On tap @ the Deschutes Brewery & Public House (Bend, OR) on 9/1/11. Served in a 10 oz footed Pilsner glass.
Pours a clear copper, with ¾ finger cap of eggshell-white foam. This doesn’t diminish a whole lot, retaining with a ½ finger of richness and leaving back a robust cascade of lacing that settles into thick sticky swathes. The aroma smells floral and a bit herbal, with a lot of ripe tropical fruit that is made bolder in the nose by the sweetness of the malt presence here. A spicy leafiness and more bitter feeling fruit reside underneath, adding a bit more complexity to this.
The taste starts with fresh bitter grapefruit and a leafy feel that spreads out in the mouth. This is balanced by sweet bready grains and a flood of tropical fruit character (which isn’t quite as forceful as the nose is). A touch of dankness comes out across the backend before this finishes dry, bitter, and a bit spicy. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a crisp and lively feel to the carbonation up front, before this works itself into more of a sharp creaminess that is undercut by some oily slickness that keeps this moving. The alcohol is well hid, with a touch of warmth here that gives some pop to those hop flavors.
This was quite tasty and a great use of the Galaxy hop, with a well balanced blend of bitterness and sticky ripe fruit, and then a crisp body that keeps this pretty darn drinkable for nearly 7%. I could have easily gone for more than 10 oz of this. It was pretty darn good.
