It was great to finally meet Michael at his awesome store. My Mom lives in the Carolinas and has been swinging by for years to seek out rarities to bring up to Toronto. This year's beercation brought us to North and South Carolina, and Brawley's was top of mind for a visit.

Found some rare treats and learned of the secret identity of the man on the bottle of Olde Hickory Daniel Boone.

Great vibe, super friendly owner (Michael), killer selection, and soon to be completed tap room make this a must stop for beer enthusiasts.

I see the high marks so many must be neighborhood people who frequent quite a bit and know the people who work here. Upon my 3rd visit and a few purchases each time, I guess I'm still a stranger, but that's okay. I drive a decent way to see places and check out selections, so I would at least expect a little friendliness.

Selection for the unknowns is what is on the floor. Some on shelves, many open cases or coolers. I did see a few things here I couldn't get elsewhere, but their Twitter/Facebook feeds advertise some specials, but I found they are not for everyone, only their regulars.

I asked why I would have a reason to come back if they wouldn't sell me what I came for, and was told they try to keep their regular visitors first. I didn't see a crowd (I was the only one inside or in the parking lot) and was there for at least 45 minutes looking around.

I understand the regulars but if the beer was released 4-5 days prior, aren't paying customers wanted first? I can understand holding special releases for a day or 2 after receiving them, but after 5 days? I'll be back again to see if anything changes, but I can go elsewhere, just hope they learn as it is a decent shop.

No taps at this time, but was told anywhere from April to November of 2014.

So I have never reviewed anything before and there is no better time than now to review the one single place/person that got me truly excited about craft beer. Almost 10 years ago I walked into Brawley's the day that NC popped the cap on the (at one time) stringent abv limit. Brawley had beers above the 6% cap that was in place just a day before. I wanted to buy the store out of all of these delicious goods so I could try all the new flavors that I had never experienced before. I got quickly shot down and the reason was that everyone should get a chance to try these beers as well, not just me. That was a new philosophy for me and I immediately appreciated what it was he was doing for the community. He had one of my favorite bands playing on the stereo which we talked about for almost the entire hour I was in the store. I felt at home and knew this was a guy that I wanted to give my business to. Since that first day I have learned a lot from Brawley. One of my first questions was "what is that spicy note I get from the 90 minute ipa?". That was the day I learned about hops. Every since, I have learned more and more about craft beer. Ten years later when I walk in that door we still talk about beer, music, weather and life. I still learn from him and I may have even shared some knowledge that he has gained from. Yes, he takes care of his regular customers which I am proud to say I am. This is a community store, not as much local community store, but a beer community store. If you walk in and ask for a highly allocated beer and thats all you have on your mind, chances are you will get shot down so that he can take care of the folks that help make that community what it is today. If its your first time in, let them know, you will be rewarded. After that visit, take some time to beergeek out and enjoy the conversations that go on in that building. It reminds me of when I used to go to the barbershop with my pops and experience the communal discussions that used to take place. You dont have to be a regular to get rewarded but contributing to the vibe that is created there rewards everyone.
As far as the beer goes, Brawley is the previously named Godfather of the craft beer scene in Charlotte. He and his staff make sure they get the new and exciting beers that come into the market along with all of staples that helped build the craft beer world. I'm an IPA guy and they do the BEST job in town to make sure what I take home is the freshest possible. As far as pricing goes, you will never see any gouging. He has the most competitive pricing of any privately owned bottle shop in the state and even rivals the big box stores and grocery stores that sell out of date shelf turds. They havent opened the taproom yet, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will also be the best around.
Everything about this place screams craft beer, community and family. Whether its talking with him, his always smiling and kind mother, talking beer trades with Shane, chatting with other beer folks or watching little Piper grow up, this place embodies small business and the community it creates. Cheers to the folks that embrace that philosophy and cheers to Boo!!!

I make it a point to stop by here every time I'm in Charlotte or surrounding area looking for beer. They have a great selection, always seem to get a larger quantity of the limiteds which makes it easier for me to get some even a day or two after the releases, and keep a nice inventory of staples. Awesome little bottle shop that you should seek out if you're in the area.

Brawley's is a very cool little beer store. I've been in hundreds of times & Michael (owner) is super cool and helpful; he was pushing quality beer when you couldn't find it anywhere else in the Charlotte area. The prices are good and the selection is too.

This is a great little local beer shop with killer service, if you're in Charlotte and in the area, drop by; you'll likely find something neat to take home. If you're looking for glassware, this place has a very nice selection for sale.

If you are in the area - go to Duckworth's for draft (about 70 amazing taps) & also stop by Brawley's, they're all in the same small area. Combine the three and you've got reason for a bit of a drive in.

They're working on opening a small tap room - I imagine it will be a grand selection.

Still, I cannot stress enough - if you're in the area, this is a must-stop-here spot.

They almost always have what I am looking for and always have what I didn't know I needed until I saw it there. Great place run by great beer people. I highly recommend making a stop in if you are looking for craft beer. Mike and Shane are always willing to talk beer and give great recommendations if you want to try something new. Enjoy!

I've been to Brawley's several times in the past month and have had exceptional service every time. The staff is very knowledgable, friendly and go out of their way to get what you're looking for. Sometimes these places can feel like a bit if a "boys club," where staff assume I'm there following my boyfriend around or looking for some generic 6 pack, but that isn't the case here. The prices are also great, on target or often lower than other retailers in the area.

I continue to want to like this place but every time that I stop here I am treated like an "outsider". I do admit that I am not a weekly customer but I have spent some money here over the years and would think that would mean something to them. I am not just the guy who shows up on Hopslam day. It seems like there is a group of people who frequent here and if you are not in that club then you midas well never count on picking up a new release.

While I do understand taking care of regular customers this place takes that philosophy to the limit. The owner is quick to explain his methods and friendly about it but you will walk away with a sense that he is not interested in new business.

I now realize that I may NEVER learn the "secret handshake" but that is okay because if you look around... Charlotte finally has several excellent bottle shops.

re-review

Ive been coming here for a little while now and this place is just excellent.
The service is the best, they are very knowledgeable and treat me like family.
They always show me what's new in stock (they known I'm always behind the 8 ball when it comes to new releases so they try to help me out) that is hard to get.
Mike is currently adding on a bar to grab a drink to chill or for while you look at the selection.

Brawley's is not the biggest store, but they have the best selection I have seen in QC by FAR, and they always have fresh local beer which is a huge plus.

Brawley's receives high reviews because it is a great place to shop at, from staff to selection, you wont be disappointed. Check them out.

Great shop. I buy probably 80-85% of my beer here. With the addition of taps soon, it will be even better. Great crew. Always willing to provide recommendations and thoughts on the beers. My 6 year old loves coming here and getting free Brawley's stickers.

Recently moved back to Charlotte from Baltimore with an increased interest in the craft beer scene. The guys at Brawley's have fueled that interest and always have some time to talk beer and make recommendations. They'll even ask my opinion if I'm grabbing something they haven't had before. I stop in a couple of times a week to satisfy my craving for trying new brews and haven't run out of options yet.
