Brasserie Dupont Tourpes Foret Belgium Saison

A- 2inch thick head, lovely delicate lace as the head recedes. Hazy, yellow and light amber in color.

S- Light malt on the nose, along with tell-tale banana esters.

T- Interesting. Very complex. Layer and after layer in this beer. I was told this is considered “the best beer in the world.” Now I’ve been tasting beer for years, but maybe I’m still not ready for it. It has the malt and bready yeast, plus the banana from the nose. But it also has the layers of coriander and vanilla, plus hints of cinnamon and clove on the finish. In fact, the finish lingers for quite a while, but it’s almost too spiced for me. I want to say bitter, but bitter isn’t the word. Being allergic to cinnamon, I personally did not enjoy this beer because it made my tongue tingle the same way the spice does. Perhaps one day…. I can see why people like it: it truly is well made, and the layers are fun to dig through. It’s a surprise, which in a world of boring beer is refreshing. But for me personally it’s a no go.

Sampled over my vacation last week. Reviewed from notes.

A- Golden yellow bodied ale poured into a wine glass with a foamy white head. The cap is several fingers high and has very good retention, reminds me of the great looking Belgian brews. Tons of thick lacing.

S- Mostly just a blast of clean and pure DuPont yeast strain. A great peppery and floral spicy feel and grassy spicy hops. Reminds me of the original quite a bit. Skunky hint but it goes good in this beer to be honest.

T- Damn clean for 7.5% Saison. A great combo of spicy, floral and citrus yeast flavors, just a hint of the latter. Coriander, peppercorn and some grassy/straw hop feel. Some of the spiciness must be from the hops as well.

MF- Foamy, highly carbonated light body with a very dry feel overall, super attenuation it seems. The dryness accentuates the spicy, grassy flavors for me and a decent bitterness results from this in the finish.

Reminds me of the original a lot with an extremely flavorful, yet clean Saison yeast feel, the classic strain. Love the spicy and floral/grassy interplay.

From a 750 ml bottle (2012 stamped on the cork) into a tulip.

A-The bottle opens with a healthy pop, but (fortunately) no gushing. A normal pour produces a healthy, three-finger head of off-white foam that drops pretty quickly into a thick, one-finger cap. Minimal lacing. The brew is light golden in color and mostly clear.

S-I detect the aroma of grassy, sharp hops at first. A few more sniffs reveal some honey and a powdery, musty scent. Mostly dry with a bit of skunky note.

T-The taste is also sharp, grassy, and lightly bitter. The honey is still there, but this is a pretty dry and powdery brew. The skunkiness is also still there, but aside from that grassy, skunky note, there is not much happening.

M-The feel is light to medium body with assertive, chunky carbonation.

O-This brew is a pretty mixed bag. It is OK to look at and the feel is pretty close to style, but the smell and taste are underwhelming. I keep getting skunky notes, and while the bottle I consumed might have been light-struck, I couldn't help but think that the flavor profile was intentional. Anyway, if you are a fan of ultra-grassy, ultra-sharp, slightly skunky saisons, this might be worth your time.

Bottle purchased from Whole Foods Soma in San Francisco.

Pours a dull yellow colour, extremely hazed with decent weight and fine carbonation to the body. Head is a solid meringue of white, with some lemon tinged colouring to it. Overall, it looks very solid.

Earthy, aromatic characters on the nose. A touch of sulphur, some mushroom, along with sharped characters of sawn wood and resin. It's very pleasant.

Light, earthy entry again: mushroom, soil, but clean and brusque. Smooth mid-palate, with a clean, velvety character through the centre and some estery notes from the yeast. Finish is extremely smooth and supple.

Feel is amazing. Soft, smooth and light. Delicate but structural. Lovely.

Overall, this is a really gorgeous beer. Smooth, lovely and amazingly drinkable. It's velvety, it's caressing, it's calming. Wonderful stuff.

750ml bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a hazy golden color with two fingers of fluffy white head. Great retention and good lacing.

S: Typical funky Dupont yeast aromas here. Lots of lemon zest, clove, and cardamom. Mild fruity sweetness behind that to balance.

T: Similar to the aroma, but funkier. I get a musty flavor with peppercorn, lemon zest, and cardamom. Extremely well balanced.

M: Medium to light mouthfeel with high carbonation, appropriate for the style.

O: A great Saison - a balanced, tasty, and intense flavor and aroma. I can see why people want to use this yeast for their Saisons. I much prefer the dryness I get here to the sweeter American versions.

Pours a dull light wood color, right around pine. It's almost the exact color of my bookcase. Cloudy, opaque. Big white head. Lots of lacing. Clumpy lines of bubbles stick to the walls of the glass. Very good retention. At least a centimeter of foam remains after quite awhile.

The aroma has an excellent fresh grain character. Fairly sweet. It's a pleasant bready sweetness. There's a touch of band-aid and a dry yeasty note. Fresh bread. Some light fruitiness, apricots and lemons. Just a tiny sour twinge. A little simple compared to some saisons, but easy to like.

The taste is drier and ups that yeasty tartness some. It starts with some of that fresh barley sweetness and apricot frutiness, but it quickly dries out and adds in lemon tartness and a nice dose of spice. Peppercorns. Again, a bit of that medicinal flavor that I don't love. The finish is quite dry and a bit dusty. Lots of yeasty flavor with lemon peel and pepper.

Mouthfeel is effervescent. The finish leaves a very dry feel, almost woody.

A very nice saison, though I don't like it as much as the flagship Dupont. It just seems a bit simpler. No big complaints, and it might just be a case of being so used to Saison Dupont that's it's hard to avoid comparison bias completely.

Poured from a corked 375 ml green bottle into a Pilsner (it's all I had at the time while camping in the wilds of FL). 

Appearance: Poured a cloudy golden color. Big 2-finger, slightly off-white head that stays and actually keeps growing as it's fed by a very active fine effervescence. 

Aroma: Not much. But a slight bit of Belgian spice was detected. Maybe a hint of skunkiness.

Taste: Robust, sturdy maltiness with some Belgian sourness and spice. Some breadiness and caramel. The hops are forward in the form of a flowery presence and linger somewhat. (No skunkiness was detected in the taste.)

Mouthfeel: A medium-fine carbonation. Medium body. 

Overall: A nice, very classy beer. I'm a sucker for anything that's "farmhouse"! I prefer a little more funk and spice and less hop forwardness in a Belgian. This seems to be toward the "champagne" end of the Saison spectrum just as is their Saison Dupont. Foret is, however, a bit more robust than the Dupont, and for that reason, I'd get Foret again.

C&C bottle opened with a nice pop. The pour is lively with more than half a glass of head which disappears quickly and leaves heavy lacing. The nose is funky! Plenty of sulfuric/skunky notes along with heavy cereal grains and a light lemony hops. The taste fruity up front with lemon, sugar, and grain. This is followed by a mellow tartness that provides a bit of a bite. Behind the bite is more evidence of the sulfur notes which leaves an off putting flavor on the palate. Mouthfeel is high with carbonation and moderate in the body department. Overall, this Saison has funk, but the funk is not in the form that I can enjoy. This is one that I will avoid in the future.

cork says 2012 with a 9 below it, not sure what the 9 means. The month maybe? Either way relatively fresh. Hazy faded gold with a billowing craggy and sticky white head. Sweet melon fruits covered in honey dew, yeast, faint banana and bubble gum notes on the nose.

Soft medium body with brisk but fading carbonation. Sweet fruitness followed by soft honey and herbal flavors and a nice malty sweetness. There is a significant hop herbal hop snap that comes along on the back end of the tongue with a bit of alcohol and yeast bite that cuts the sweetness so briskly for a smooth and refreshing finish. A simple beer but with extraordinary flavors that go well together and flavors that come from both sweet malts, yeast, and hops. A lot of stuff working very well together. Super dry finish, very nice.

From corked bottle...poured into smaller duvel chalice.
Pours a gold color with significant head with lace.
Aroma of horseblanket, funky melon rind, slight sweet malt, sourdough bread and light Italian herbs.
Big carbonation and mouthfeel.
Flavors of funky tropical melon rind, slight black pepper, amber malts, and field flower flavors, however you define them! When you get into the farm artisan styles of brew the relative quality of flavors and enjoyment varies...we each have our own expectations, desires and tolerance. This is a wonderful brew, and fresh from the brewery is lovely, but shipped here to Colorado it also is wonderful. Very different from the regular Saison Dupont and more complex...a challenging but lovely farmhouse type brew.

It pours a very hazy orange. The off white head is very thick with excellent retention and it leaves gorgeous lacing down the sides of the glass. It smells yeasty and musty. green apple and delicate hints of some tropical fruit as well. The taste is lighter than expected, and a little on the sweet side. The yeast is detectable, but it is toned down. It's sweet up front with hints of candied fruits that eventually becomes slightly tart. Fresh, juicy apple with a slightly dissapointing yeast undertone appear mid-palate. The finish has an ever so slight herbal hoppy bitterness. It has a lighter mouthfeel and the carbanation is pleasantly gentle. If you haven't tried this already, pick up a bottle.

Pours hazy golden with huge off white head that dissipates and leave some lacing down the glass. Lots of yeast smell in this one, maybe a little funk. Taste is light with decent hops flavor. Mouthfeel is light due the the abundant carbonation. Overall I've had better, but this isn't the worst.

A: overly huge, off-white head...crystalline, sticky, rocky, sudsy...at a glance, still...slow degradation - poured sort of clear, at first...sediment took over, rendering the golden ale so cloudy

S: sugar-coated dried fruit (pineapple, apple) - totally of DuPont - saffron-spicy, floral phenolics

T: musty, multigrain cracker - flowery/leafy, dirty-earthy - the stale-ish malt seems old or muted or not of the highest quality - can't get past the "off-ness" - tart and bitter citrus peel aftertaste, with some graham cracker thrown in

F: nothing to criticize too harshly here - has that soft carbonation and body, light effervescence - finishes dry and almost clean...a little grit

O: well, while this IS one of the better organic brews I've had, the green bottle (always on the top shelf, directly underneath the overhead bright lights) has to effect something while the quality of the malts come into question - otherwise, this compares favorably to the Saison Dupont - this is worth picking up, especially if you're the type who wants to support organic products

250ml bottle, dated 11/10/10. I bought it summer of 2012, so that gives me nothing.

A - Pale straw yellow, thin bubbly head, keeping with the style

S - Funk, wheat, booze

T - Less funk than in the taste.. Similar to an imperial wheat with some funk, and some bitterness. But with a thinner body.

M - Medium thin feel with a little too much carbonation. It's overwhelming the taste.

O - Pretty good! I think I'm getting more into saisons.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. Cork says 2010.

A- Pours a hazy golden color with a full inch of white head that retains quite well, taking its time to reduce to an 1/8 inch head. Fluffy non-resilient lacing.

S- Lemony aroma that's slightly effervescent and has notes of hay and barnyard. A bit skunky but that's to be expected considering how long it's been sitting in green glass.

T- Has a typical saison flavor but is toned down in the yeast department. More of an alcohol-tinged sweetness on display. Somewhat glassy flavor and a tad bitter. Also some spice in the aftertaste.

M- Very crisp and tight. Bursting with high carbonation and a light body.

O- Very good but not the best I've had from Dupont. I feel like the alcohol is too noticeable.

First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

Slightly cloudy, orange-yellow pour, with a fluffy white head that retained well and coated the glass with lacing. Flowers and lots of wet funk in the nose, pale malts, Belgian yeast. The taste wasn't nearly as funky as the aroma led me to believe it would be, floral, grassy, light toasted bread, sweet with honey and pale malts, notes of citrus and light spice. While the nose was a bit heavy on the funk, this beer was pretty smooth, light-medium in body, and quite drinkable overall. I haven't been impressed by many (if any) Dupont beers, but this one was not bad.

Cloudy orange colour with a very large white head. Head fades at a steady pace, leaving lots of lace.

Nose contains yeast, some white pepper and some fruit- primarily banana.

Taste is very nice. Contains a mix of yeast with a slight hint of funk, fruit (peach, pear, banana) and some light spice flavours (a bit of clove, some pepper). A bit of grass. Yum.

Medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Very smooth and soft.

Overall, quite nice. Another good beer from this brewery.

$6.50 for a 33cL bottle. Almost fully-emptied into a Corsendonk tulip in one pour.

Pours a murky goldenrod blonde with a great big fluffy white head that has the consistency of loosely-beaten egg whites. Swatchy lacing.

Yeasty and peppery nose with standout clove and some light fruity sweetness coming from notes of pear and whitehouse cherry. Not as spicy as I'd expect, but subtle peppery spices are apparent. Has a golden ale character to it. Aged hops seem to want to break through, although this aroma is barely evident.

Some phenols and medicinal flavors are noted, and are somewhat disruptive. But, pear and banana and orange are just a few of the fruit flavors peering out over a very dominating farmhouse-style Belgian yeast. Lots of clove and mixed nuts with a hint of black pepper. A soft and mellowed flavor yields to a rosewater-like alcohol that carries the finish with a lump of light warmth. Some eucalyptus or cough medicine flavors in here, too. Foret isn't knocking me off my stool, but it's still pretty tasty.

Great mouthfeel includes the creamy-smooth texture of the body, a little bit of viscosity (which doesn't harm this particular saison), some crumpling carbonation that likes to spread the beer out in the mouth without tickling it, and a round and even swallow (complete with 7.5% worth of alcohol by volume).

Not too shabby, but I don't need my Saison Dupont to be Certified Organic. I still prefer the original to this take.

A - Cloudy golden/orange, thin white head has little retention and little lacing.

S/T - Slight yeast funk up front, honey sweetness mid palate, finishing with a nice herbal hop bite. Some pine and lemon citrus as well.

M - Light/medium body, crisp carbonation and dry finish.

O - Taste and aroma seem subdued. I expected a little better from Dupont

750 ml bottle poured into a SN tulip.

A: Huge carbonation and white fluffy white head. Golden color with slight haze but the bottle was shaken up a bit prior to opening.

S: Smells slightly floral, earthy and smooth fruitiness. Almost like a Fantome at a distance. Once you get your nose in the glass its more phenolic with slight banana and very grassy, almost lemon grass.

T: Very refreshing, balanced with moderate spice and yeast character. Does not taste like a 7.5 abv brew, way too drinkable.

M: Dry and great lingering bitterness. High carbonation and slight alcohol warmth but definitely refreshing and drinkable.

O: A great beer but I do prefer the standard saison by Dupont. This has a more interesting aroma from a distance but very similar to its more common brother, the standard saison. I would still recommend trying this or making it your go to replacement for the standard saison when not available.

Champagne style bottle poured into a Duvel glass.

Pours pale pale yellow, almost white, with thick white foam. Grips the side. Citrussy smell an strong. Chalky. Taste is a thin wit, lots of citrus, very strong carbonation. Smooth, flavorful, and a mellow hop finish. Solid.

Expected this to be a wit not a Saison.

Appearence: Poured from a 750 into a frosted mug (I know, but make due with what you have) with a thick off white 4 fingers of head.

Smell: The aroma is first and foremost a beautiful yeast, followed smoothly by orange zest, spice and coriander.

Taste: a tangy yeast forefront followed by citrus, a hint floral, and just the right sourness at the end.

Mouthfeel: medium body, perhaps a hint heavy, that is still strikingly crisp thanks to great carbonation that keeps this beer lively throughout. (I actually had to make 4 pours to have more than %60 of my mug beer instead of head)

Overall: this is, quite possibly, exactly what I am looking for in a saison. I would not hesitate to build a meal paired specifically for enjoying this saison to its fullest.

On-tap, served in a tulip

The body sits a hazy pale yellow color with a thick two finger paper white cap. The cap is thick and recedes slowly. Huge sip marks line the inside of the glass.

Notes of earth, pepper, and grass hit me off the bat. Some underlying apple, pear, and dry straw. Very subtle, the grassy earthy notes are the most prominent.

Soft earthy notes and pepper throughout. An herbal/medicinal flavor through the middle with a light fruitiness in the finish before a drying rush. The finish is clean and crisp. This guy nails the style extremely well. Nothing overpowers, everything plays nice together. Well-balanced and refreshing.

Light bodied with high carbonation. Smooth feel, a tad creamy before a touch of prickly funk breaks through here and there.

Spot on saison. Just tremendously balanced in all facets.

Thick foamy lacing clings to the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big orange zest, lemon zest, pepper, coriander, earth, clove, pear, wheat, grass, hay, bread, and yeast spiciness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity and balance. Taste of big lemon, orange zest, pepper, clove, pear, wheat, bread, grass, hay, coriander, earth, herbal, floral, and big yeast spiciness. Light wheat tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange zest, wheat, pepper, clove, coriander, bread, earth, grass, and yeast spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic flavor complexity and balance; very crisp and fairly dry finish; no cloying flavors at all. Great malt flavor to spiciness balance as well. High carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy, chalky, and fairly prickly and crisp mouthfeel that is excellent. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an absolutely world class saision. Insane balance and complexity of flavors; extremely crisp and smooth to sip on. I am going to have to revisit the normal Saision Dupont soon to compare; this is apparently the organically brewed version of that. WOW.

The beer pours a beautiful straw yellow with a little gold touching its edges. The head pours big, smooth and frothy, and it lasts, leaving short sticky walls of fat lacing on the sides. The beer smells big and funky, practically skunked, but very strongly of hay and barnyard funk. Lemon bread sits nicely below the funk, giving it an almost biscuity scent. The esters seem citrusy as well, but overall this smell is all about the barnyard funk. On the taste, the beer is wonderfully simple in its complexity… if that makes sense. The beer starts with a nice light fruit flavor that moves into the wonderful barnyard funk mixed with some light biscuit, before opening up into some lovely hay and citrus fruits with lemon, orange peel, and slight pineapple playing on the tongue with a nice light pepper. Mouthfeel is fiercely prickly and effervescent, but that works with this beer and helps to prepare the tongue for the thick lasting ooze on the tip while the back of the throat dries out and begs for more. Overall this is a fantastic example of a to-the-tee saison. It has all the hall marks of the style from the citrus, to the pepper, to the distinguished barnyard funk. This is worth a try for any saison lover out there, and for any beer lovers looking for a classic example of the saison.
