Pours a foggy copper-brown with a finger or two of khaki foam pending if it's the first or second pour from the bottle. Pour color turns to a murky brown with the final couple ounces poured into the glass. Head retention is great. Aroma is heavy underlying Belgian ale qualities - yeast esters, clove, and toasty, nutty, earthy malts. Spices hit later in the aroma, but add a little zest and nuance to the aromatics. Flavor profile is yeast ester, clove, and spices right at the forefront. It comes on heavy and then fades away, revealing malt qualities of toasty, nutty, caramely, and earthy. Nice balance between the two, developing a zesty Belgian ale quality with a unique personality. Background noise is filled by light herbal qualities. Mouth feel is medium-thick, and expansive on the palate via an effervescent texture. Overall, a quality, nuanced Belgian ale. Herbal qualities add the uniqueness here, but still maintain a pleasant sipping experience.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 750mL bottle.

Chill hazed gold with a tall white colored head.

Smells fruity and with lots of honeysuckle scent. Faint butterscotch scent. Fainter scent of grape.

Starts out neutral and slightly sour. Mild berry flavor. This is a little sweet but not overpowering. Tastes more than a little of pear cider.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall I like the Saison better.

Poured from 750ml bottle into glass. Bottle label is stamped 'L 14040B'.
Pale gold colored body, but slightly cloudy. Minor spotting of white head, and thin cap fed by carbonation bubbles. No lacing.
Aroma is very fragrant. Pear like fruit. Vinous white wine. Sweet citrus.
Taste introduces some spice, such as coriander. Sweet pear/citrus. Herbal, floral additions, and white wine. Light funk at the end.
Active, carbonated mouth feel.
Quite a delicate blend of aroma, taste, and mouth feel. Stands alone, but can be interpreted as a blend of light funk and light sweet. A reminder of an historical way to brew a malted beverage.

Proper glassware is a mug and that’s what I had it in. The appearance was a nice hazy golden orange to yellow color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about less than a minute. The lacing was somewhat spotty and somewhat clingy here and there. The smell was sweet herbal, light white wine (but nice). Light citrus fruit amplifies a silky sweet underlying malt. The taste was herbally sweet with a nice florally silky and somewhat light acceptable white wine balanced by citric fruits. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a nice sessionable quality about it. The carbonation was there - good. I have to say there’s a nice smooth sweet herbal quality rolling over my tongue. Overall, I like this one and would definitely come back to this.

Bottled May 28th 2015.

Pretty big foamer, 2 fingers with a slow and careful pour. Shrinks slowly and leaves a lot of lacing behind. The beer itself is clear, so far, gold colour.

Smells spicy with some cloves and Coriander, earthy, peculiar bitterness.

Coriander and clove to start. Bitterness is on the spicy side with an overall earthy character and it is yeasty. Not tart but close. It is 8% abv and I do get some warming but no sign in the taste.

Medium body with zesty carbonation that tickles my throat.

Saying that this is yummy wouldn't be out of order. It is a Dupont beer after all.

this is an under appreciated beer in general i think, and another classic from dupont that probably deserves more attention than it gets. for me this is like a strong wit meets a saison, i get a citrus peel bitter and sweet interplay going on in nose and taste, and i get a lot of texture and flavor out of the wheat malt. both are great features, and on the saison side, its equally robust. this yeast is just as good as i hoped it would be, a little funky but well short of tart, belgiany in the fruity sense, but also with a spice character than plays well with the spices added to the brew. the flavor here is nice and complex, and the bigger body really lets it unfold at its own pace. something floral and bitter, dandelion maybe, comes to mind up front, an odd place for bitterness but appropriate here, then i get a sweet golden raisin fruitiness, maybe from the yeast, that goes great with the wheat. slight oxidation creeps in here in the center, very green bottle belgian light skunk though, and its not out of place. white pepper, breakfast bread, coriander seed, green apple, and something bitter like tea, vegetal there at the end, but not appearing to be any hop i am familiar with. sudsy and big feeling, some residual sugar, has elements of a tripel there with the sweet and the yeast. of expert quality overall, as good as anything else these guys do, and worth paying for.

edit: need to raise a few scores to reflect how well this one ages, its as good as any of the saisons these guys do, and i just had a really old bottle, 2011 if i am interpreting the cork right, maybe not quite that old, hard to tell, but at least a few years older than what i reviewed it above, and its even drier, cleaner, and bubbly, with the sweetness almost gone, the herbal notes staying in tact, and the yeast just doing wonderful things over time. white wine and white pepper nuance now, epic carbonation. a fine send off beer to share with a close friend before we move. as good as the style gets at this level of maturity! what a beer! still a few of these around greater denver if you get lucky!

Something like crossover between saison and Leipziger Gose. Herbal, citrussy, bit salty. Nicely balanced. Refreshing. Feels like session beer inspite of 8 percent of alcohol.

Brasserie Dupont brew my all-time, indisputable (at least until another brewer bests them) favourite Saison - their eponymous Saison. So when I found this corked/caged 750ml bottle of Cervesia at Plonk I was at first intrigued “Do Dupont do anything apart from Saisons?” well apparently this one is a Gruit (before hops were mainstream beers were finished with herbs and spices - Gruit is the name for this mixture) with sweet woodruff (known as Galium Odoratum or wild baby’s breath) and bog myrtle along with a dozen other spices. I do like a good Gruit.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Fully cloudy, I may have stirred up the yeast somewhat, tangerine body with a 2 cm dense white head that soon reduces to a thin blanket of snow on top. Closer inspection reveals suspended yeast particles - I love those guys. 8/10.

S: Sharp sweet spices: Coriander along with cardamom especially, infused with a musty yeast, overripe pears and big floral note... hint of bubble gum coming through too, this is one hugely complex fragrance sitting in front of me. Notes of concentrated orange juice coming through too... damn! 10/10.

T: Sweet upfront, not sugar bomb overly but noticeable, then the spices hit and mid palate everything balances with a citric note... this is a fairly sublime balance. Flavours noted (I need a list): Orange peel, overripe pear, coriander, cardamom, clove, something else bitter and herbal, something coppery/earthy and musty yeast. Aftertaste brings back that orange concentrate noted in the aroma. Flawless taste? Pretty much. 10/10.

M: Medium bodied with creamy almost Weizen-like carbonation. Hard to find faults with this brew. 10/10.

D: Wow. It’s been a while since I’ve had a brew this good, once again Dupont have hit the proverbial nail on the head with this fantastic Gruit. In fact if I had a bottle of this and Duvel (my favourite beer) sitting on a table in front of me I would reach for Cervesia, perhaps I’ve had my fill of Duvel - which is a brilliant beer no less, who knows maybe these spiced brews hit the spot more in my old age? [35 atm btw]. Regardless this is one fascinating beer from Dupont deserving of a place in my beer pantheon, no two ways about it. Better than their Saison? For me: Shit yeah! 9/10.

Food match: Beef bourguignon or steak frites, or if you’re less meat-inclined: Cheese platter with some Bleu de Bresse.
