Comes in a cute and tiny 11.2 oz swing-top bottle, thanks to Daniel of The Moan & Dove for the sample.

Appearance: Pours a think fluffy tan head ... nice retention. The liquid easily renders a stout black colour.

Smell: Major licorice. Fruity, ester and some solvent alcohols in the nose as well as some undertones of dark roasted malt.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Sturdy medium to full body with a rich complex maltiness of dark and toasted malts. On the sweet side with light earthy mineral and nutty flavours. Hints of roasted coffee and dark bread come to mind. Prune like fruitiness, alcohol is a little bit solvent with a broad range of esters to boot. Hop bitterness evens the brew and stays on the sidelines though.

Notes: The alcohol lands it as an Imperial Stout, perhaps not as thick as others but this may have been closer to what an Imperial Stout could have been. An amazing brew to say the least.

Presentation: Swing-top bottle at 't Brugs Beertje, Brugs, Belgium.

Appearance: Really dark brown, close to opaque with a creamy tan head.

Smell: An interesting floral hop aroma. Never experienced it before.

Taste: This brew is very stout like, but with a big kick. Fruity and malty with burnt notes and some raisin flavours to round things off. It's also quite bitter which, again, is stressed as being very unusual. The hop flavour is unlike any other that I have tasted. There's some semi-astringent notes and loads of esters too. Alcohol is like vapor in your mouth -- very dominant.

Notes: Nothing to comapre it by, however it is very European in charater. Sheer bliss.

3rd Feb 2014: bottle in Cambrinus, Brugge. This is one of the most reviewed Belgian beers I hadn't tried, so decided to rectify the fact by having one.

Black to very dark brown: good foam cap of tanned bubbles, looks like a Stout, what a surprise.

Chocolate and ground coffee esters hit the nose as you pour the beer, some dark fruit notes as well.

Taste carries on with the aromas now turning into flavours, dark chocolate, coffee, those dark fruits and now an alcoholic trace and a mild bitterness towards the end of each sip.

Almost creamy feel to the brew body wise.

Classic stout in all aspects and very drinkable.

Poured from 330mL swing-top bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: extremely dark, ruddy brown with some very dim highlights when held up to the light. No haze is apparent, and the head is two thick fingers of frothy tan foam which leave a nice chunky lace. Quite good.

Smell: sweet, roasty grains with a bit of chocolate (note: this is a nice roasty without an ashy, acrid bitterness). Indeed, it reminds me of the aroma of uncrushed chocolate malt. There's a lightly floral element which I'd call "Belgian-y", but overall this is a pretty decent shot at an RIS -- just with a little Belgian twist.

Taste: quite a lot like the aroma, although with a little bit of an acidic roastiness; frankly, this adds a little bit of bite to the flavor that the aroma lacked. There's a very slightly sour and astringent finish; an interesting twist to the RIS theme (although, admittedly, not a taste that's for everyone).

Mouthfeel: body is pretty light for an imperial stout and carbonation and creaminess are relatively low, especially for the style. Not insipid or anything -- just OK.

Overall: disappointing mouthfeel notwithstanding, this is a very tasty and drinkable stout.

A: pours a nice dark brown, thin in body, yet enticing.

S: Smells nice, maybe sweet, but i smell something different,

T: to the lips, not bad, but once it hit the back of my tongue, just awful, the licorice/anise is SO overpowering. I like it in sambuca, so ita not that i don't like licorice.

M: The dry mouthfeel and taste reminds me of some flavored skoal i tried in high school... Never again... NOT a stout in my opinion.

O: at 7.99 for this i am beyond apalled, it has nothing besides a nice color... Please if you want a stout go american double or imperial, avoid this
