My vision of the perfect afterlife includes sitting at the Galgenhuisje bar in Gent and drinking copious amounts of Hommel Bier (and perhaps a bit of the house Guillotine to provide some variety). I first tried this gem at my favorite spot in Belgium and I'm psyched to finally see it available locally (many thanks to Mike at Nikki's!)

I poured this directly from my cellar at 55 degrees into my favorite Chimay chalice.

This brew pours a golden, light-pumpkin, hazy orange color with a billowy, creamy head. Visible carbonation keeps the amazing head going throughout, while sticky lacings adorned the sides of the glass. A gentle swirl produces additional layers of thick lacing that seemingly envelop the glass. Subsequent pours produce a significant amount of sediment and “floaties”.

The aroma consists of candy-like caramel malt sweetness, a touch of vanilla, white pepper and coriander, clove, some yeast funk, raw sweet bread and a delightful bouquet of aromatic hops. A subtle champagne booziness

Sweet vanilla and caramel, funky, doughy yeast and slightly astringent grain flavors are rapidly engulfed by a poignant, yet delightfully balanced hop profile. Subtle hints of pepper, orange peel, lemon zest and coriander assist in rounding out the deep palate. Sweet postage stamp flavors are evident before a bitter, dry hop finish.

Well carbonated with a full, creamy mouthfeel, this beer is dangerously sessionable at 7.5%

This is an excellent beer and IMHO, the benchmark of a Belgian IPA. I was surprised and delighted to see this on tap at many establishments in Belgium. I certainly imbibed quite a few!

Goregeous pale yellow, slight haze. Nice pillowy head that sticks around and decent lacing.

Big Sasion-y nose, similar to a Brooklyn Sirachi Ace

More Saison. Lemongrass, bubble gum, light but punchy hop.

Wouldn't consider this in the IPA trademark, but overall a great Belgian Pale/Saison.

*you really get the hoppy IPA-ness in the backend of the swallow, it's coming to me now*

Quite a fantastic beer, and cheap(8$ for 750mL) for being so highly rated by the bros.

Picked this up a few weeks back at Top Hops in New York, having never tried this before. I was expecting this to be a "benchmark" beer that would serve as an example as to what other Belgian IPA's should aspire to and for the most part this fit that bill. The flavor was a little too complex for me but the drinkability was there and I was also hard-pressed to remember when something this light in hue had a pour that was this memorable!

The pour to this was astounding as the fluffy head, dark golden hue, cloudy appearance, and bubbles on the *side* of my pint glass all combined for an extremely pleasing first impression. The lacing was up to snuff as well, as lots of soapy layers made themselves felt once I worked my way through this. Not a strong aroma to this beer but there was some yeast and apple to be found in the nose. Both of those were present in the taste, along with the grassy hops, pear, candied sugar and booze underneath everything else.
