On tap at Bier:Thirty in Boise.

A- Golden straw color, little head with no lacing.

S- all Belgian esters and floral nose smells good, not very strong odor.

T- similar to the nose. Belgian yeast, cloves, banana, slight peppery flavor. Malt is fairly heavily represented, as expected with the lack of hops from the style.

M- syrupy, somewhat heavy bodied given the appearance. Carbonation is pretty strong as well.

O- good, unusual in a good way. I haven't had many Gruits, I'd try again, though not super often.

Poured from a 750mL caged-and-corked bottle into my Drie De Fonteinen tumbler.

Clear aureolin liquid with a fist of off-white soft peaks climbing the glass. Thick, clingy, soapy lacing. Superior retention.

Soft estery/yeasty aromatics with baked banana, vanilla, and a low but lasting floral element.

Sweet palate entry with a pleasing pure malt flavor. Very light bitter-tartness offsets the sugars, while that floral note returns in the finish. Barely discernible herbal notes, hard to believe there are a dozen unusual ingredients spicing things up as their contribution is so subtle.

Medium-bodied, zesty yet creamy, and strangely refreshing. Alcohol is well hidden.

Having not had many (any?) gruits until now, this is difficult for me to rate to style, but it is a well crafted ale, and strikes one as experimental yet conservative all at once. A good beer in the lead-up to Valentine's Day.

I like gruits in a historic sense. Were this simply labeled Saison Dupont 2, I’d probably find it much less interesting. Basically it tastes like Saison Dupont with the hops out and every other flower in. But by trying to resurrect an old style there is a wonderful sense of beer history and experimentalism.

What about the beer I guess? Well it pours a very hazy gold, and looks as refreshing as the bottle claims. A vigorous head rises and stays for a few moments.

Posca Rustica has a whole different body than expected though. The body is surprisingly heavy, with less (although still high) carbonation than expected. The alcohol is masked nearly entirely however, and lemon and light tart notes tingle on the tongue. A saison yeast strain has to be in effect here, as the pepper notes really define it on the cheeks. It’s a fun beer, but it’s a much less drinkable than I’d hoped.

A good beer in general, a great gruit, and not the best purchase while Saison Dupont still exists.

Had on-tap at Avenue Pub New Orleans. Served in a snifter.

A- Pours a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch white had that retains a bit before be Pliny a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a small patch of surface foam. Non-resilient lacing leaves a thin ring behind on the glass.

S- Sweet honey smell and a bit of booze. Has a fume similar to that of a white wine.

T- Huh. Tastes like a mead that's not very sweet, or a white wine that's too sweet. The spices used are very subtle and can't compete with the white wine notes. Smooth and easy to drink but pretty one-dimensional.

M- Thin and watery with medium-low carbonation and a light body.

O- I don't know why this has such a high score. Alba Scots Pine Ale and the Fritz Briem 13th Century are much tastier versions of the style.
