My guess is that this a bottle from 1998 or 1999 -- old label, dirty bottle (per the old days), but the cork is perfect.

Either way, this pours a minorly hazed golden-copper hue with a rush of white bubbles that quickly subside. The side of the gueuze glass lacks traces of lace, but who cares?

Nose is superbly funked up. Musty, barnyardy brett notes persist with a distinct lemoniness that is indicative of a Hanssens Gueuze. Damp wood notes, too.

The traditional gueuze flavors are incredibly well-integrated here. A cutting, lemony citrus flavor dominates with wood and rhubarb hanging in the background along with a bit of apple fruitiness. Sour, acidic and biting.

Medium-bodied with a wonderfully carbonated mouthfeel, even at this stage in its life. Remarkable.

To say this beer is drinkable would be an understatement. Refreshing in its citrus and acidic qualities, this is a great example of what a good bottle of gueuze becomes after some deliberate ageing. Really great stuff.

(poured with casual attention by the bartender into a tulip - 2nd/final pour by yours truly)

A: clear, pale honey-amber in color with a surprisingly durable cap of dense, creamy-frothy white foam (first half of pour)... poured in the rest (having likely been stirred by initial pour) sans last 1/2" - noticeably opaque with crumbling foam structure

S: first, a hit of earthy, sort of wheat germ graininess at its core - the bright, vaguely floral, inner layer of citrus peel comes in a step or two behind, around the perimeters

T: shifting shades of blinding, tart, dry citrus from start to finish - smooth shock of bitterness... with sediment poured in, a nutty element emerges in the finish... quintessential, pinpoint gueuze elements throughout

M: bright, tart smack up front, followed by a brief fuzzy funk, finally popping off and softly scattering out quite dry... nothing residual except for a delicate bitter numbness

O: fantastic gueuze - just what I wanted - just what I dream of (for the most part)

A- pours a hazy golden orange color with a fizzy off-white head that eventually reduces, leaving just a bit floating on top

S- lemon juice mixes with dried hay and barnyard funk aromas, fruity notes of peach and pear, musty and earthy yeast

T- big shot of puckering sourness up front, eventually gives notes of lemon peel, pear and peach. Funky yeast adds a musty tone with notes of dried hay and woodsy flavors, fruity lingers

M- light body with moderate carbonation leads to a slick and foamy mouthfeel with a bone dry, picking finish

O- big puckering notes on the aroma and taste, very good overall

Undated bottle recently stocked by the local bottle shop. Pours a hazy golden-amber. No lacing.

Aroma is earthy funk and grass with bright lemon character and vinegar.

Taste is candied lemon up front (like a lemonhead) with some lemon rind and other fruits including apple and grape. There is a funky base of earth, grass and oak but not as much as the smell would suggest. There is also a slightly metallic aftertaste. Very sour - the Hanssens seems to contain a higher amount of acetic acid than Cantillon or 3F Gueuze. It has a very vinegary taste and sensation I can feel in the back of my throat. I felt the same way about the Hanssens Oude Kriek; however, the gueuze is more drinkable than the kriek. There is a cloying sweetness, which in combination with the vinegar and the moderate, prickly carbonation made for a beer that is less drinkable than I was hoping. I love gueuze and this is not a bad beer for your gueuze fix. However, both 3F and Cantillon are much better.

A big thanks to perthbelgianbeer for this one !

Drank from my Cantillon Geuze glass

A - Pours a cloudy Orange straw colour. Pure white head reduces to a thin film that retains well.

S - Very tart, lemon peel, grass and wet wood.

T - Very oaky flavour, preserved lemons come to mind. The tartness is quite intense and the finish long.

M - Medium body with fullish carbonation

O - A great Geuze and well worth a try

A - Bright opaque orange hay body. Fine pure white head settles into a thick halo. Ok retention and low lace.

S - Complex nose, tart and savory. Tart peach, tart lemon rind, bread crust, red grapes, dried grass, apple cider, thai basil, honey.

T - Bold and oaky. Firm assertive oak, preserved lemons, bready malt backdrop, bright herbal cilantro and lemon thyme, earthy dry wheat stalks.

M - Dry, medium body with a nice bright carbonation.

O - A fantastic gueuze; well blended and well balanced. A great example of the style.
