. There's a lot of sediment floating around in this one but thats not untrue to style.

Smell: Dominant wheat pungency like fresh bread dough. Slightly sour smelling with some very mild fruit esters that compliment the breadiness well. Hops are very subtle for an IPA, with only the slightest bitterness buried behind the wheat.

Taste: Wheaty and lightly sour with some strong lemon zest notes in the foretaste. True taste is subtly malty with that definitive wheat funkiness. Aftertaste is lingering but not strong. Very grainy, but overall very pleasant. One of the better balanced white IPAs I've had. That being said there's very little hops assertiveness to this. What is there is all in the aftertaste. Though it is a tasty and well balanced brew, it's a little misleading to label it an IPA. Tastes more like a Wit. Very dry with only the slightest hints of lemon and gooseberry.

Mouth: Light bodied overall, but with a lingering acidity. Carbonation is perfectly rounded and supports this beer well.

Home tasting, 12oz bottle into Snifter. 1/4/14.

Clear golden appearance in a pint glass, minimal head as served at a restaurant.
Taste is smooth and light. Belgian yeast prevalent but not overwhelming. Hops also on the light side. Smooth, refreshing, enjoyable. A decent offering, not great. A good fun session beer just in time for summer.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date. Being a "Wit" in a way the yeast was decanted in the glass.

LOOK: Turbid, yellow straw, nice head

SMELL: Fresh herbs, fruity, citric, yeast, bready, spice, hoppy

TASTE: Smooth, bitty, bitter, spicy, dry, yeast, fruity, citrus pith, bready, nutty, medicinal herbs, chalky finish

I love the whole concept of the style, sort of a mish-mash of styles but it works and works here as well. Worth a getting a sixer of it IMO.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip.

Appearance: Cloudy pale yellow with foamy, frothy, stark white head.

Smell: Lemon, grapefruit, orange (peel?), wheat, pepper, and other spices.

Taste: More orange than in the aroma, and it has a sweet edge, leading me to believe that orange peel likely was used. Strong lemon and grapefruit hop notes combat the wheat. Relatively low bitterness on the finish, but lots of spice, with notes of coriander and pepper.

Feel: Light, effervescent body that is very dry, crisp and refreshing. Great fit for this beer.

Overall: This has just jumped into my top echelon of summer beers. Although I do believe the IPA moniker may be somewhat deceiving, as it is mainly a ramped up Witbier.

A-Poured into a pint glass this definitely looks like a Belgian white...less than a finger of pure white head that quickly breaks down into just a skim layer. Fairly hazy and very lightly colored, its such a pale yellow there are tints of green when looking at this beer in the light. Reminds me of Hoegaarden.

S-Ok, now it no longer reminds me of Hoegaarden. There is wheat in there but it takes a back seat to the fresh aromatic hops, very fruity (definitely Citra), I think this is mostly hops but perhaps the Belgian yeast aroma is also adding to this nice fruity aroma. Just a hint of grass in there too. Nice aroma!

T-Yes this does taste like a white IPA. Wheaty and hoppy-the hop flavor is like the aroma. There is quite a bit of spice bite in here too. Coriander upfront and then you get the orange in the background with the hops having a strong influence on the overall taste. Plenty of different flavors in here, complex.

M-Plenty of carbonation, medium bodied, no unwanted alcohol burn. Finish is a bit long, exactly how I would expect a white IPA. Slightly astringent and mouthdrying.

O-I think I would enjoy this a bit more if it was less IPA and more Belgian white. But then again I absolutely love a good Belgian white and am not a big fan of IPAs. It has a really nice Belgian wit backbone. However, this is such an interesting brew I can see this one becoming quite popular given its uniqueness. Deschutes is so great at making the dark beers, this one in it's own way is such a well made beer I might have to give their other lighter beers a closer look. One of my absolute favorite breweries. I'm going to have to find a way to visit Bend. Well done!
