look: 3.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 2.75 | feel: 2.75 | overall: 2.75

Appearance: Deep yellow/gold dust color with a brilliant white two finger head. Scant amount of carbonation bubbles flow to the top. Significant cloudy haze is also evident.

Aroma: Hard coriander note up front in the nose along with some citrus (mostly grapefruit)

Taste: significant spice hits immediately. This is followed by the rind of a grapefruit that has been mixed in a cup of water. A very minimal cereal grain note can be detected if searched for

Mouthfeel: Very dry on the finish with a kind of flat grapefruit soda feel . Aftertaste leaves the impression of sucking on a grapefruit peel.

Overall: I really tried to find something I really liked about this beer. Unfortunately it didn't happen. I really like Deschutes as a brewery but this one fell flat ( both literally and figuratively). The call it a "white ipa" but drinks more like a wit without much bite. I would recommend the porter and stout instead as they are world class brews (955 characters)

The appearance of this beer is a light yellow, almost like the color of lemonade. A nice head of about a finger.

I pick up a lot of coriander in the smell, a spice that usually plays well with hops. But the hop smell is very faint. I pick up a few notes of other spices, citrus and grassy notes.

The first thing I taste is coriander, followed by lemon, maybe even a different type of lemon than an ordinary lemon. It's followed by some hops and the bitterness expected of an IPA with a touch of sweetness as it warms.

Mouthfeel is very light and easy drinking. The bitterness lingers in the mouth quite a while.

Overall, this is a great summer beer. It's light enough to drink in hot weather and has enough complexity that I can drink it pretty slowly. (756 characters)

I poured a white head over a muted yellow body. It is so hazy it's difficult to see the bubbles rising to the top. Head cut down to half a finger rather quickly and retained a good froth. Good lacing.

Smells very clean. Light crackery malt with yeast and grassy hops.

Similar to the nose, I get light, crackery malt with a little spice. This transitions with a big burst of yeast into a grassy hop flavor with a hint of green apple.

This beer is light-medium bodied. The carbonation is very biting. It refreshes first, then coats the tongue with a thin bitter layer. Dry finish. (582 characters)

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance- The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a big billowy white head of three fingers. The head very slowly fades over time leaving a nice level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell-The aroma is heavy of Belgian yeast and malts with a large hit of lemon and wheat. Mixed with these aromas are some lighter notes of a banana and a bit of a coriander spice.

Taste- The taste begins with a Belgian malt and lemon flavor upfront. Along with these taste so too comes some nice wheaty flavors which maintain a base taste for the brew. As the flavor advances the lemon grows stronger and slightly more sour to the end. A bit of grassiness and graininess begins developing in the taste more toward the end leaving a lemony and grainy flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the medium side in terms of thickness with a carbonation level that is rather average overall. The moderate characteristics of the two are rather nice for the lemon, wheat and yeasty characteristics of the brew and make for a rather nice drinker.

Overall- A pretty nice flavorful brew overall with a decent blend of graininess and a lemony taste, although slightly low on the hop profile for an IPA. (1,249 characters)

Pours a very nice cloudy pale yellow color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice one-finger fizzy/creamy white head, leaves a big island in the glass. The nose is malty, yeasty, with some coriander, bannanas, nice little touch of hops. The taste is very nice malty, slightly hoppy, yeasty, with a nice touch of fruits/spices. Medium body with a nice dryish finish. Overall this is a very tasty brew, and hit's the spot on a hot day. (453 characters)

Poured from 12oz bottle into pint glass

A - an unnatural light yellow color. slightly hazy. strong 2 inch white head.

S - floral and spice hits right off the bat. very aromatic. slight bready/maltiness coming through as well.

T - very sweet malts at first. same spice and floral notes as the smell but not as pronounced. slight hops on the finish. quite pleasant.

M - medium bodied, a little sticky. on the higher end of the scale for carb for a BIPA, but doesnt detract too much.

Overall - i normally don't go for BIPAs, but this one was very well executed. crisp and refreshing (585 characters)

Poured a nice cloudy yellow with a half-finger white head that dissipated into a ring of white that left no lacing. It looks a lot like a witbier, but with less head and lacing. Scents of pine, slight citrus, coriander and Belgian yeast. Smells a lot like a west coast IPA at first and then the witbier like scents emerge. Flavors of pine, orange peel, slight coriander spice and Belgian yeast funk. Like a witbier and IPA crossed. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderated carbonation. Easy to drink. It's an excellent beer, a combination of two great styles that work together in a unique beer. (595 characters)

Cloudy yellow with a green tinge. It's not visibly appealing except for a dense white head with spotty lacing.

There's not much to the smell. Lemon rind, corriander, and grain.

It tastes much more like a wit than an IPA. Lemon, mint, yeast, grain. Light flavor all around.

Mouthfeel is light with good carbonation.

Eh. It's a completely average for a wit and subpar if it's really any variation of an IPA. (412 characters)

Another gem from joemcgrath27...

A - Pours a hazy pale straw colour, finger of soapy head with solid retention and some spotty lacing.

S - Heavy citrus rind, nice floral hop notes, toasted crackers and wheat.

T - Much like the nose, the citrus rind and floral hops come through with a nice wheat flavour lingering on the finish. Sour lemon citrus and a bready malts linger.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and a touch of dryness.

O - Delicious brew whose flavour is well received on the palette. Well worth a try, easily sessioned and would be incredible on a patio. Another brew I wish we could access in Ontario, but know we will never have the pleasure of enjoying on the regular. (682 characters)

This was one tasty BIPA. Color is a hazy bright yellow with a ton of lace. Smells of coriander, Belgium yeast, clean hop profile, and mild wheat. Taste is very clean a slightly bitter hop presence, wheat, spices, and a dry yeasty profile. Mouthfeel was a bit heavy which I had no idea it was under 6%.

Overall mixed and matched for $2.50 this was a great white IPA. I could see myself getting this again. Easy drinking wheat based IPA. (437 characters)

Bottle > Sensory Pils Glass

A - Pours light light almost a neon like yellow, 1 finger of a soapy white head, mid lacing
S - Minor belgian yeast, dried flowers, clove, a little peppercorn, and some floral hops.
T - Fresh baked bread malt comes in with a little belgian yeast then yields to the mild floral hop bite.
M - Clean and light, refreshing.
O - Good BIPA, not a whole lot goin on, but overall just majorly refreshing. (428 characters)

Served on tap at the Blue Heron in Coos Bay, OR. Poured a quite hazy yellow like fresh lemon flesh with fairly small head. Decent lacing on the glass though. No light penetration really. The nose had lots of mute colors, mostly fruity esters of the yeast and some white bread. There were some subtle citrus hops, especially lemon and grapefruit. The taste had a little more bright notes to it. The fruity yeast was big on the palate and the lemons and grapefruit really came forward more than on the nose. There was a strong, clean bittering to the beer. Pretty dry and bitter finish. (584 characters)

It pours a full straw color, hazy with a white one finger head that fades to a ring with a little center cap and has light lacing.

The aroma will tantalize your love of citrus. Most notable is the Belgian yeast when it's cold and then notes of lemon, sweet pale malts, floral notes from the hops and some breadiness come out as it warms.

This being called an IPA may mislead you. If you are after over the top hop then this is not it. Just a warning. It is, however, very Belgian witbier-like with Pacific Northwest hops for mild bittering and aroma. I get honey from the pale malts and a big lemon taste out of it the most. Hints of spice from coriander are mild and the wheat provides a really creamy feel to it. There is only mild hop bitterness along the ride and not any more overpowering at the end than the beginning but they are floral. The finish is interesting and dry. Well Done!

The mouthfeel is definitely creamy and mildly sweet and fuller than you would think for a beer this pale! Carbonation is lively and lends to the peppery dry finish well.

Overall I think this beer is incredible! It may be lacking on the IPA front a bit and calling it an IPA may lose it some points in judging, but seeing that this is a fairly new style I think you have to be a little open minded in judging it. It gets a solid 4 out of 5 from me! So it's lacking a little in the hop department, and lacking a little head as well as the high alcohol content coming in just below 6. Those are the only bad points, if you can call them that. (1,534 characters)

On-tap at Fat Sully’s Pizza, Denver, CO:

Served in a pint glass:

The beer appeared a hazy bright pale straw yellow that produced a thin white head that dissipated in to a ring right around the glass. The beer produced some lacing.

The beer gave off a light hop aroma, floral with some spice.

The taste is good, like a witbier or hefeweizen, but with a bit more hops. The taste also had hints of some spices and a light yeast component.

The beer’s body was light, perhaps a little too watery; it was smooth and very easy to drink.

Overall, a good beer, but nothing to write home about. (595 characters)

12oz bottle into tulip.

A - Hazy light yellow/gold with a small creamy white head.

S - Lemon, bready malts, light citrus, pine, Belgian yeast.

T - Lemon zest, orange, grassy hops, hay, sweet bready malt. Coriander and Belgian yeast add a nice spicy element that is noticeable throughout. Finishes grainy and grassy with a very slight hop bitterness.

M - Smooth, creamy, light bodied. A bit too thin. High carbonation.

O - This is a pleasant, refreshing beer to have in the spring or summer. It's more of a straight up Belgian wit than an IPA, although hops are definitely present. Pretty good. (599 characters)

Deschutes Chainbreaker IPA: These mixed styles are all the rage. Belgian IPAs and Whitbier IPAs.... I am all for it if the result is good!

The Chainbreaker looks like a Whitbier, light straw color, slightly hazy, very carbonated and topped with a pure white foam that laces well. The aroma has the citrus base to it, and a bit of flowery hops come through. Flavor wise, there is honey, lemon peal and a touch of hoppiness. Much more a Whitbier than IPA. It works for me, as I am a fan of whitbiers. Very good.

Give it a try if you like Whitbier, if you are an IPA head, you will be disappointed. (598 characters)

A: White with a light yellowish hue, good retention & lace.

S: Lots of lemon with hints of grapefruit & pine. Smells like an IPA.

T: This 'style' is often muddled, but the flavours here are really complimentary. It's a great wheat beer, without the spice, lemon is upfront, with some underlying grapefruit and pine. Solid bitterness.

M: Well-attenuated, light to moderate body has a crisp, dry finish.

O: Maybe it's just a fruity IPA with a bunch of wheat thrown in, but it really works. (491 characters)

I can't tell you why, but I couldn't get enough of this stuff while out in the Bend-Portland corridor a couple weeks ago. The gimmicky things usually turn me off. But this just won me over immediately.

A: fairly cloudy grain-grassy yellow... one can almost see texture (with)in the liquid... decent foam on the pour, but it mysteriously checked-out each time

S: a European spiced holiday cookie/baby-cake(sweet zwieback?)?...hops are on the nose, but they're muddled with the alternative spicing and the mild and inviting fermenting-dough yeast.... rising above mellow, alive

T: not quite a Wit, not quite an IPA.... maybe a slightly off-spiced, marginally earthy-floral hefeweizen or a lemon shortbread cookie.... delicately richer in fresh-baked white bready malt.... bright, feathery sweetish-flowery hops tingle on the perimeters on the palate, mild spicy.... the tasty malt carries on through, residual sediment-ester interplay

M: almost medium-bodied - doesn't have a dextrin-derived substance to the feel - maybe an almost unfiltered, yeasty texture, washes away with some retard... satisfying, organic heartiness

O: fantastic in my eyes and on my tongue.... won't blow you away, but it has an indelible overall quality - when you see it - you have to have one.... i don't know.... (1,293 characters)

A - pours a beautiful cloudy yellow with a 1/2 finger head

S - yeast/lemon

T - a quietly hopped up wheat beer. Bright and citrusy, but disappointingly underwhelming. Bitter aftertaste which quickly fades

M - Pleasant - crisp, clean, light carbonation

O - A fresh, drinkable summer session beer, with a slightly weak and underwhelming flavour (345 characters)

Appearance: Definitely looks like a witbier, almost milky. Nice foam that turns into sudsy lacing. A tad thin, but there are plenty of yeast particles and carbonation floating around.

Smell: Banana and cloves. Rather subdued, with a hint of lemon in the finish. Not has much bite as I'd like in an IPA.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Sour banana with a malty background. There's also enough bitterness from the pine. Active, light-medium bodied mouthfeel.

Overall Drinkability: This beer definitely found its niche. A nice wheat-IPA hybrid. Might be a bit too much for your average wheat drinker, and a bit too light for IPA lovers. (621 characters)

Chainbreaker White IPA pours to a yellowish color with a frothy head of white- colored foam that leaves little or no lace as you drink. The beer has a cloudy body due to the sediment at the bottom of each bottle and it offers a fragrant nose that combines scents of citrus, lemon, floral notes, wheat, and coriander.

This beer offers a taste very similar to its scent. The flavors of citrus fruits, wheat, yeast, and light coriander are the most obvious, but search a little deeper and you may notice other flavors present such as honey, bread, pine, and light spice. The beer is somewhat bitter, but is actually very snappy, crisp, and refreshing. There is a slight sharpness in the finish, but it is short lived and the flavor quickly returns to easy- drinking mode in seconds.

Chainbreaker White IPA is a tasty beer from Deschutes Brewing and it seems like it would be right at home served next to the pool on a hot summer day. It is reasonably complex, but still light and refreshing and it’s the type of beer that most anyone will find at least likeable enough to drink on occasion. (1,092 characters)

Poured into snifter glass. Nice yellow hue, big head with a lot of retention. Beer is clear and inviting and that's where it ends.

Aroma. Big banana peel estery with hop resin and wheat malt. Funky.

Taste is like a Belgian blonde cross IPA. Just tasted wrong to me.

Didn't get much past beyond the mouthfeel and dumped it.

Probably not my style and I appreciate the willingness to be creative but I could not get through this beer. (439 characters)

A: Pale yellow, cloudy. Decent head at pour disappates to just a rim and not much lacing on the glass.

S: Orange peel, lemon, floral, some spices.

T: More wheat than IPA - the hops are hidden signifcantly behind the fresh wheat flavor. When detectable the hops are mostly of the floral variety.

M: Light, citrus, good summer beer. Appreciate the different spin on an IPA.

O: Good change of pace for a summer brew. Wish I could get a bit more of the hops coming through as they are dominated by a fresh healthy wheat. (520 characters)

s: citrusy wheat, slightly grainy, maybe some earthiness in there. definitely some sweet lemon and orange zest, just a hint of spice near the end

t: its interesting. tastes like a watery wit up front. bananas, citrus, some floral flavors. those fade into a bready flavor with a sweet malt-like backbone. these are followed by pepper spice and earthy hop bitterness to finish this off.

m: light. even with the carbonation, this is still a light mouthfeel that definitely feels like a warm weather drinker

o: Deschutes is one of my favorite brews, and while this definitely isn't one of their best brews its not really bad in any way. it's pretty light, and not too complex but not bad in any way (801 characters)
