Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a pint glass. This beer arrived to New Mexico 2-3 days ago and thus is relatively fresh. This is the 2013 edition of this particular beer.
Pouring the beer, I am struck by the light color, which more closely resembles a wheat or blonde than your typical IPA. It is very light in color and provides a much slighter head than other IPAs I've had of late. Still, the head is frothy and the lacing is abundant, so it isn't by any means to be dismissed.
The smell immediately hits you with citrusy orange and grapefruit notes, followed then by hints of pine and floral goodness. The malt is present and dances in between the hop notes, making a nice complement. Really, this is a great smelling beer.
The taste too is great, with initial hints of citrus and pine competing for the palate's attention, only to be followed by a more earthy taste and dry bitterness. The beer seems to have a whole lot going on and in a good way. It sips smoothly and the bitterness and dryness only emerge at the end as a quiet afterthought, making this a stellar beer. It's really quite good.
