S-strong hop aroma with a corander hints and what seems like banana
T-has a pine hop taste yet you get the banana and corander flavor in there
M-light body and medium corbonation
O-has a differant color than I am use to in an IPA, but was enjoyable

Very nice beer, especially in the Australian Summer.

aroma: honeyed apple, clove and orange zest

taste: clove, honeyed apple, spice, citrus, coriander, cinnamon, slight orange peel and slight grapefruit. Nice bitterness back of palate.

A great beer style done very well - tasty!

Cloudy pale gold/straw colour. Fluffy white head. Fair head retention.

Big lemony, almost herbal aroma. Coriander. Tart wheat. Light citrus. Wow.

Wheaty but with a massive lemony, geraniol flavour. The flowery character is intense as is the almost herbaceous character. The pepper and coriander add nice complexity.

Moderate body with medium carbonation. Fine.

A very nice beer. Enjoyable and refreshing. I could see myself drinking a lot of this if it were easily available. As it is, it doesn't hit the "special" beer note. Very drinkable.

Chainbreaker – White IPA (5.6%) - Deschutes Brewing Co. (Oregon)
☆☆☆ ½

App: Pours a cloudy warm yellow with a thin head (approaching soapy) that dissipates quickly. Almost no retention, but some okay lacing up the sides of the glass. Some greenish hues to the extremities of the glass. There's a lot of sediment floating around in this one but thats not untrue to style.

Smell: Dominant wheat pungency like fresh bread dough. Slightly sour smelling with some very mild fruit esters that compliment the breadiness well. Hops are very subtle for an IPA, with only the slightest bitterness buried behind the wheat.

Taste: Wheaty and lightly sour with some strong lemon zest notes in the foretaste. True taste is subtly malty with that definitive wheat funkiness. Aftertaste is lingering but not strong. Very grainy, but overall very pleasant. One of the better balanced white IPAs I've had. That being said there's very little hops assertiveness to this. What is there is all in the aftertaste. Though it is a tasty and well balanced brew, it's a little misleading to label it an IPA. Tastes more like a Wit. Very dry with only the slightest hints of lemon and gooseberry.

Mouth: Light bodied overall, but with a lingering acidity. Carbonation is perfectly rounded and supports this beer well.

Home tasting, 12oz bottle into Snifter. 1/4/14.

12 oz. bottle, with best by date 01/10/2014 printed on the label, so I'm just in time to save this beer from going over the hill. Another new beer to me from Deschutes, this time a white IPA, or a Belgian IPA, not a style I am too fond of, but I'm keeping an open mind.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a hazed lemon straw colored body with less than a finger of thin fizzy bone white bubbles for a head. Some thin bubbly white lacing. Fairly poor head retention. Not bad, but fairly unimpressive to look at.

S - The smell doesn't really come across as Belgian too much. Grassy / herbal hops - lemongrass, oranges, grapefruit. Some soapiness. Some musty yeast, but not what I would call funky, more of a fruity yeast presence. Smells more IPA than Belgian.

T - Taste resembles what a light-bodied pale ale might be if it had just a hint of bubblegum malt and floral coriander / mild clove spice tossed in. None are really evident on the nose, and all are pretty short lived in the flavor. Bready biscuit malt, lemongrass, orange, grapefruit, and fruity / earthy yeast.

M - Feel is crisp, lightly herbal, and lightly sticky on the finish. Medium bodied with decent, tingly carbonation.

Overall, an okay beer, but it's nothing to write home about. I'm not a big fan of white IPA's to begin with, and this one takes the subtle route, which I suppose is nice, but it seems a little too tame and pulled back, but it is approachable, light, refreshing, and sessionable.
