330ml bottle poured into tulip 12/1/12

A hazy pale golden yellow with lots of tiny bubbles feeding a large bone white head that hangs around for ages slowly falling to an island leaving big chunks of random lace

S lots of spicy yeast with some cereal and peppery lemon, some white fleshed fruit and a little bubblegum, take that with a grain of salt because I'm smelling bubblegum in everything lately and I checked the beard for gum (no gum)

T flavors still solid but not as strong, not as fruity but perhaps more spice

M if the bubbles were any bigger this would be a foamy mess, but their pinpricks and make it feel creamy, yeasty aftertaste

O great stuff here and its easy too forget this is a strong beer because it goes down quick and has nothing in the way of booze

I want to say this would be a nice summer brew but I'd be broke and wasted by 3oclock. I can see myself drinking this again very soon

375ml bottle from Pick’s poured into a snifter. Pours a very cloudy dark gold with about 3 fingers of thick frothy white head. Aroma of light citrus fruits and some nice peppery spice. Taste is light bitter. Mostly citrus and spicy hops. Very dry, almost reminds me of champagne yeast. Light bodied with a thin texture. Fizzy carbonation and not much of a finish. Overall,not bad. Very drinkable but not really special. I have to disagree with Men’s Journal calling it "the best beer in the world". It would probably be great for drinking outside on a hot summer day, but not so much in the middle of a cold winter.

During our Saison tasting night we found this one the weakest of four. Still very good and very drinkable, but a tiny bit less special than the Ranke Dottignies, d'Erpe Mer or Moinette Biologique.

L: perfecto; bright golden colour, big lasting top;
S: we couldn't describe this smell easily, white grape/raisin (?), litte touch of banana, smoky.
T: quite straightforward, round, fruity (?), we're missing the bitterishness of the other beers;
M: okay, but lacking the real bitter/bitterish final accord.
O: very good beer; we'll drink it more often.

Poured from 11.2 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and cloudy golden yellow with some sediment and lots of rising bubbles. Huge six finger white head settles into a good finger of foam. Lots of lacing around the glass.

Smell: Big aroma of Belgian yeast with lots of cloves and citrus fruits. Hints of lemon, pear, banana, apple, and a little grapefruit. Also a hint of peppers. Pretty forward with the fruits. Smells fairly sweet.

Taste: Big taste of citrus fruits with a solid backbone of spicy Belgian yeast, cloves, and pepper. Notes of banana, apple, pear, lemon, mango, and grapefruit. Fruits are rich and start out kind of sweet and tart but start to dry out towards the finish. Spices blend in well. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a carbonation on the higher side. Very fruity and spicy. Starts sweet and finishes moderately dry.

Overall: A very solid Saison. Pretty fruity but there is a good balance between the sweetness and dryness.

750 ml/25.4 fl. oz.

A - Hazy golden-yellow with a huge white head. Bubbles up quickly and fades into thick piles of foam. Slight head retention but no lacing at all. Without a careful, delicate pour the head builds very quickly and very tall.

S - Light, refreshing fruits. Dry citrus comes to mind, especially lemon. Of course the funky, farmhouse, Belgian nose is pervasive.

T - Awesome. Refreshing, crisp fruit. Hay, yeast, and other barn-like flavors. Earthy. Hard to describe but very enjoyable.

M - Ample carbonation provides a clean, crisp bite. Becomes funkier and drier as the beer warms. I'd have to say, a much more refreshing and overall enjoyable beer when it's at a cooler temperature. As it nears room temperature I guess it's better for us beer enthusiasts who want to search for different layers in the nose and taste.

As a relative "novice" to funky and sour Belgian ales, this was a great introduction. I've had several American versions of Saison's and nothing comes close to this. But I guess that's the point. They all give their own interpretation of the original Belgian Farmhouse ales that are just fantastic. I cannot wait to delve deeper into this style of beer, especially the Belgian versions.
