Notes/Commercial Description:
Like fresh powder, it’s a seize-the-moment thing. This year we've chased down Virgil Gamache Farms' famed Amarillo hops. At harvest, we rush the hops from the vine to our kettles to ensure we capture the purest, juiciest essence of the hop flower in every beer. Enjoy the bright, bold aroma and flavor that comes but once a year.

Pours into an imperial pint glass a dull lighter golden with a very well defined almost creamy-like sticky white head, great definition and lacing from the top.Floral and citric notes in the nose along with some mint, faint sweet booze is dtected as well.Flavors of hop complexity first off I get some sweet onion and mango with lesser pine underneath,a sweet biscuit base along with some boozy sweetness in the finish, but not overly sweet.Wow alot of subtle complexities here makes for a very good "big" IPA,well done.

22 oz bottle, best by 12/27/12. Pours clear light straw yellow with a medium frothy white head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is grainy, slightly vegetal, malts and grassy metallic hops.

The flavor is sweet vegetal biscuity malts with a good sized grassy (slightly minty) bitterness in the finish. There's a bit of a charred hop aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, not my cup of tea. Vegetal, biscuity malts with grassy hops.

22oz brown bomber with a freshness date.

LOOK: Clear pale golden yellow hue, epic lacing

SMELL: Fresh smashed oranges, pith, rind, zest, pulp, hemp, fresh grass, mildly grainy, stone fruit, very hoppy

TASTE: So juicy, smooth, nice crispness, moderate sized body, tangerines, mint, peppery, blonde tobacco, pungent, mild bitterness, leafy, faintly vegtal, bready, malty, peppery, drying grassy finish

This is perhaps one of the biggest fresh hopped ales to come my way, threw some people for a loop. LOL. Thankfully my palate can handle this massive attack of hops. If you are not seeking this brew out you will regret it.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Surprisingly pale yellow-gold with massive stark white head, leaving some lacing.

Smell: Definitely Cascade, with lots of orange and grapefruit, but this is the juiciest smelling Cascade ever. Also, notes of lemon and spice.

Taste: Exceedingly juicy taste as well. The orange, grapefruit and lemon are all at the forefront. The malt backing is very Pilsner like - more crackery and grassy than toasted. Different, but good. Finish is spicy and only moderately bitter. The lemon carries through on the finish but manages to stay on the positive side of refreshing vs. solvent-like (just barely).

Feel: Smooth, creamy body with moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: Ultimately, this is more of a fresh hop Pilsner/IPA hydrid than a true IPA. Deschutes Hop Trip still reigns supreme for their hoppy beers.

The 2013 Amarillo version is a titch better than the 2012 Cascade. More of a tart grapefruit aroma and taste than noted in the above review.

Drunk straight out of the bomber. Picked it up at Whole Foods to have with dinner there.

Nice crisp flavor, refreshing. The Amarillo hops really add a nice kick to this beer. I have always liked Deschutes and this is my new favorite of theirs.

I'm glad I picked up two.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass. Bottle says best by 12/27/12

Appearance: Pours a bright pale golden orange with a lot of fast rising bubbles. Big four finger white head with pretty good retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A nice citrus forward aroma that is actually fairly subtle considering the style. Upfront is a burst of citrus orange and peel along with some hints of pineapple, lemon zest, and grapefruit. Some grassy hops with a light hint of pine. Some soft pale malts and grains with hints of cracker and biscuit. Oranges are the stand out smell here. The other scents are kind of light.

Taste: Like the aroma indicates, a primarily citrus orange driven taste. Big taste of oranges, peel, and pulp up front with some notes of pineapple, tangerine, lemon zest, and a little grapefruit. A taste of grass and pine gives a little spice. Bready pale malts along with wheat grains give a taste of cracker and biscuit behind the citrus. Taste is kind of tame for the style but the orange is very good.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy, juicy and pretty smooth. Has a pretty drying finish.

Overall: This is far from what you would expect from a typical big fresh hop IPA. That said, its a pretty nice beer for what it is. Has a very nice citrus orange taste with a nice dry feel.

Pours out a mostly orangeish and gold color, nice white laundry soapish white head. Aroma was pretty muted, came off extremely as an English ipa. Lacked dry hop character.
What exactly is fresh hop about this?

Taste, man, this really does not seem like a fresh hop ipa. More like an esb or english ipa at best, and even that is kind of pushing it. Bready, floral malt aspect, hops are bitter, grapefruit at times, but very mellow. Truly one of the "balanced" ipas, or if anything, leaning away from balance to the light malt character sweetness. There are no off flavors, but it seems completely mislabeled style wise. Alcohol remains hidden, kind of surprised that its about 7 and a half.

I guess if you're looking for the lightest, mildest fresh hop ale made, this is your beer. I'm kinda meh on it.

Poured a clear yellow with a one finger white head and abundant bubbles. It looks a bit more like a lager than an IPA, which is odd. Scents of citrus, grapefruit pith, slight mango and pine. Very crisp and fruity, with pine balancing the fruit and citrus aromas. True to style. Taste has a good level of hop bitterness with citrus pith, pine resin, grapefruit and faint hints of tropical fruit, with a present, though subdued, bit of malt and a slight spiciness on the aftertaste. Very nice, the hop flavors are at the forefront and really lead to a nice flavor. Mouthfeel is light bodied with moderate carbonation and a bit of a slick and oily finish. The mouthfeel is quite true to form for an IPA, though maybe a slight bit too light bodied. Overall this is a good fresh hop IPA. It showcases the hops well, puts enough malt in to keep it from being unbalanced and is just nice and pleasant to drink. It's not quite on the same level as Sierra Nevada's Northern Hemisphere Harvest, but it's close.
