330mL bottle

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-sensitive.

APPEARANCE : Hazy straw yellow, some yeast deposit. Nice white head that goes way high in the glass but falls back down fast enough, leaving an above-average amount of lacing.

SMELL : First nose is acidic barnyard funk over a base of malts. Some herbs and spice. Second nose increases the malt presence, giving out yeasty note that remind me of an abbey tripel. Earthy, dusty notes as well. Third nose confirms the presence of abbey tripel resemblance, with some definite fruity banana notes. The hops are through and through, but extremely well integrated.

TASTE : Grassy hops, herbs, fresh cut grass. Some barnyard funk mixes up with the malts. Funny thing is, the nose blended the hops into the malts and left the barnyard funk appart. Now the taste splits the hops appart and blends the malts with the barnyard funk. There is even a slight barley sugar after taste that comes in, complementing nicely on the funk. Very pleasing.

MOUTHFEEL : Good carbonation, roundish feel with some sharpness from the acid barnyard funk and the grassy hops. Very well balanced.

OVERALL : Although I can easily understand why this beer is seen as a staple in the Saison style, it's not my favorite. Don't misunderstand me, I'd still have one of those as often as they come, but I've tasted some products, even within the Dupont brewery itself, that pleased me much more than this still very fine beer.

Nose: An intense, polished aroma with a moderate barnyard character. Citrusy, acetic, grainy and fruity.

Mouth: The mouth is rich and complex with a puckering bite to it. Profile closely follows the nose. Pleasantly hopped and only moderately carbonic.

Overall: Enjoyable, refreshing, complex, brisk and intense; This legend did not disappoint although it's a beer that does requires some patience to deconstruct and understand.

330ml bottle into a tulip.

Pours a hazy dark gold with a huge billowy three finger white head. Thick foam and lacing lasts throughout the drink. Very, very impressive.

Aroma is everything a Saison should be. Loads of spicy Belgian yeast along with some peach and white bread. Orange and coriander along with some floral notes. The spiciness just really pops from this beer.

The flavor is much along the same lines as the aroma. Tons of spice with touches of orange, coriander, and peach. Really nice bready notes from the malt throughout. More pepper towards the finish. Mouthfeel is very light and spritzy with just a hint of sweetness in the finish; very quaffable.

Overall, this is the textbook definition of what a Saison should be. Pretty much the defining beer for the style and one of my all time favorite beers.

Pored from a 375ml bottle into a Riedel Stemmed Tulip whilst watching the Soccer World Cup.
This is an awesome ale.
It poured a cloudy golden colour with a two finger head.
Initially it smelled herbaceous which I guess is a good thing for a farmhouse ale.
The first taste revealed the high yeast and almost 'strong ale' characteristics.
As the beer warmed in the glass it started to open up in complexity. I could detect citrus hints of grapefruit and honey on the mid pallet and some pepper on the back pallet.
The beer had a creamy mouth feel with a dry finish.
I can see why this beer in one of the bench mark saisons. I am glad I had the opportunity to drink it. If you like this style then you need to put it on your must drink list.

This was good. Dry and herbal and somewhat spicy. Straw colored, visible floaters, slightly hazy. White head with persistent lace. Hops were a nice backdrop to some fruitiness and malt. Very clean and crisp. Somewhat of an apple cider crispness in the taste and slight apple in the nose. Pretty drinkable, alcohol pretty well hidden. Smooth mouthfeel. Overall this was good and interesting.
