(From a tulip glass)
Appearance: The Stoic is almost clear, a dull amber in colour, with a tiny head that dissipated quickly, leaving no lacing. Lots of sediment.
Smell: Surprisingly bold, given the appearance. Pomegranate dominates my nose, with vanilla as a sidekick. It's sweet and floral. Banana become progressively more apparent. I don't smell any alcohol at all.
Taste: Very sweet. Quite malty. The flavours aren't as distinct as the scents, but I can taste the pomegranate, and perhaps some of that banana. One would never guess that this is 11% ABV. Never.
Mouthfeel: Gassy. Fizzy. It reminds me of Strongbow. The body is on the full side but the raw fizz is too much for my taste. There's a bit of a foamy finish too, and that's putting me off.
Overall: My nose liked this much more than my mouth did. I'm a big fan of the big quadrupels, so perhaps I might have been thinking too much of the great Trappistes. This is by no means a traditional quadrupel at all - it tastes more like a tripel with its spice and floral nature - but the beer just felt unbalanced and overly sweet, despite good promises from the nose.
There is a pleasant warmth that kicks in after a while, and that's very welcome indeed.

Amazing. Belgian yeast (actually a pretty light touch) along with some strong sweetness from the malt. Sweet like a good barleywine would be, a sweetness that seems totally natural in this context. Most beers that are in the style don't choose to go so sweet, but for this beer it really, really works. Absolutely my new favorite.
