Pours out cloudy yellow. The head is white and has minimal retention. There isn't much lacing but all in all the beer looks healthy. The nose is peppery and floral with a good amount of bitterness. I get lemon, flowers and black pepper, plus a good amount of piney hops. The taste is bitter and spicy. I'm still getting that lemon and pepper. The finish is bitter and lingering. The mouth feel is not too heavy not too light. The carbonation is spot on. The beer goes smooth and crisp. A fantastic beer no doubt. I'm extremely happy this beer made it down to Texas. Ill be purchasing this quit often. At least as long as I can get it.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Ah how I love Deschutes, been wanting this for sometime now, let's see if she measures up. oops should have went for maybe a tulip.. ah so here we are..

A real green yellow and unfiltered like appearance. Thick and shocking bright white head, with a shiny glowing top and speckled lacing. I can't believe how green this is.

Nose is quite buttery diacetyl forward, although there's some fruit sense and dry airy yeast. This is weird one on the nose, it's kind of interesting, but sort of... well odd.

Palate hits with a very good malt backbone, and mild citrus/tropical fruit. It's hard to pinpoint this fruit angle though, sort of a mellow melon if I could say. Kind of gets into pineapple territory flavor wise a bit. Luckily the butter sense from the nose is completely non-existent on the palate.

Overall, I am just not feeling this one. Very different, but sort of not working out for me, and I just don't feel like wanting this again either.

Appearance: Pours with a solid, two-finger head of stark white. A bright golden color white light, straw-white tones on the outside. Has a pleasant unfiltered look to it with moderate carbonation. Could use more lacing but otherwise no complaints.

Smell: Wheat and hops up front on the nose. Mild notes of piney hops on the back end and lemon in the mix which round out a pleasant earthy aroma.

Taste: Earthy taste with wheat dominating the pallet. The citrus compliments the esthers of a (possibly) belgian yeast. Touch of hops on the back-end but not overly dominant.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light: This brew is crisp, light and refreshing. Could be just the thing on a hot summer day. Wasn't quite what I was looking for but it'll do. Not bad at all.

Overall: A solid beer rounding out another good offering from Deschutes Brewery. Not quite my ticket, a little too earthy (reminiscent of a farmhouse ale or saison) but well done.

Sampled this at the Blind Lady Ale House in San Diego, CA along with some great pizza. It may be sacralige, but I'm generally not a huge fan of Belgian style beers. There's some sort of strange sweetness I find off-putting. Luckily, you won't find any of that here.

This is a very refreshing beer. It's crisp without being too light. And the added hops (at least I'm assuming they added more hops to fit the IPA style) give it a nice amount of bite. It goes very well with pizza. Another fine specimen from Deschutes.

Bottle best by 11/16/12. Poured in to pint glass.

A - Cloudy pale yellow with a small layer of white head

S - Citrus, spice and belgian yeast. Some grapefruit notes in the background.

T - Belgian yeast and wheat up front. A good bitter hop bite with grapefruit notes and bready and spice notes from the wheat round out the flavour profile.

M - Light to medium body. Moderate carbonation.

Chain Breaker White IPA
12oz bottle poured into a hybrid glass
Best by 9/7/12

Thanks to Bonez05404 for sending this over as an extra.

A: Pours a bright light yellow thats the color of pineapple juice, thats hazy and has a small amount of sedimentation floating in the glass. There is a big 2 plus fingers width of bright white colored head, that hangs around for minutes before dissipating down. Leaves a good amount of lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: Smells sweet with citrus and tropical fruits, pineapple and banana aromas. Subtle resinous piney aromas. Really heavy on the tropical fruit notes. Pretty unique but I like it, a lot.

T: Again, tropical fruits on the tongue. A fairly big wheat presence. Some sugary sweetness on the finish. A bit of spice. Very tasty.

M/D: Heavily carbonated. On the thinner side of medium bodied. A light crisp mouthfeel. Drinkability is good.

O: Overall, what a nice surprise. I really enjoyed this one. The bottle says IPA, BA says Belgium IPA. But its pretty unique and doesnt fall neatly into either of those categories in my opinion. I enjoy the unique qualities. This would be a great summer time cook out beer. Its light, refreshing, but really tasty. Id drink this again, no doubt.

Straw hazy body with a white head that leaves sticky lacing on the glass, like a witbier should.

Smells of wheat malt and lemon, green grass, and lightly of butterscotch.

Tastes slightly sweet at first, there is sort of a soda minerality, then a little lemony sourness and a lightly bitter grassy finish.

Body is light and carbonation is pretty crisp. Has sort of a carbonated soda water feel.

Overall, this is a drinkable, hoppy witbier. A decent 6-pack to bring to the beach or to drink after mowing the lawn.

A-Translucent bright yellow, some carbonation, one finger head with some lacing.

S-Lots of spice, too much spice actually, orange, lemon, grass, some citrus hops but the spice is overpowering.

T-Spice, grass floral notes, orange and lemon with some bitterness.

M-Medium bodied, well carbonated.

O-A nice White IPA, the bitterness is there and the blend of orange and lemon is nice.

Appearance: Clear neon yellow with some visible carbonation. White fizzy head that seems to be sticking around.

Aroma: Sweet hop notes and some crystal malt.

Taste: As advertised, a hoppy belgian style beer. You get the banana, pear, and apple flavors of a typical belgian beer with an added hop character that is careful not to get in the way of all the belgian complexity (not that it's super complex). Finishes crisp.

Mouthfeel: Slightly higher effervescence than the average IPA and medium bodied (but a little syrupy). Decently refreshing and easy drinking.

Final Thoughts: On the one hand I'm not a huge fan of Belgian Ales, and on the other hand I'm a huge fan of IPAs. Chainbreaker White IPA presents a rare case where a negative and a positive put together make a positive. Not bad, Deschutes.

"White IPA?", when I saw the 6-pack. I immediately surmised it must be a wheat base - and so it was. While not a lover of wheat beers I was intrigued enough to pick it up because a friend who was a wheat beer fan was coming over to help me dig a 20" deep trench 25' feet thru my backyard to replace wiring to the garage.

The lower score I give will reflect my bias against wheat beer - too "sweet-sour, Belgianish" for my taste - but I will be honest for the style. All of the bellringers that set the mark of good wheat beer (look, mouthfeel and all that) were there. Yet my main complaint here is, "Where's the hops?!" - after all it is supposed to be an IPA. I expect some hop kick/slap here - but got none.

My wheat beer friend liked a lot - but this was after 3 hours of digging a trench - so take that with a grain of salt. I've only had two wheat beers that surprised me pleasantly - this is average and I don't see any reason for it to have the IPA moniker.
