Thank you, John.
A very dark brown with reddish brown highlights, this beer is capped with a dense, creamy, brown head with excellent retention and lacing. The head is so dense! The nose leans heavily on dark fruit and cocoa, with figs and dates, yeah, but raisins as well. Cocoa, chicory, dark caramel and a little licorice are noticeable. Milk chocolate and milk duds are also present. Yum.
The palate opens vinous and fruity, with a blend of an intensely fruity red wine, some vanilla and bourbon, and a light, milk chocolate note. Dates and figs are present, bit there's some characteristics that remind me of a fruity pinot noir, specifically the lightness and airiness of the flavors. The mid palate has chocolate chips, buckwheat honey, dark caramel and a little burnt sugar. Cocoa lingers on into the finish, and there are flavors of fruit, a little bit of vanilla and some milk duds that are also present. Medium in body and moderately carbonates, this is an enjoyable riff of the Black Butte anniversary series; the figs really enhance the vinous flavors. Recommended.
