A 22 ounce wax dipped bottle, best after 7/23/2013. Poured into a Deschutes tulip glass.
A dark brown liquid emerges from the bottle, appearing black in the glass. There is little mocha head formation (not unexpected given the ABV), but generous strandular lacing. A ring of bubbles and scattered patches linger on the surface. Aroma is of vanilla, bourbon, chocolate, roasted grains, fig, dark sugary fruits (raisin, date). A bit of ethanol and brown sugar towards the end. Flavor is of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, brown sugar, and roasted grain. A lot earthen notes, including the fig and some rich dirt. A bit of candied fruits (date, plum, raisin). Again some alcohol and more sugar near the end. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy up front, but becomes velvety towards the middle and dry on the finish. Rich and viscous the whole way through. Overall, this is a great showing. The alcohol comes through a bit more prominently than hoped, but then again, the best after date is still a year out. If this mellows out a bit around that time, it will be an exceptional beer.
