Read a few reviews and I knew this was a must check out place in Charlotte. This smaller store lives up to the hype. Family run (woohoo) The owner is super friendly, informative and helpful.

We were in town for the disc Golf world championships and must have refered over a dozen folks to the place during the week.

Well chosen selection of the good stuff. You will find plenty of worthy brew, from a bunch of local, regional and national breweries. Store is overflowing with character good beer options and good vibes

Plus pointers for out of town rubes like us on where to find some good BBQ, inside info on what is going on with the different local sauces and even a call to a BBQ joint for us to make sure they were open. Priceless. Toss in a nice pint glass and well what can I say but, I would be at this place all the time if I was local!

Support Brawleys if you are in town...

It was great to finally meet Michael at his awesome store. My Mom lives in the Carolinas and has been swinging by for years to seek out rarities to bring up to Toronto. This year's beercation brought us to North and South Carolina, and Brawley's was top of mind for a visit.

Found some rare treats and learned of the secret identity of the man on the bottle of Olde Hickory Daniel Boone.

Great vibe, super friendly owner (Michael), killer selection, and soon to be completed tap room make this a must stop for beer enthusiasts.

I see the high marks so many must be neighborhood people who frequent quite a bit and know the people who work here. Upon my 3rd visit and a few purchases each time, I guess I'm still a stranger, but that's okay. I drive a decent way to see places and check out selections, so I would at least expect a little friendliness.

Selection for the unknowns is what is on the floor. Some on shelves, many open cases or coolers. I did see a few things here I couldn't get elsewhere, but their Twitter/Facebook feeds advertise some specials, but I found they are not for everyone, only their regulars.

I asked why I would have a reason to come back if they wouldn't sell me what I came for, and was told they try to keep their regular visitors first. I didn't see a crowd (I was the only one inside or in the parking lot) and was there for at least 45 minutes looking around.

I understand the regulars but if the beer was released 4-5 days prior, aren't paying customers wanted first? I can understand holding special releases for a day or 2 after receiving them, but after 5 days? I'll be back again to see if anything changes, but I can go elsewhere, just hope they learn as it is a decent shop.

No taps at this time, but was told anywhere from April to November of 2014.

So I have never reviewed anything before and there is no better time than now to review the one single place/person that got me truly excited about craft beer. Almost 10 years ago I walked into Brawley's the day that NC popped the cap on the (at one time) stringent abv limit. Brawley had beers above the 6% cap that was in place just a day before. I wanted to buy the store out of all of these delicious goods so I could try all the new flavors that I had never experienced before. I got quickly shot down and the reason was that everyone should get a chance to try these beers as well, not just me. That was a new philosophy for me and I immediately appreciated what it was he was doing for the community. He had one of my favorite bands playing on the stereo which we talked about for almost the entire hour I was in the store. I felt at home and knew this was a guy that I wanted to give my business to. Since that first day I have learned a lot from Brawley. One of my first questions was "what is that spicy note I get from the 90 minute ipa?". That was the day I learned about hops. Every since, I have learned more and more about craft beer. Ten years later when I walk in that door we still talk about beer, music, weather and life. I still learn from him and I may have even shared some knowledge that he has gained from. Yes, he takes care of his regular customers which I am proud to say I am. This is a community store, not as much local community store, but a beer community store. If you walk in and ask for a highly allocated beer and thats all you have on your mind, chances are you will get shot down so that he can take care of the folks that help make that community what it is today. If its your first time in, let them know, you will be rewarded. After that visit, take some time to beergeek out and enjoy the conversations that go on in that building. It reminds me of when I used to go to the barbershop with my pops and experience the communal discussions that used to take place. You dont have to be a regular to get rewarded but contributing to the vibe that is created there rewards everyone.
As far as the beer goes, Brawley is the previously named Godfather of the craft beer scene in Charlotte. He and his staff make sure they get the new and exciting beers that come into the market along with all of staples that helped build the craft beer world. I'm an IPA guy and they do the BEST job in town to make sure what I take home is the freshest possible. As far as pricing goes, you will never see any gouging. He has the most competitive pricing of any privately owned bottle shop in the state and even rivals the big box stores and grocery stores that sell out of date shelf turds. They havent opened the taproom yet, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will also be the best around.
Everything about this place screams craft beer, community and family. Whether its talking with him, his always smiling and kind mother, talking beer trades with Shane, chatting with other beer folks or watching little Piper grow up. This place embodies small business and the community it creates. Cheers to the folks that embrace that philosophy and cheers to Boo!!!
