There is something beautifully belgian going on with the yeastiness.

330 ml bottle poured into a tulip. Pitch black stout, no colored tint that I can discern, with five towering fingers of sudsy tan head that recalls sponge toffee with much bigger bubbles.

Aroma recalls dark chocolate and carob with hints of almonds and sour red berries. A little wood char and smoke. Smells like a classic English stout, really, albeit one on the dry side. Palate is even more dry, ashy, and roasted. There is a characteristically Belgian spicy fruitiness that recalls a saison (tart pears mostly, with a clove-like vapor trail?), an element that probably remains buried beneath the burnt coffee-like roasted malts unless one is reasonably attentive. For some reason I am more than OK with this seeming clash between sour orchard fruit and dark roast/ashtray... Truly. It shouldn't work but right now it does.

People may not appreciate the relatively thin body and overall ultra-dry vibe this brew conveys. Quite fizzy for a stout, to boot. Admittedly, I'd prefer a thicker mouthfeel but I think the intent here is to avoid a straight up replication of something one would find in an English pub (not to mention the fact that "non Imperial" stouts are not really supposed to be syrupy in nature). The well-attenuated character fits the aforementioned Belgian fruit/spice character. There is still a certain smooth creaminess. Finish is a pleasing balance of ashy roast and dry fruity notes.

Maybe I am under the influence of some odd spell cast when I opened the bottle, but I feel that this is an underrated brew. "Belgian stout" should perhaps be a separate style designation, at least for splitters such as myself. Maybe this could use a few rougher edges to add complexity and character? In any event, might be worth a second look if you hated it on the first pass.

I found this a pleasant example of a stout. It has a nice mouth feel with a pleasant roasted character. Its straight ahead simple to enjoy stout. Not the best but a solid entry none the less.

A - Dark brown pour and changes to black when it accumulates in the glass, nice three fingered
in the beginning but dies down to a soapy, tan colored lacing ring.

S - Dark chocolate aroma with a hint of cocoa.

T - Some dark chocolate, dark fruit, a small amount of smokiness, and light roasted cocoa.

M - Light bodied and very thin for a stout, medium carbonation on the tongue.

O - Too thin for a stout, needs to be more robust in both body and flavor -= not much going.

Black color with red highlights and a thick caramel head with a short retention but keeping a constant plate.
Nice aroma with lots of licorice, roasted malts, dark fruits, some coffee and cocoa just after some time.
Flavor with very natural coffee notes, spices, dark fruits, caramels, ashes, earth, tobacco and pears. Cocoa appears after warming up. Very dry aftertaste with a long roasted note. Slightly tart with a distant balsamic vinegar.
Light to medium body with good carbonation, slightly effervescent.
Quite unique stout with a good balance between roasted- ashy, tart, fruity and spicy notes. In my opinion this is underestimated once flavors are not the usual easy ones for Stout. Interesting that it sure has Dupont genes there.

Appearance: The beer pours like a Belgian, with a huge, rocky head rather than the traditional English bubble show; the translucent brown color is much lighter than expected; shards of lacing are left behind

Smell: Burnt and ashy, with just a hint of chocolate and a vague tartness

Taste: Starts out with a powdered chocolate flavor with tart dark fruit building in the middle; quite phenolic, after the swallow with a bit of a skunky flavor

Mouthfeel: Belgian stout mouthfeel, with a medium body and high carbonation

Overall: Rather disappointing for a Belgian stout and the green bottle doesn't help matters

Massively carbonated with a tightly knit khaki colored head. Dark brown in color and only a bit of light gets through. Brussels lacing. This beer is virtually odorless,but with a lot of effort I got a bit of dark malt. The flavor is a bit on the sweet dark malty side. Perhaps a bit of powdered cocoa in the mix. The mouth is creamy and dry.

Appearance: Black. Tan head with a little staying power and a good amount of lacing.

Smell: Chocolate, Caramel, hints of berry jam.

Taste: Roasted up front. Hints of jam in the middle. Nutty finish.

Mouthfeel. Thin. Carbonated.

Overall. A nice stout. Middle of the road bold and mellowed significantly as it sat in the glass.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/27/2013. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 2-3 finger fairly dense and fluffy tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, pear, apple, clove, pepper, herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/spicy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, coffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, pear, apple, clove, pepper, herbal, and roast/yeast earthiness. Slight amount of earthy roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roast, coffee, toast, dark bread, raisin, pear, apple, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; with a good malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly chalky/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a good Belgian stout. Good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/spicy yeast flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A unique and pleasantly enjoyable offering.

Appearance: pours pitch black with a big, light tan, quickly dropping head, leaving nice lacing.

Aroma: coffee and roasted malts with some fruit-like, fresh aroma in the back and perhaps some forest notes. Subtle, yet very pleasant.

Taste: a bit sour, malty. There's a lot of roastiness and hint of coffee. Mildly bitter. Basically a typical stout with nothing much going on.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, medium carbonation. Would be better with softer carbonation.

Overall: Highly drinkable, but I wouldn't drink more than one bottle. it's a typical stout. It could be more bitter and less carbonated. Good, but not great.

Pours very dark brown to black, one finger beige head, sticky.
Smells of dark roasted malts, caramel, coffee and forest nuts.
Surprisingly, there's a big tartness from beginning to end, vinegary, mixed with some lemon zest also, messing with the classic aromas, setting them in the back. Roasted dark malts, sure, with smokiness and mild caramel. Going to dark chocolate. Weak coffee (diluted), cocoa powder and a dry earthiness are classic to the stout recipe, but the weird sour cherries and low dark fruit (red grapes, plum) somehow don't fit. Spices are cinnamon, anise and hints of vanilla. Low hop presence, bitterness provided mostly by the roast.
Drinkable, sure, but too thin and crisp than expected.
Not really what i wanted, don't know for sure if it's "interesting" or just not well made.

330ml bottle. A refermented in the bottle stout. Awesome.

This beer pours a mostly clear (I think) very dark brownish cola hue, with slight caramel highlights, and a teeming tower of puffy, effervescent, and loosely foamy, tiny-bubbled beige head, which leaves some very Hawaiian Island-esque lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.

It smells of roasted biscuity caramel malt, a hefty dose of sharp, oily nuttiness, a subtle black fruitiness, a touch of bittersweet cocoa and coffee, some dry baker's yeast, and subdued earthy, leafy hops. The taste is much bigger on the dark chocolate and day-old coffee essences than initially led with, pushing the caramel sweetness down a peg or three, the dark fruitiness getting a mildly sour tang to it, the Belgian yeast reveling in their second life, and some musty, dusty, earthy hops bringing up the rear.

The carbonation is tight, and reserved in its bristling frothiness, the body a wavering medium weight, and none too smooth, as the bubbles and yeast have this sort of unholy pact to scour my tongue. It finishes off-dry, the toasty choco-cafe notes not ready to give up just yet, while the yeast and musty hops round things out.

An English stout, by way of the Wallonian countryside, this is. Perhaps there's a reason for that there English channel - the English have their stout, and the Belgians have their fruit and yeast, ne'er the two shall meet. But here they have, and the result is middling at best, and not something I'll be jumping to revisit.

A - Poured black with a thick two finger beige head. Good carbonation coming up and a spotty lacing with a finger of retention.

S - Roast, dark fruit. Mild.

T - Roast, dark fruit, tobacco.

M - Good carbonation, full creamy body, yeasty finish.

O/D - Not overly flavourful or complex. OK but nothing I'd reach for again.

I didn't know Dupont brewed a stout until I came across it at the LCBO the other day. If it's anywhere as good as their Saison, I'm in for a treat.

The body is a deep chestnut brown that is so close to black it might as well be. When held up to the light, the edges of the beer are the only thing that gives away its true colour. A finger's worth of cream coloured head is tightly knit and doesn't boast much staying power. No lace is left behind.

An enticing aroma of vanilla beans and sweet dark chocolate greets me first. Coffee grounds and a nutty earthiness lie just underneath. Fruity jam-like esters also make a subtle impression. There's no sign of any hop character but that's to be expected with the style.

The taste is very straightforward. Both the vanilla and dark chocolate dash across the tongue and their presence is short lived. A drying roasty and nutty character quickly takes over and continues into the finish. The dry, almost papery quality in the finish I equate with sorghum or oxidation. Whatever it may be, it's harsh and too pronounced for the delicate flavours of this stout.

Even for an English Stout, this is on the lighter end of the spectrum in terms of its feel. Watery is never a descriptor I like using, especially for stouts, but that's the first thing that comes to mind. Couple this with the off-putting dry finish and I'm left with an underwhelming beer.

Overall, a disappointing stout. I try not to set expectations for beers before trying them, but when they come from a reputable brewery such as Dupont, it's hard not too. The highlight for me was the nose. It was complex and flavourful. If only that were to have continued into the rest of the categories. The mouthfeel is what really threw me off with this beer. It's too thin and lacked balance. Their saison is on another level in comparison to this, and the former is what I'll stick to.

Monk's Stout has the appearance of a porter or dry stout, being pitch black with a quarter inch tan head. For the aroma, I picked up a lot of various dark fruit esters, and Belgian yeast. I found that the tast was very smoky, a bit 'roasted,' and tart. Once the beer sat for a little while, it began to give off some chocolately flavors too. Very light bodied and light in the mouth feel, this is something different. It did not quite taste like a Belgian or a Stout. Not sure if I would order this again other than to try and better understand or appreciate it.

A really big, but controlled, foam-up in the New Belgium snifter. It settles down to a tall pile of beige-tinted clouds. Very light bodied.

It does have a diluted coffee flavor, but it's quite pleasant. It's just slightly tart, and there's a distinct burnt undertone. Dark grains and barely ahint of sweet malt. The dry Belgian yeasty taste comes forward after some sipping.

Sourish and bitterish aftertaste is not the best reature. This is certainly a beer that doesn't fit easily into the catalogue, but it's very drinkable and refreshing. From the 750 ml bottle bought at Bine & Vine in San Diego.

A - Super dark with a fairly thick head of foam that drops quickly.

S - Nose is coffee and roasted malt. Bit of a metallic tinge,

T - There's some coffee flavour and hmm burnt rubber? A bit acidic and kind of muted in flavour overall.

M - Medium body. Sharp carbonation.

O - It's OK, but not my favorite stout. Kind of drinkable but not terribly tasty.

330 mL bottle picked up at a London LCBO; best before August 2014. Loved the saison, so I figured this one looked interesting enough to be worth picking up - I don't drink a lot of stouts in the first place, let alone Belgian ones. Served slightly chilled.

Pours black as night into my pint glass, topped with two lofty fingers of puffy, silky, beige-coloured head. It retains beautifully, lasting nearly 10 or 15 minutes into the drink, leaving very little lacing as it slowly seeps away. Looks amazing, but the aroma is anything but - dark roasted malts, treacle sweetness, and Belgian yeast come through, with a slight hint of mocha and dark fruit. Enjoyable, but rather subdued, becoming only slightly more noticeable as the beer warms.

The flavour profile is quite similar, both in range and intensity, though to its credit it does improve as the beer approaches room temperature. Some dark, nutty roasted malt and treacle sweetness, black licorice and baker's chocolate notes underlie an oddly prominent plum-like tartness - not something I tend to look for in stouts, but I can dig it. The aftertaste is tart at first, but this gradually fades away into a pronounced dryness, leaving a charred, ashy taste on the palate. On the light side of medium-bodied, with very mild carbonation and a somewhat flat mouthfeel. There is no carbonation to scrub away the charry aftertaste, so it accumulates as I sip my way through the glass - for that reason alone, this small serving is probably enough for me.

Final Grade: 3.24, a serviceable C+. Brasserie Dupont's Monk's Stout is an odd beast. I could drink most of my favourite stouts all night, and there are few Belgian-style ales I would ever turn down a second helping of - but this fusion of the two leaves me feeling underwhelmed, and one glass will be more than enough for me. The taste is fine, but the burnt, ashy mouthfeel really hurts its drinkability. I don't regret getting this one, but I doubt I'll pick it up again, or recommend it to anyone looking for a traditional stout.

Monk's Stout looks rich enough to sustain an entire abbey. Only at certain angles into the light are dark russet-brown edges revealed (never any transparency though). Head-on the beer appears wrapped in an entirely black robe, its hood, however, tinted a beige-brown tone.

The first whiff is intrinsically pleasant: a mocha, creamy chocolate note that is light sweet, lightly roasty. It's not strong but has a definite coffee bean flavour, one that is surprisingly unencumbered by yeast or esters (as is customary with Belgian brews).

The first taste, however, proves to be a kind of "ah ha" moment - it's where the stout unravels and the more typical Belgian ale characteristics come to the fore. Gone is a good chunk of the coffee-and-cream, dark chocolate flavours and in their place arises a tart dark fruitiness, something like sour plums. It has a vague balsamic quality to it. Hints of anise spice too.

So rather than be "stout", Monk's Stout drinks with a sweet, dried (although curiously tart) dark fruitiness that is more typical of a Dubbel. Remnants of the smoke and roast do remain, however, more than enough to remind the drinker that this isn't another prosaic Belgian ale; much of the distinctive earthiness and spice of DuPont's saisons is present in this offering too.

Belgium isn't exactly known for its stouts. While enjoyable, Monk's Stout fails to make much headway in that department. Nevertheless, Brasserie Dupont could have done nothing for the rest of its existence but make Saisons and the world would still love them, so I respect the experimental efforts and will support any other ambitions this excellent producer comes up with.

Appearance: almost black with a touch of red glimmering like dried blood; fine, mocha head with good retention

Aroma: drifts from the glass strongly, more bitter and acidic than expected, almost like balsamic vinegar; chocolate most prevalent in the roast; some dark cherry

Taste & Mouthfeel: not your typical stout! very bitter and acidic roast (aroma was telling) and a little thin - like corner store coffee, and with about as much depth and length; things are going downhill fast, actually becomes more unpleasant and almost undrinkable - it's puckering, becoming sour - I'm done

Overall: first sip wasn't bad, but it rapidly fell apart with a surprisingly weak body and sour, vinegary flavour - I'm all for trying something different, but this just isn't right

Poured in to snifter.

A - Black with half a finger of light brown head. Carbonation appears very high (as expected given that this is a bottle conditioned beer).

S - Bittersweet chocolate, roast, dark caramel and some yeast esters.

T - Roast, chocolate, Belgian yeast notes and hints of coffee.

M - Medium body, moderate to high carbonation. Carbonation was a little heavy for my taste.

O - Decent enough but fairly average overall.

P: Almost pitch black body with a tan micro bubble head.

S: Sweet milk chocolate, molasses, fig pudding, burnt barley and fruit roll ups.

T/M: Chocolate, stale coffee, and sweet dark fruit jam. Oddly present tartness, cherry cola, burnt molasses, burnt barley and finishes dry with long lingering cigar smoke coverage. Body is more light and carbonated than expected.

O: Tartness is really throwing this off. The aroma is very nice and well blended. I could smell this for hours. For the price tag this is not something I would ever purchase again but I enjoyed the experience.

Beer is black, perhaps with some dark brown hints. Small tan head on top. Good retention.

Smell contains roast malt, coffee. A bit of a dark fruit scent, but not anything in particular.

Taste is very thin. Some roast malt, a bit of coffee. Relatively bitter. Again, a slight bit of dark fruit, almost grape in flavour. A bit astringent.

Quite light in body, moderately carbonated. A thin beer.

Overall, not what I would expect from Dupont. An OK stout, nothing exciting but quite drinkable.

Bottle from the Dupont LCBO feature, and the weakest though most unique offering.. Body looks like a nitro black. Faint roastiness, more molasses taste. A weaker stout for sure. So-so drinkability, and dare I say a little thin.A little bitter but not interesting.Watered down coffee substitute.

330ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $3

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size fizzy/frothy beige head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there isn't much lacing. The head lasted for 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There are also some smokey/burnt notes and a bit of a nuttiness. It ends with a chocolatey/watery aftertaste with a lingering roasted coffee bitterness.

Overall - Not really a stout.. Maybe more like a Schwarzbier. Anyways, I expected more from this brewer. Still decent, just needs more flavour and less of a watery feel.
