Bottle says best after 07/23/13. Consumed on 11/10/13.
A: Poured from the waxed bomber into a Duvel tulip. Body is black, with a dense, 1.5-finger tannish/light brown head on top. Settles pretty quickly but leaves behind good sticky lace.
S: Immediately upon popping the cork I smelled chocolate and roasty malt. That doesn't change when it's poured, only becoming stronger in the chocolate department. Touch of vanilla, bourbon and anise is noted as well.
T: Chocolatey malt, vanilla, cocoa with some bourbon and oak present as well. Starts out chocolatey, with the vanilla/bourbon arriving mid-sip, along with anise or licorice and some dark fruits. Alcohol is noted as warmth at the back end and in the belly, but it doesn't overwhelm on the palate. There is a bit of bitterness on the finish, which provides a bit of balance to the overall sweet/malty/chocolatey experience.
M: Full in body and heft; this does not feel like your typical porter - it's more like a Double/Imperial Stout in both heft and feel, which is somewhat slick and definitely chewy. Carbonation is modest.
O: This is good stuff. Curious as to what it tasted like fresh, but since I only had one bottle, I wasn't going to ignore those instructions and bust it open early. . . . My first Deschutes beer, but hopefully not my last.
