On-tap @ the Dray, served in a tulip.
A- Poured a dark, inky black hue. Thick, creamy, mocha fluffed head w/ shades of dark reds and browns- A color complexity reminiscent of quality espresso crema. Velvety lace adheres nicely to the glass with each sip.
S- Fresh bittersweet chocolate, cream, very light vanilla and smoked oaky textures. A small undertone of burnt plastic. Roasted malts and coffee notes really started to shine as it warmed, with mostly bouquets of chocolate and trickled hints of misty whisky dominating the smell throughout. Aromas were lighter on the nose than expected for such a powerhouse beer, but still held an intimate intricacy.
T- Initial flavors of spicy chocolate, licorice, orange truffles, and light, smokey whisky swarm the palate. Finishes vividly dark with roasted coffee bitterness, smoked wood, rich dark chocolate and toasted nuts that linger in the throat. A hint of fresh, grassy, piney hops are detectable, tucked beneath a rich bed of dark ambience. As it warmed, notes of raisin and slightly tart dark fruits emerged.
MF- Smooth, big bodied, with a medium to light carbonation. A heavy beer that didn't have an overwhelming heaviness in the mouth. Small heat, maybe from the chilies and the booze.
O- For such a rich beer, this was really easy to drink and the high ABV was deceitfully hidden. Exceptional appearance- the thickness and color of the head hypnotized me with each small sip. A mature and complex beer that will become magnificent with age; the great grandaddy to the regular (but extremely tasty) Black Butte Porter. A majestic offering from Deschutes that sparked imagery and provided an escape from mundane specialty porters. Grab a few of these and age appropriately, you won't be disappointed.
