Deschutes Chainbreaker White IPA
My first white IPA. Chainbreaker is very pale golden color ale with some haziness. A tall fluffy head sits on top with plenty of lacing. Aroma is akin to a Beligum wit but is balanced out with a citrus hop bouquet that lightens the wit beer aroma. Smells wonderful in all honesty. Taste is like wow, light and refreshing hints of wheat malts, yeasty esters and lemon grass hops. Drinks smooth and tart with a bitter finish. Probably will be a hit in the summer no doubt, which would be prefect for that time of year.

A: Pours a hazy pale straw yellow in color with a light amount of gentle visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall white head that quickly fades to almost nothing at all (just the faintest hint of film over about 10% of the surface of the beer). Minimal amounts of lacing are observed,

S: Moderate amounts of grassy, earthy, and citrus/lemon hops. There are lighter amounts of lemon/citrus and pepper. Almost a very light hint of brett funkiness.

T: Upfront I detect light to moderate amounts of pale malts and yeast. After that, there is a light amount of lemon citrus with a slightly stronger amount of grassy, earthy, and citrus/lemon hops. There is a light to moderate amount peppery Belgian yeast present in the finish. Also, there is a light amount of bitterness which fades quickly.

M: Slightly less than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Very easy to drink, refreshing, and thirst quenching - this would make a very nice cook out beer in the summer. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, another solid offering from a dependable brewery.

A: The beer is hazy light pale yellow in color (almost like a Berliner Weissbier) and has some fine particles floating in suspension near the bottom and no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are light aromas of peppery spices in the nose along with some hints of lemon citrus.
T: Like the smell, the taste has initial flavors of lemon citrus and is followed by hints of peppery spices that linger into the finish.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but doesn't seem to fit into any particular style-it is more like a witbier ans less like a Belgian IPA.

A - Cloudy straw, white head that retains and laces well.

S/T - Yeasty funk up front, orange peel, coriander, spice, herbal hops, a little minty. Finishes with a lemony bitterness.

M - Light body, medium carbonation, very smooth, finishes dry.

O - Interesting mix of styles, but with the IPA designation, I was expecting more of a hop presence to it.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Adams cup

A- Hazy straw yellow with an 1 1/2" of white bubbly head

S- Citrus, Belgian yeast, pretty much sums it up

T- Followes the nose, plus some hoppy bitterness

M- Light body, crisp carbonation

O- All and all a decent brew, though my least favorite of the deschutes family, i can see it being a good session.

Yellow and slightly cloudy with a white fluffy head and ok lace.

Aroma is big and spicy, more like a Belgian than an IPA, although the hops are noticeable.

Coriander, lemon, citrus, wheat, and a good hop tanginess are all noted in the taste.

Body is light but chewy, typical of a wheat beer or witbier.

A very nice brew, easy to drink and tasty.

Pours a very light yellow color that remonds me of sunshine, the head is frothy and white sticking to the glass on the way down. Nice floral aroma with a ton of Belgian wheat and yeast, and lots of nice citrus notes from the hops, very nice smell. Nice bitter lemony flavor with wheat, yeast and some banana, grassy hops. It has low carbonation with a refreshing finish. this beer is really good, nice representation af a Belgian IPA.

Served on-draught into a New Belgium stem-goblet. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours a one and a half finger beige colour head of decent cream, nice thickness, and good retention. Colour is a pale semitransparent yellow. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: Straw, lemon grass, lemon, floral hops, and clean fragrant pale malts. Pleasant and appealing. A mild strength aroma.

T: Clean malts, lemon, floral hops, hints of other more vague citrus notes, and some cream. Simple, but clean and balanced. Enjoyable but lacking the subtlety and complexity I expect from Deschutes. Well built for what it is.

Mf: Smooth and wet. A bit undercarbonated. Too light and fleeting.

Dr: Drinkable but underwhelming, especially considering the brewery. I like it, but not enough to get it again. Deschutes does far better brews.

A= Pours cloudy/hazy straw

S= Not much aromantic hops here. I smell a bit of lemony zest.

T= The flavor is a tangy wheat citrus with a little hop bittering on the finish. I am drinking this in November but I can see this being a really great summer beer. Very well balanced and easy to drink

M= medium carb

O= This is a pretty nice beer, the best "white ipa" I've had. The man version of Blue Moon?

Before I can even appreciate the color, I’m hit with the great aroma that’s such a good blend of Belgian wheat and juicy American hops.

Color is a light yellow, slightly hazy, but not as cloudy as most Belgian wheats. White foam cap settles out fast.

Flavor is really nice, though seems to lean more on the Belgian wheat side. Lots of coriander spice, which is complemented by vegetal/earthy flavor and a bitter finish. Body is on lighter side but doesn’t feel too thin. The finish really lingers with orange, coriander, and biting hops.

Very enjoyable and easy to drink! Solid Deschutes brew. Stacks up nicely against all the other new hoppy wheats out there.

Billed as a Belgian IPA, this one pours a very light, pale yellow, with big head and extensive lacing. Smells clean, and lemon and light malt, not picking up lots of IPA hoppy goodness. Tastes a bit bitter, mostly on the citrus side, and wheat, and yeast, but not detecting much of the claimed 'spices added.' Might be coriander but really noticing this much. Mouthfeel is fast, and wet, and fussy and refreshing...not heavy like some IPA's. I think the hops could be more aggressive, and complex to match the IPA label, but this is a good beer. May be sessionable.

12oz bottle, best before 01/05/13.
Pours a pale, pale, bright, hazy, straw color with a tall, white, frothy head that holds excellent retention and leaves plenty of lacing on the glass. Aromas are wheat, freshly squeezed lemon juice, citrus, wheat, yeast, and grass. Tastes are equally as fresh with lemon, grass, wheat, and yeast dominating the palate in unison. Mouth-feel is smooth but on the resiny side, finishes sharp and crisp, and semi-dry. Leaves a prickle on the finish with some white pepper. Nice and fresh, with a good balance of flavors.

Big white head falls into a decent lacing with a small biscuit like head staying atop a pale straw golden colored beer. Pretty good carbonation on this slightly cloudy beer.

A light citrusy hops aroma with lemon dominating and drowning out whatever else might be trying to come forth.

Light lemony citrus hops mixed with some light wheat grains taste with some light bitterness.

A lighter dryish aftertaste on this light bodied beer.

This white IPA has a decent light wheat beer taste.

Picked up a sixer at Total Wine back in early August for $6.99. Best by 11/16/12. Down to the last bottle so i figured i better officially review it.

Beer poured a cloudy straw yellow with an OK head that is dissipating quickly.

Nose is a nice aroma of citrus hops.

Taste is pretty well balanced between pale malts and citrusy hops with hints of coriander. Hops win in the end.

Mouthfeel is light and refreshing yet interesting because of the amount of hopping leaves a nice little trail of bitterness.

Overall a very solid brew, definitely worthy to try!

Pours a hazy pale golden wheat color with a soapy, white head. Aroma is lemony citrus and notes of Belgian yeast. Light, crisp, wet mouthfeel, with a mild carbonation burn at the finish. Flavor is comprised of Belgian yeast, lemon, and a bit like a pilsner, a little like a white Belgian, and some like a pale ale. Decent, interesting, beer.

Pours a hazy dirty yellow with a white head, that doesn't stick around for too long. A nice sweet and fruity aroma - lemons and clementine -, some pepper, with just a touch of some tartness to it. Interesting. Flavor follows suit quite well, very bright while also being sweet lemon and clementine on top of a wheat underbelly. Not much bitterness. A nice crisp mouthfeel. Overall, pretty good beer. However, I am not a wheat fan and after about halfway through the bottle I find that wheat malt starts to begin creeping up on me. Good beer objectivelly, not quite for me subjectivelly.

Poured from a bottle into a weizen glass.

A - Pours a hazy straw-yellow with a big fluffy three-finger head with fades quickly. Not much lacing to speak of.

S - Nice aroma of lemongrass, floral hops, and the slightest hint of Belgian yeasts.

T - Lush citrus wheat flavor forward, but nicely supported by light, floral hops. Getting hints of coriander, and rosewater as well. Spices enhance and take a backseat rather than overwhelm. A hint of cracker malt and Belgian yeast "twang" in the finish. Not really "balanced" in terms of hops/malt, but it IS balanced when it comes to spice versus hops.

M - Light bodied with prickly carbonation. Nice "wet" finish.

O - Not the biggest fan of this style, but I really enjoyed this brew, as the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts, and the whole thing comes together really nicely. A great summer beer. Adding to my list of favorites.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, best by 1/05/13. This pours a slightly hazy light yellow, straw color with a large white head which has good retention, and leaves a lacing. The smells are of belgian yeast esters, banana, cloves, light hops with crisp light malts. The feel is medium to light. The taste is decent, a little belgian funk, some banana, light hops (not IPA hops) and some crisp malts.

Cloudy appearance with white head that shows some stamina. More yellow than much darker.
Soft malt and nicely hopped not too aggressively in both the aroma and taste. Most flavors are soft and blended nicely. Belgian yeast intermingles nicely. A balanced yet fairly complex drink.
Full carbonation with a moderate feel.
Enjoyable drink.

Pours out cloudy yellow. The head is white and has minimal retention. There isn't much lacing but all in all the beer looks healthy. The nose is peppery and floral with a good amount of bitterness. I get lemon, flowers and black pepper, plus a good amount of piney hops. The taste is bitter and spicy. I'm still getting that lemon and pepper. The finish is bitter and lingering. The mouth feel is not too heavy not too light. The carbonation is spot on. The beer goes smooth and crisp. A fantastic beer no doubt. I'm extremely happy this beer made it down to Texas. Ill be purchasing this quit often. At least as long as I can get it.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Ah how I love Deschutes, been wanting this for sometime now, let's see if she measures up. oops should have went for maybe a tulip.. ah so here we are..

A real green yellow and unfiltered like appearance. Thick and shocking bright white head, with a shiny glowing top and speckled lacing. I can't believe how green this is.

Nose is quite buttery diacetyl forward, although there's some fruit sense and dry airy yeast. This is weird one on the nose, it's kind of interesting, but sort of... well odd.

Palate hits with a very good malt backbone, and mild citrus/tropical fruit. It's hard to pinpoint this fruit angle though, sort of a mellow melon if I could say. Kind of gets into pineapple territory flavor wise a bit. Luckily the butter sense from the nose is completely non-existent on the palate.

Overall, I am just not feeling this one. Very different, but sort of not working out for me, and I just don't feel like wanting this again either.

Appearance: Pours with a solid, two-finger head of stark white. A bright golden color white light, straw-white tones on the outside. Has a pleasant unfiltered look to it with moderate carbonation. Could use more lacing but otherwise no complaints.

Smell: Wheat and hops up front on the nose. Mild notes of piney hops on the back end and lemon in the mix which round out a pleasant earthy aroma.

Taste: Earthy taste with wheat dominating the pallet. The citrus compliments the esthers of a (possibly) belgian yeast. Touch of hops on the back-end but not overly dominant.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light: This brew is crisp, light and refreshing. Could be just the thing on a hot summer day. Wasn't quite what I was looking for but it'll do. Not bad at all.

Overall: A solid beer rounding out another good offering from Deschutes Brewery. Not quite my ticket, a little too earthy (reminiscent of a farmhouse ale or saison) but well done.

Sampled this at the Blind Lady Ale House in San Diego, CA along with some great pizza. It may be sacralige, but I'm generally not a huge fan of Belgian style beers. There's some sort of strange sweetness I find off-putting. Luckily, you won't find any of that here.

This is a very refreshing beer. It's crisp without being too light. And the added hops (at least I'm assuming they added more hops to fit the IPA style) give it a nice amount of bite. It goes very well with pizza. Another fine specimen from Deschutes.

Chain Breaker White IPA
12oz bottle poured into a hybrid glass
Best by 9/7/12

Thanks to Bonez05404 for sending this over as an extra.

A: Pours a bright light yellow thats the color of pineapple juice, thats hazy and has a small amount of sedimentation floating in the glass. There is a big 2 plus fingers width of bright white colored head, that hangs around for minutes before dissipating down. Leaves a good amount of lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: Smells sweet with citrus and tropical fruits, pineapple and banana aromas. Subtle resinous piney aromas. Really heavy on the tropical fruit notes. Pretty unique but I like it, a lot.

T: Again, tropical fruits on the tongue. A fairly big wheat presence. Some sugary sweetness on the finish. A bit of spice. Very tasty.

M/D: Heavily carbonated. On the thinner side of medium bodied. A light crisp mouthfeel. Drinkability is good.

O: Overall, what a nice surprise. I really enjoyed this one. The bottle says IPA, BA says Belgium IPA. But its pretty unique and doesnt fall neatly into either of those categories in my opinion. I enjoy the unique qualities. This would be a great summer time cook out beer. Its light, refreshing, but really tasty. Id drink this again, no doubt.
