Poperings Hommel Bier loses its bottled shell with a spumous and unrelentingly giant head and sizzling carbonation. After a good four minutes the head finally settles down atop the shaded gold body. Intense and pasty lace adorns.
Nose is strongly wheaty with candi sugar and intensely yeasty aromas. Underneath (and at warmer temperatures) lurks apricots and slight suggestions of tangerines. Significantly fruitier than most BSPA's I enjoy, but not the wicked hop-bomb I might have hoped for.
On the palate, however, hops do leave their mark. Taste is sublime, somewhat akin to Orval without the Brett. Initially yeasty, the flavor emphasis shifts towards an almost cinnamon-esque flavor of combined alcohol and subdued floral hoppiness. An almost IPA-like afterglow.
Unlike 95% of the Belgians I experience and enjoy in small doses, I could drink this all day and night.
Mouthfeel is almost milky at first and finishes oil-coated hoppy. Addictably dry.
Get this now, if you even just remotely like BPA's. Wicked good, and shows Belgian-style brewers not to fear the hops.
