750ml green bottle was skunked. While most will hang this on the retailer, Specs in this case, there's absolutely no excuse for brewers to use green glass!!

Naturally, the appearance wasn't affected by the light exposure, but everything else was. Upon first opening, I could tell the beer was bad. There are hints that there was something good in there at one point, but not any more. I finished a half pint and dumped the rest.

Never again!!

Poured this bottle against my Spring Hopper Saison as comparison.

A: Golden straw hue with excellent clarity. Active carbonation bubbles lifting to the fluffy white head. Pours very carbonated. Homebrew shares golden straw hue but clarity is hazy with fairly active carbonation. Dupont wins on giant foam head.

S: Dank and skunky per wife's comments. A little yeast and grassy / earthy notes. Homebrew is more robust / complex. Homebrew has more apparent notes of cloves and yeast breadiness to aroma. *I have no sense of smell.

T: That dank / funky aroma carries over nicely to flavors. Citrus, herbal, grassy, slight breadiness, and complimented very well by light hop bitterness notes sprinkled throughout. Sessionable as alcohol is hidden very well. Similar to smell - Homebrew is slightly more robust / filling with a more "homebrew" flavor. Yeast / breadiness flavors are also more apparent. Dupont finishes much dryer, lighter, and slightly more sessionable.

O: Dupont is the benchmark of a historical and inspiring beer. Great for the seasoned beer nerd or rookie just wanting something drinkable. Sessionable, well balanced, and just enough complexity to make it interesting & fun. Dupont is a legend but I think Spring Hopper Saison held up well and gives inspiration for the future!

I guess its the season of Saison. I have seen them popping up by American brewers for the last month or so. My first intro to this style was a few years back and it was interesting. At first I thought it had gone bad. The funk man! I realized later that it is common for Belgian and Belgian style beers to have this earthy funkiness and this beer is no different.

Look: Color is golden with lots of carbonation, when I opened it the suds just kept pouring out like champagne.

Smell: There you have it, it catches you there at least it does me. One think I have learned to appreciate of Belgian beers is that herbal funky smell.

Taste: Very drinkable, smooth, and not too boozy for 6.5% although in the times in which we live that is not all that much alcohol. Fruity, funky, with some bitterness, but not very much at all. The bottle gives more of a history rather than what it contains, nevertheless the history lesson is interesting.

Overall impression is I do like this style and could drink more of it. I like the clove, tropical fruit, and funk mix. Its also very smooth which makes it a warmer weather beverage. This is supposed to be the quintessence of the style and I do like that about it. Some of the American breweries that are making the style are mucking it up with all these herbal additions, leave the yeast to do the job my friends and it should speak for itself. This is a good overall beer.
