Bottled February 2013
Poured into a Duvel glass.

Appearance: (4.5)
Pours a hazy, pale gold with a voluminous, 3 fingers tall pure white head. The head is tightly bubbled and has outstanding retention. The head leaves plenty of splotchy lacing behind as it slowly recedes.

Aroma: (4)
Initially, you're struck buy a slightly skunky mustiness(thanks to the green glass that this classic Saison is bottled in), but soon some fresh cut grass and spicy orange rinds from the hops greet your nostrils. Underneath these refreshing hop aromatics are some fruity yeast phenols; mostly green pear, banana and clove. As the beer warms, a soft, sweetly bready malt backbone becomes apparent.

Taste: (3.75)
Spicy, orange forward hops spring on to your palate immediately, quickly followed by some additionally spice oriented yeast character; clove, banana and light pear. Just as the beer comes to grinding halt with it's dry finish, your palate is covered with a light coating of clean cracker like malt. The bone dry, bitter finish leaves long lingering notes of spicy clove, banana, pear and clean bready maltiness on your tongue. Despite the dry finish, the beer does leave your mouth a tad watery.

Mouthfeel: (3.75)
Light bodied with high carbonation.

Overall: (3.75)
A veritable classic. Saison Dupont is a great example of a saison; It is crisp, refreshing with a lively, spicy yeast character but overall, I feel that I have had much better saisons. Dupont definitely fires on all cylinders, but like the flavor profile drops out before it really hits it peak on your palate. I think Vietnamese and Thai food would pair beautifully with this beer. Highly recommended, if not just for a solid baseline to compare modern renditions of a Saison to.

330ml bottle into a tulip.

Pours a hazy dark gold with a huge billowy three finger white head. Thick foam and lacing lasts throughout the drink. Very, very impressive.

Aroma is everything a Saison should be. Loads of spicy Belgian yeast along with some peach and white bread. Orange and coriander along with some floral notes. The spiciness just really pops from this beer.

The flavor is much along the same lines as the aroma. Tons of spice with touches of orange, coriander, and peach. Really nice bready notes from the malt throughout. More pepper towards the finish. Mouthfeel is very light and spritzy with just a hint of sweetness in the finish; very quaffable.

Overall, this is the textbook definition of what a Saison should be. Pretty much the defining beer for the style and one of my all time favorite beers.

Pored from a 375ml bottle into a Riedel Stemmed Tulip whilst watching the Soccer World Cup.
This is an awesome ale.
It poured a cloudy golden colour with a two finger head.
Initially it smelled herbaceous which I guess is a good thing for a farmhouse ale.
The first taste revealed the high yeast and almost 'strong ale' characteristics.
As the beer warmed in the glass it started to open up in complexity. I could detect citrus hints of grapefruit and honey on the mid pallet and some pepper on the back pallet.
The beer had a creamy mouth feel with a dry finish.
I can see why this beer in one of the bench mark saisons. I am glad I had the opportunity to drink it. If you like this style then you need to put it on your must drink list.

This was good. Dry and herbal and somewhat spicy. Straw colored, visible floaters, slightly hazy. White head with persistent lace. Hops were a nice backdrop to some fruitiness and malt. Very clean and crisp. Somewhat of an apple cider crispness in the taste and slight apple in the nose. Pretty drinkable, alcohol pretty well hidden. Smooth mouthfeel. Overall this was good and interesting.
