Doesn't look liek much from the outside and it's quite tiny on the inside, but man this place is top notch. Great selection and the guy that was there knew his stuff. This is definitly a beer focus place and a BA heaven. Probably one of the best bottleshops I have been to. I'll be in Charlotte for awhile and I'm looking forward to beinf a frequient shopper while I'm here.

Prices seemed normal, nothing to complain about. With is being small I wish the place could have gone on forever since they had so much good stuff. But fore the size of the store it was definitly maximized. They have a good glass section to go with the quality beer as well. nice touch.

I was driving to see family about half an hour away and decided that I would make the extra trip. Mike wasn't there but his mom was very helpful(and friendly, she said that she did not know much about beer, but anything I was looking for she knew what direction to point me in....and gave me a nice little history of the shop(its been in their family a long time!). She wasn't sure of the price on one of the items(Aprihop by dogfish...one of the things I was specifically looking for) so she called Mike. Mike talked to her a while and then asked to talk to me. He suggested things over the phone, and was just really friendly....its rare to find people so willing to help even when they are not at work. This was my second wonderful experience at Brawley's...Once again highly reccomended. I found more than I was looking for, and they even said that they were still trying to restock from the weekend. I love this store. It makes me happy when an independent store is this good.

Let me start off this review by stating that I am a Brawley's homer! I have visited this place for the past few years and am just now getting around to doing a review. The beer selection is always great and if you don't see something you want just ask Mike. If he can get it he will be more than happy to order it for you. But much more than the great beer selection (nice wine selection as well) I really like the fact that you can tell Mike really appreciates his customers and his level of customer service is second to none. Lately I have found myself spending and hour or so in there just talking shop which Mike loves to do. If you are sleepin' on Brawley's all I can say is wake the **** up!!!

My first visit to the store this past week. Wow on many levels. Beer all over the floor in boxes made me feel right at home. Many many beers I can't find in my part of the world and all of them as fresh as they can possibly be. Mike and his mom were both there and as friendly and helpful to an-out-of-towner as they could possibly be. Prices were a bit higher than I've seen in other stores, but worth every penny. I will make a point of visiting whenever I am in the area.

As you can see from past reviews, this place is fantastic. I'm from Pittsburgh, but always stop in at least once when I come to Charlotte to visit family. Or, in this case, if I'm passing through on the way to or from vacation.

Mike is awesome. Flat out. Incredibly genuine, friendly, and helpful. Same goes for "Mama" (who is not his wife, though she was flattered by that mistake). They're always ready to chat and are very welcoming. Also, love seeing little Piper running around. Love it. A dad that owns a bottle shop. She doesn't know how good she has it.

I come in to stock up on stuff that I would never find in Pittsburgh, and have never left disappointed. All I have to do is tell Mike what I'm looking for, and let him do the rest. He even managed to turn me on to sours, which I didn't think was possible. I get especially giddy when he goes in the back to pull out a beer that's not on the floor. Have yet to encounter that at any place in Pittsburgh. Also, the prices are INFINTELY better than what they are in Pennsylvania, which is all but stuck in the prohibition.

Sure, the place is a little scrambled. Personally, I love that. I'm one of those people who gets stressed when I go into a home or restaurant and everything is pristine and flawless. Hate it. So, for me, boxes on the floor and vintage beer decor totally work. Keep it real, Mike.

All in all, best beer spot I've ever visited. Holds a special place in my heart. Great selection, great family that runs it. Mike was a pioneer of the craft beer/bottle shop scene in Charlotte, and for good reasons. Do yourself a favor and stop in if you're in the area.

Just moved to the Charlotte area from Wilmington, NC (Which booasts Lighthouse Beer and Wine--great selection of craft brews). Found Brawley's on BA and checked it out the first week I was in town. If you like supporting local businesses this is definitely the place to go. Great selection of craft brews, with stuff that you won't find at the grocery store or Total Wine. Knowledgeable and friendly owner. Went in today and they were re-organizing the lay up of the store. The owner's mother happened to be in the shop and I struck up a conversation with her. I told her that I had only been in Charlotte a month and found their shop on BA, she told me the next time I was in the store I could have a FREE beer mug of my choice since I was a new customer. If you are in the area, I highly recommend Brawley's.

I've been going to Brawley's for 4 years since I moved back to NC and figure I ought to review finally after today's visit (bottle of cantillon lambic and 6'r of Lagunitas Little Sumpin), especially with the potential that I could be leaving town again soon. Mike is the man and is always keeping his place stocked with the best stuff we can get in NC... which has come a long way in the last decade. If you are looking for a place to chat about beer, grab some unique stuff or just browse an out of control selection this is the place in charlotte.

This place cant possibly get enough praise. Michael Brawley and his store are key reasons why I love craft beer.

He moves through plenty of beer so usually everything stays fresh. His personal service and mom and pop atmosphere could never be replaced by the nicest coolers and largest selection on earth.

The selection is definitely top notch. He gets everything decent that comes into this market. This guy knows what to buy. Sure he has the "back room" set up but with the small size of the store and the volume he cranks out there really is no other way. If it was on the floor right in front of me of course I'd say "what do you mean you cant sell me 10 cases?" But thats alright I think myself and everyone else should understand that he has to spread the beer wealth around. Its not like he makes more money off me than he does you or anyone else.

Overall the best beer store to visit in this area by far (if not NC).

Stopped in to talk to mike yesterday and man o man does this place kick some serious ass. This review is based on the time I went in and Mike was there solely, not on the other times I went when the other croney was there.

First of all there is a pretty blatant taste for imperial stouts, hop bombs and rich belgian stuff as well as the sour and funky ( i later found out that's not really mike's thing but he carries a ton of sour funky stuff my favorite!!!) If it can be had and is worth getting in NC BB has it. Ton's of awesome stuff from Bell's, DFH, Avery, Mikeller, Nogne, Cantillon, and even shhhh some peche mortel!! 1 per customer tho. Also duck rabbit baltic porter which by itself is a reason for you to go there, buy this beer impulsively as if you had cancer and it is the cure.

Mike is nothing but enthusiastic about what he does, which is refreshing because most people at beer stores that I have been to dont give a shit, Mike is like a kid in a candy store and will happily assist you with your every beer need. He even through in a free glass and t-shirt! Mention you are a beer advocate and he will give you the inside info and point you in the direction of the really good stuff. Thanks Mike see you next time im in charlotte!

I can't say enough about how great Brawley's is. I just recently got to visit for the first time since I was in Charlotte for the week.

We walked in and were greeted by Mike, who showed us around the store and told us all about what he had been getting in as well as what he would be getting in soon and told us all about the store. Then he showed us some pictures from his trip to Maine and the breweries there. I knew I was talking to a guy who had a real passion for beer like I do! This is something that's too rare, even when it comes to owners of beer-centric stores.

What can I say, they treated us like family! Never have I been in a store where I felt so good about making purchases, not only because I knew I was getting well-taken care of, fresh beer, but because I was supporting a great small business that knows how to treat their customers and make a great experience for everyone who comes in!

Quality is superb, they take very good care of all of their stock, and it seems that Mike watches the freshness dates on the beers like a hawk. There's lots of beer in coolers, and some not, but it's certainly not too warm for beer in there.

I don't think there is a beverage store with better service than Brawley's.

The selection is top-notch for North Carolina. They had recently received the >6% Unibroue beers, one of the first stores, if not the first in NC as I understand. Now they even have Geary's from Maine, a brewery whose beers I've wanted to try for some time. Their selection is growing all of the time!

As for prices, you won't find better ones in NC, or anywhere else around here. Everything was very reasonable.

You must stop in here if you're in the area, or anywhere near. You won't be disappointed. I'm certainly going to be a regular, even though I'm kind of far from Charlotte. Thanks again to Mike and his parents for bringing great service and great beer to us!

Was one of my first stops when I started drinking craft beer. Mike was always kind enough to give me suggestions and help me navigate the complex world of craft beer.

Ive been to shops around the country and none hold a candle to this place. From a customer service perspective, Mike (and his mom) goes above and beyond. Where else have you been that welcomes you as a first time customer by giving you a free beer glass?

If you are in Charlotte stop by and give them your business. You won't regret it.

Made the hour and a half trip from Hickory to Charlotte today for a beer run. WELL worth the time.
Michael was friendly and very helpful. More like buying from a friend than a salesperson. Great selection of refreshemnts from the common macros to hard to find craft selections. He even broke into his backroom private stash so I could sample a new variety.
I can see myself making regular pilgrimages to see Mike and his pup.
I recommend this establishment over any I have ever been too.
Mike, thanks for a great experience.

original review - when store first opened
Left Total Wine the other day, and on a hunch, stopped in here before I headed home. I had never noticed this place before. This guy rocks! He carries every Rogue (or will order it) that can legally be carried in NC. He also has a few Dogfish offerings (he's a fan), some Sam Smith, North Coast, etc. He has a very nice selection for a small store....and best of all...price! He is a little cheaper than Frugal or Total Wine. A nice guy, great price, and as good of a selection as I've seen...particularly for a smaller store. If you are in this area, definately give him a try!

EDIT - 9/25/05
The cap has been popped and Brawley is taking full advantage where others are falling behind. Avery, Orval, Satan, Corsendonk, Rochefort, Gulden Draak, La Chouffe.... the list goes on and on! Great service and prices as usual... the only place in the Charlotte area to go IMO....
EDIT 10/15/05
Ok, time to give Mike the straight 5's that Brawley's Beverage deserves. I rarely give 5s for beers or BeerFlys, but I come in here about once a week, and every week there is something new that I can't believe he has! The Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock this week, for example. Additionally, he is acquiring a nice selection of glasses. I used to drive 3 hours to Vintage Cellar in VA before these laws changed.... now there is a place within 15 minutes of me that is BETTER than the infamous Vintage Cellar. That's right, it is BETTER... and that place is Brawley's Beverage - check it out.

Recently moved back to Charlotte from Baltimore with an increased interest in the craft beer scene. The guys at Brawley's have fueled that interest and always have some time to talk beer and make recommendations. They'll even ask my opinion if I'm grabbing something they haven't had before. I stop in a couple of times a week to satisfy my craving for trying new brews and haven't run out of options yet.

Brawley's in Charlotte is by far the best bottle market in the city. Not only do they have the best local brewery selections such as Old Hickory, Duck Rabbit, Foothills, OMB and more. They also have a great bottle selection from great breweries from all over the US and the rest of the world. If it comes to Charlotte it comes to Brawley's. Family owned and ran, the staff is both friendly and knowledgeable. They have a great wine selection to go with a amazing beer selection. They also carry a great glassware selection. Kegs are available as well, making this your one stop shop for great beer and wine. You never know what you'll find on the shelves at Brawley's!!!

I visited this place while I was with my family for winter vacation. Needless to say, I was very impressed.

The store wasn't incredibly organized, but it wasn't hard to find anything. I found some incredible stuff, like Peche Mortel, Black Albert, Expedition Stout, Black Ops. It was an imperial stout kind of day. And the service was great. I even got a few tips about what to get, and I didn't have enough money to spend now. I'll be back shortly to pick up a few other goodies I found. And since it was my first time, I was given a free glass. And for the haul I got, $64 was not a bad price.

My husband and I decided to make a special trip to Charlotte just to shop at this place based on the recommendation of a friend and the information here on BeerFly. It was about 270 miles round trip for us, but it was well worth it. We live in South Carolina, and the laws here make it impossible to get certain styles of beer, so we went to Charlotte to stock up on some of those styles. The selection was mind-boggling and much of it was refrigerated. I was able to get many beers that I have been looking forward to trying as well as some old favorites. The owner was not there, but his mom was very helpful and friendly. The shop is not very large, but it is jam-packed with an incredible variety of excellent beers.

I will probably patronize this place again, despite the distance.

If you go there, be sure to visit the Beer Cave - a refrigerated room full of beer. And bring a jacket, because if you're like me, you'll be in there for a while.

A true gem. Step in and you'll find a bit of everything from the freshest IPAs/doubles to Belgians to all kinds of really hard to find stuff you may have never heard of. The boxes are piled high because he has usually just landed a stash of something not likely to be around long. FRESH!! 10 day old Sculpin??? One week old Palate Wrecker. If you haven't had it you are missing out.

The best part of the experience is the owner Mike and when he is not there, you usually find his mom or someone who else who knows beer. Mike works hard to find you something you like. Keg beer selection is great. Don't wake up the baby.

Maybe .50 or a $ higher on some stuff but he won't sell old beer. Best customer service in town. Skip the Total Wine big box /maybe old beer experience. There is a reason Mike kicks of Craft Beer Week in Charlotte.

Overall--great service and value.

Everything you've read is true. Great selection of Belgians. The owner was very helpful and friendly. I was in town on business from St. Louis and totally lucked out as this place was in range of my hotel shuttle. Needless to say, the shuttle driver ended up waiting awhile. There were a lot of brews that aren't available in my area that I was drooling over. It was the first time I've ever seen any of Brooklyn Brewing's beers (and I've checked about a dozen states). I picked up the Black Chocolate Stout and their Octoberfest. The manager also gave me a Tshirt. There is a chance I will be back in a few months on business and, if so, I will be back. I wish I could have bought more, but carrying 2 six packs in a bookbag through airports is about all I can handle.

Stopped in today on the back end of a road trip through the south. Brawley's is a smallish place but easily visible from the road (and walking distance from Duckworth's), and staffed by the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. The first time we came in Mike was out and his mom was staffing the store; she was warm and welcoming, and was spot-on on all of her beer recommendations.

As for Mike, he needs no introduction since he's already a local beer celebrity and rightly so-- he is One Of Us, a true beer geek. The evidence is readily apparent just in browsing the store, particularly the "Beer Cave," where I found a keg (!) of New Belgium Eric's Ale.

The rest of the selection is impressive and organized, with comprehensive selections from local breweries (Terrapin is particularly well-represented) as well as more national ones; I found some rarities from Sierra Nevada, and they carry the Lips of Faith series from New Belgium (although I can't promise anyone else will find a sixtel of Eric's.)

Overall, this is a store worth going out of your way for-- there are treasures to be found here, and the staff are true BAs.

This place is just flat out wonderful. Mike kicks up the rating even over other top notch craft beer stores. He had his 5 week old daughter in his arm walking around talking beer. Guy was great. I drove up there from SC and hate when I shop in different states not knowing what to buy. Everything he recommended has been excellent. There is nothing bad to say about this place. The selection was great, but the service and the beer knowledge was as good as it gets. If you are in Charlotte it is well worth your time to look this place up.

Funny reading the post below. He also hooked me up with a glass and talked beer as long as I was able. My wife, 2 year old and 7 year old were in the car. Got the evil eye when I finally emerged but the wife was sure happy later that night when she dipped into the great brew.

Living in beer-poor South Carolina, I had been meaning to visit this place for the better part of a year. Finally made it up there last month, and the consensus on this place is correct, it's a great place to find beer. Sometimes it can be a bit pricey, but no more so than other great beer stores. Great selection of Belgian beers, and most brews you can think of on the East coast, plus mead and wine. No Stone, but that's hard to come by down South. The way they have the beer laid out is a bit random, but don't worry, the staff is very kind and willing to answer questions and step out and help you find what you're looking for. Very knowledgeable on beer as well. There's plenty more beer in their walk-in fridge. Also a very nice selection of glassware. Definitely need a return trip for some other stuff I've never had. Don't worry, it may look like a gas station in the middle of nowhere, but it's actually on the outer edge of downtown in a nice residential/commercial area.

I visited earlier this week when in Charlotte for business. This is a great place that I visited on the recommendation of a friend. Small, kind of cramped layout with boxes everywhere but believe me when I say that is a huge part of the charm. Its the type of place to spend a good deal of time browsing around. The owner, Michael, is super friendly and engaging and ready to show you around and help you find new or local releases. Selection is awesome and is heavily tuned to recent releases. The owner keeps the stock fresh and turning over.

When it comes to customer service Mike is as good as it gets. If you have any questions, he will be happy to help and give you recommendations. If you're lucky or new to the area he'll most likely throw in a free glass.

The store is no very big but he selection at Brawleys is as good as it gets in the area. He has a good selection of growlers in the back as well as kegs. There is always a good selection of North Carolina brew in stock as well as seasonals. This is my go to place for beer in Charlotte.

Everytime I visit family in Charlotte, I hit Brawley's. This time I couldn't make it, so I sent the wife on a mission with a list.

Owner Mike wasn't offended by a list, and enthusiastically helped her around the place. Great beer selection, and great people. Going there with the right attitude gets you greeted and treated like family. His reputation reaches all the way down here in Tampa, FL. Was at a bottle share with a handful of BAs a week ago wearing my Brawley's shirt, and multiple people commented. If you are in Charlotte, your doing yourself a disservice not checking this place out.

Picked up some local and stuff that doesn't get down to FL: Uinta, Cascade, Foothills, Highland, Mother Earth, Green Man, Olde Hickory, Moylans, Founders.

Thanks Mike for the goods. Hope you like the bottle I sent your way.
