This is a re-review out of expiation for the past sin of reviewing a musty old bottle of a beer I always enjoy. Now, a fresher and better-kept one 33cl bottle with June 2015 best-by date served in a more classic tulip glass shape rather than my usual flared-top tulip, for what that's worth. It's a beautiful inky dark topped by a persistent finger of creamy foam. Smell of coffee, toffee, licorice, toast, brown sugar, quite nice but not powerful. Taste (now, properly) of burned toffee and caramel, a bit of banana and grapefruit pith, nicely held up by an herbal and a bit peppery, and not at all oily hop backbone. The feel is really spot on -- clean, but substantial, fulsome, quaffable. Justice done.

[Below is the original review from 07-13-2008, which rated 3.00 in every category.]
Just disappointed by a bottle bought recently from a grocery store in Brussels that I suspect did not handle it well. I now see it was suspiciously near its October consume-by date. My bad. So I hate to muddy the score of a worthy brew. Popping the ceramic top exploded a mist into my eyes and spewed foam. Dense, creamy, cafe-au-lait-colored head more than half filled the tulip glass. The beer is opaque, even held in front of a bright light, all dark chocolate with visible flecks of lees. The nose was almost all Belge-yeasty, with a hint of anise. (I remember more complexity in better examples in the past.) Burnt toffee leads the flavor, followed quickly by soft hop bitterness. The choco-malt that should be there to round it out (and has, in better specimens in my memory) is sadly missing -- worse, replaced by astringency that makes me not want a second. The mouth feel is slippery with alcohol; it's never been a chewy beer even my fondest recollections.

After a loud pop it pours almost jet black with a nice layer of frothy tan foam. Espresso and cocoa dominate the nose with hints of malts and dark fruits. Similar to roasted and bitter flavours obtained from an espresso but followed with a nice hint of sweet from the cocoa. Full body, very smooth with good carbonation. ABV is well hidden. Very nice balance between sweetness and the bitter finishes quite dry.

Very impressed from the point the bottle was opened until the glass was empty. Don't pass this up.

330ml flip top bottle, poured into La Chouffe
chalice. A: Very dark mahogany, pretty much
opaque, one finger tanned head, good retention,
decent amount of lacing. S: Cranberry, molasses,
very much like a Belgian Dubbel, but slightly less
fruity. T: Espresso, cocoa bean, creamy diacetyl,
molasses, slight cranberry, slight bitterness which
becomes more pronounced as the beet warms.
Did a very good job of hiding the booze. M: Light
body for the high abv, very smooth, creamy
texture. O: A complex, balanced interpretation of
an Imperial stout, a bit of a stout/dubbel mash up.

Its flip top produced a stomp after releasing it. Deep black color with a thick three fingers head with good retention and leaving lots of laces.
Right after opening it a cocoa smell started to swirl in the air with notes of coffee, nuts and plums.
Bold and nice flavor with notes of licorice, mild spices, some tangy citrusy, herbal hops, a bit of charred wood, figs, subtle lactic, walnut and red fruits. Dry and bitter aftertaste, reasonably clean.
Medium body with good carbonation with tiny bubbles. Alcohol of 9% abv is surprisingly well hidden.
Outstanding imperial stout, tasty but also elegant. Perfect sweetness level and balance with good complexity. Don’t expect a blunt American Imperial Stout.

3rd Feb 2014: bottle in Cambrinus, Brugge. This is one of the most reviewed Belgian beers I hadn't tried, so decided to rectify the fact by having one.

Black to very dark brown: good foam cap of tanned bubbles, looks like a Stout, what a surprise.

Chocolate and ground coffee esters hit the nose as you pour the beer, some dark fruit notes as well.

Taste carries on with the aromas now turning into flavours, dark chocolate, coffee, those dark fruits and now an alcoholic trace and a mild bitterness towards the end of each sip.

Almost creamy feel to the brew body wise.

Classic stout in all aspects and very drinkable.
