Received an unexpected bottle of this in a BIF Box from canadianghetto so decided to pop one well in advance of the 6/15/2012 best after date.
Age doesn't matter. Yeah, it's a touch hot, and yes, some of the tastes may be a touch pronounced and individual but, damn, this is still one excellent beer.
The bottle actually provides nice tasting notes, I'm presuming for farther on down the road because everything is right up in your face with this. Again, its easy to pick apart the pieces in the nose, and the taste but they blend nicely at this young age and even more with a few minutes to warm in the glass.
The chillies are present in the aroma with an eye opening/nose tingling note and the orange is clearly there at the end when the bitter pith cuts through and lingering bitterness. There are coffee, chocolate, wood and malt fighting across the palate and a bite that could be booze or capsaicin.
The bourbon is there, this is boozy, more so than the other variations/years of this I've had. This is the first time I've had a Black Butte in advance of it's best before date and I wouldn't hesitate to acquire a case of this, drinking 1/2 now and setting the other half aside to try throughout the years. It's nicely carb'd now as well.

Glass: 10-oz. glass
From: Post Street Ale House in Spokane, Wash.
Purchased: March 18, 2014
Consumed: March 18, 2014
Misc.: The board on the wall said it was the XIII, but I'm pretty sure that was wrong. I even took a photo of it.
Poured a dark brown color with one finger of khaki tan head when I got it. Sporadic uneven lacing along the sides. Above average retention on the top.
Smelled caramel, toffee, Rolos, butterscotch, dry-hopped, bourbon, chocolate and faint vanilla.
Tasted caramel, toffee, light bourbon, chocolate, cherry, dry-hopped and slight butterscotch. So good.
Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming finish.
This beer was just so good. I only wish I would have gone back to try some more another night.
