Like fresh powder, it’s a seize-the-moment thing. This year we've chased down Virgil Gamache Farms' famed Amarillo hops. At harvest, we rush the hops from the vine to our kettles to ensure we capture the purest, juiciest essence of the hop flower in every beer. Enjoy the bright, bold aroma and flavor that comes but once a year.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into my trusty new belgium globe.
Pours a pale gold, thick bone white head dissipates into a thi quarter inch creamy head. Smells of pale mmalt and citrus hops, bit of grass as well. Good hop profile on the first sip, not very bitter, lots of citrus, some floral and grassy flavors on the front and clean malt carries it through to the end. Thin mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Overall, I was excited to try this years version with fresh amarillo. Unfortunately I think. My expectations were too high on this one, for a fresh hopped ale I really expected a great hop profile, not just a good profile. Oh we'll, cest la vie.

Avoided this last year due to diacetyl reports. Happy to say there's none to be found.

Hazy pale gold, frothy white foam that fades to a thin veil across the surface, delicate lacing around the edges. What looks to be tiny microsediment suspended in the glass.

Citric hoppy aroma, tangerines and leafy greenery.

Creamy feel, pale malt and an almost banana-like creamy sweetness. Resiny light bitterness in the aftertaste, citric Amarillo up front, pale malt in the middle and aftertaste. Light feel but medium bodied. Substantial and hoppy for a wet hopped IPA.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Duvel tulip; best by 12/18/13. Label says 2013 version featuring Amarillo hops. Clear, light yellow to straw colored body. Three finger white head that has very good retention and nice looking rings of lacing.

Pungent aroma up front - right after the pour it is extremely earthy and fades to citrus hop notes on the lemon and grapefruit spectrum. As the beer warms, a sweet, bread aroma comes through with the hops. Nice aroma overall.

The flavor follows the aroma to a degree but the sweet pilsner malt flavor is more forward that I would have expected from a fresh hop brew. Still, the beer features enough of the citrus hop notes to make a tasty blend of the flavors.

Light to medium texture in the mouthfeel and no notice of the alcohol. Overall, a very enjoyable beer; even though it may not be in the palate wrecker end of the fresh hop beer spectrum, it's very drinkable. Eager to try it in future years if different hops are used.
